*DONE w/pics* arcade stick (xbox360) that doesn't "click"

Post by 2dvertical »

New to these. I had got a hori teken stick free from a buddy. I think the stick is octo., hate the clicking noise Anyway, quality of parts aside (sanwa etc). Do they make an arcade setup with a stick that feels like an AMERICAN arcade cabinet? No clicks, just fluid 360 movement. Basically I want a stick that feels and moves like the standard xbox controller stick, if such a thing exists. Any suggestions? Looking to just buy and not mod what I currently have.

Look for Sanwa FLASH-1 or clones of these type, which uses optical lasers instead of microswitches.

The sanwa JLF and other sticks can have different gates installed. Octo, Square, Circle. Each one costs only a few bucks - http://www.focusattack.com/jlf-gt-o-cir ... -joystick/

So can I mod this tekken 6 stick to achieve what I am wanting. Its a hard scenario to research tutorials on, most people dont like the wireless delay or think the unit is a p.o.s. etc. Or the mod guides are from 8 years ago. I have found only a few tutorials but they seemed to do a lot of dremeling/sanding to the housing of the unit just to get the stick to the proper height? This is frustrating to say the least. So ALL other b.s. about the quality of the tekken stick aside, is there any chance i can get a plate that makes the noise go away and more fluid? Do I need a new stick? Any help would GREATLY be appreciated!

Or add an octogonal restrictor plate to the stick in it? Modification required?

Tekken 6 sticks are a nightmare to mod, even for accomplished modders. Buy yourself a Madkatz entry model instead.

the clicking you're talking about is the lever of the stick itself hitting the microswitch, this is how it knows when you're pressing right or down or w/e. it doesn't work like an analogue stick, it's more like a d-pad in terms of functionality. I hadn't heard of it before beatsgo mentioned it, but it seems like the sanwa flash-1 is what you're looking for. although I don't know if these feel like an analogue stick either.

If you happen to have a Sanwa JLF stick, you can replace the microswitches with this or that. Definitely cheaper and easier to obtain than looking for the original one since they're not being produced anymore.

Ok, so if I just say screw it and buy a new unit. IS THERE A READY TO GO UNIT I can buy that has these silent (fluid 360 motion) sticks? Or is there no such thing?

More likely no.
You could consider installing a Happ Controls Perfect 360 Optical Joystick however I'm not sure if they're compatiable with japanese sticks like Hori Real Arcade Pro sticks or MadCatz Arcade Sticks without having to make a custom mount (or even available to purchase since it seems to be discontinued). Maybe the XBOX Mortal Kombat FightStick allows you to fit the Perfect 360, though I haven't seen or tried it. Better just to get Sanwa JLF with Flash-1 PCB clone and install yourself with an arcade stick.

So I found a Street Fighter IV stick really cheap, its not the Tournament edition so buttons are whatever "arcade style". From what I can tell from research this box is easy to mod due to the quick connects so no soldering buttons. I am getting the
JLF-TP-RG-8AYT-SK SILENT for the stick. Apparently the Tournament edition came with a JLF-1 installed, so I'm hoping this box has the same housing attachment points for this new stick. This new stick claims it has the same mounting points / five pin connector as the original JLF-1. Any suggestions would be helpful as I plan to change the buttons as well.

I also want to change the artwork. I do graphic design to creating it is no prob. But, any advise on where and what kind of paper for artwork, type of clear sheet to go over, adhesive and order of application. Is there a special clear sheet that has adhesive on it already to adhere the artwork sheet to? then spray adhesive on back of artwork to stick to box? Any help with this would be appreciated.

Please post your final result. I would love to see some custom fight sticks

I can recommend you getting it printed at http://www.gameongrafix.com/ , you should be able to fit two copies onto the cheapest option that's big enough for one in case you can't decide between two. Get the toughest quality and you're pretty much set for life.

I was watching a video tutorial about disassembly of the housing to change the artwork. The guy removed the entire button. Can't you just squeeze the tabs on the button flanges and pop those out and leave the button? Or is the flange part of the button (connected to it)?

Theoretically you can, but it's easier to take it out the whole button since the location of the tabs are not viewable when opening a back panel of an arcade stick. They're on the sides where the threading of the button is at.

The stick I ordered comes with a five pin wire harness. The stick I have is SE edition so has madcatz stick. Can I use the wire harness already in the housing or do I have to use the one supplied with the stick?

The same stick in the Tournement edition has a sanwa stick, if that matters?

Or is this a situation where I need and adapter?

Should work if plugged in the right direction.

Thanks to all for the help with this. Kept the artwork simple as I haven't used photoshop in ages, I do more mechanical design work. If I did it again I would go the route Emphatic suggested and sent the artwork off to a company for a more durable top layer, I went the Lami-Label route. Basically the durability of a typical sticker. The stick in gameplay is so much better and smoother and borderlines complete silence. Buttons are nothing more than the quality of what was in it stock, the new Sanwa "silent" buttons I got are basically just a foam washer inserted where the buttons bottom out. The main goal was to get a silent stick that didn't compromise game play/style and that was achieved..

Incredible. That looks amazing. Could you provide a link to the stick you replaced it with?

OK, so I got this stick silent. Then it was performance testing. I am still fairly new to this, most of my research has been through post and webpages Emphatic has posted (thank you, very helpful). If you click on the link above that shows the stick I got from focus attack you can see that the gate, plate, etc is all one component. As far as I could tell there is no way to change out to a circular or octagonal insert. The gate/plate on there is thicker, It doesn't seem like I can simply get a JLF plate and swap. I ended up using some epoxy and put a nylon washer with an inner diameter that is the same as the measurement between the square gate that is on there. It gave me a circular motion, and put a spring in somewhere between 1-2lbs (maybe 1.75). I also applied a thin film of grease (as Emphatic suggests) on rubbing plastic parts.

This will do for now, or maybe it has to? There is no mention in the description for this stick to use other gates etc like the other sticks they show on Focus Attack. I am leaning towards that Optical sensor (link posted in this thread). I know I am 6 or so years behind the stick craze but any suggestions?
