How to make sure Playstation TV (Vita TV) doesn't update?

So I found out that with Playstation TV's, you can hack them to play all Vita games. So I just purchased one with Wipeout 2048, and it will basically be my permanent Wipeout 2048 machine.

However, the update in late Sept (3.55) removed this exploit. I want to make absolutely sure I don't get this update. Does the Vita only update when you connect to the PSN Store, or are there other times it may auto-update? Am I safe to connect it to the internet so I can run the exploit?

So I went ahead and dove in.

There's an option in the menu to disable internet connectivity completely, and there are options to avoid automatically downloading system updates. So now that I'm not connected to the internet, I don't have to worry, but if I ever want to get online with Wipeout then I'm going to need to figure out something.

You can try going to the format section in the Settings menu, there's a few options there that might do it. As long as you're below 3.52 you can do most every mod to it.

I don't think I've ever owned a device that updates automatically. They generally want you aware of the update process, so you don't disconnect power and brick it.

New PS TV's are so cheap now, I wouldn't bother with a used one. Mine cost $35 from Amazon, and I saw them for $40 at Best Buy. I think my the firmware version is 3.35. I highly doubt you'd get 3.55 on any new model since that was only introduced a couple months ago.

Wipeout 2048 cost me $20. So I figured $55 for a permanent Wipeout 2048 machine wasn't too bad. I'm still hoping I can find a way to download the HD track DLC and play online though.

There's currently no way to play online without the most recent firmware. There is spoofing for certain apps but you can't trick PSN servers into thinking you're on the latest firmware.
You may be able to download the DLC on a PS3 and transfer it over though.

I read something about an update blocker program that would prevent the update from overwriting the hacked whitelist, but I can't find out if it still works. I need to be 100% sure because playing Wipeout 2048 on a big screen is my priority. Online and HD tracks are secondary.

Either way, I can now confirm that using the Vita Update Blocker (v1.2 is the latest) you can transfer content from a PS3 using the Content Manager application on the Vita. This is how I moved a PSP demo over to install the PSP exploit.

Thanks for testing that out Bob, i'll give it a try later (even though 99 times out of 100 if I want to play HD and Fury tracks I'll be pulling out my PS3). It'll be good to go ahead and get these on the PSTV in case I can figure out how to get online for multiplayer.

And yeah, that was me on Reddit. The Wipeout patch went pretty smooth, and it actually gave me better performance! The dynamic resolution doesn't drop as often. The only downside was I had to redo the whitelist hack, which only took a couple minutes since the emails were still in my Inbox.

I also wasn't totally sure what I was doing. Like I bought Abyss on the PSN Store but surely they'd want me to have an updated PSTV before transferring stuff over to a non latest firmware? I also didn't want to go too far in to setup in case Amazon didn't accept the return.

I think you can transfer over games from your PS3 to your PSTV if you are running VitaUpdateBlocker on your PC. I just did this with the Wipeout 2048 DLC.

Yeah, you can update via USB, but I've had trouble finding the downloads. Softpedia seems to have most of them, but I'm not sure if they're official. I'm not sure which one would be the best to update to. I'm on 3.35 and seems to be working fine for what I need.

I purchased a digital only game from the Japanese PSN Vita store a few weeks ago using the Vita TV. The game came out after 3.55, so I updated just to access the store and it turns out it is not compatible with the Vita TV. So I also picked up a new Vita TV for $20 from BestBuy (did not open it yet though). Really should have checked first to see if there was a way to access the store without updating... But now that it is too late, is there anyway to try the whitelist hack since the game is digital only? From what I have read, you can not swap memory cards with a Vita TV on a lower firmware and I would not be able to access the PSN store since I would not be on the newest firmware. Any ideas?

Also have another game that I pre-ordered from Japan which is due to be released in a few weeks. This one has a physical game card, so I am waiting test to see if that works with the Vita TV before I open the new Vita TV and check its firmware.

If it's on 3.20 and you have any interest in softmodding it, leave it there. It's the latest firmware that can access the native Vita PS1 emulator (which of course has very good compatibility).

You realize that Golden Abyss relies on touch controls the PSTV does not have for some things? Not sure about the details, but definitely read up on it if you haven't already.

The Dualshock 4 works well for simulating the touch controls.

Yeah. I was mainly getting it to glitch hunt and find skips for the areas you can't complete on PSTV so we have a fully functioning game. My friend told me the only problem is the part where you need to put the Vita up to a light doesn't work.

At this point I'm not sure whether this is entirely Wipeout 2048's fault or whether this is related to the 4GB memory card which I reformatted in the PS TV before loading it. Then again this wouldn't be the first Sony title which corrupts memory cards on certain SKUs. The crash tends to happen after the race ends - presumably when it saves the race result/campaign progress. So far it hasn't fatally corrupted the save or lost any progress - so for the time being it is simply a nuisance.

I've had WipEout 2048 crash just before finishing a race on my Vita 1000 model too (download version, 32 GB memory card I believe), so nothing new there...
