Memorization is possible in any game that has even a single static element. Memorization is only necessary for survival when hazards are not telegraphed (which isn't all that common, many shmups do it right). Realistically, only extremely high level player will be able to avoid any memorization when clearing games that are above average difficulty for the genre (that legendary SDOJ blind clear, heh).

As for Astebreed, I made it to the final boss on one credit blind whilst barely paying attention (the dialogue is so distracting lol) and only game overed at Queen System because I barely knew what buttons did what. Once I figured out the system a bit, I wiped the floor with her on normal.

Hard is better about this though. It can actually kill you if you don't play well, but challenge is still more about scoring then surviving, as I understand it (note this is hearsay, I haven't put much time into hard, Xaerock is pretty good at the game though so you could ask him).

Definitely. St2 Boss tricked me into thinking the game is better then it is lol.

Defeating that boss without bombs looks impossible for me, yeah I'd recommend play it on Special version.

I remember hearing about the Queen System being much harder than APITEX...

What would you guys say are the best shmups available on Vita? Grabbing the new Darius when it drops of course but I would love any other games! Sadly I have a lot of trouble navigating the PSN market on my horrible internet :(

What are some good replays of Hitogata Happa? I've seen videos on YouTube but I don't know if they're any good, or what a good score even is in this game.

I heard that G-Darius port has problems with music on modern OS.

What a coincidence! (i mean situation with mame).

In my experience MAME plays it near arcade perfect, but the music is still not properly emulated. The latest version of the emulated sound processor does produce audible music, but it sounds extremely thin and way off compared to other versions. Looking at the comments in the source it looks like the devs still couldn't reverse engineer the entire sample format either. Git history for the corresponding source file is non-existent, I'd say nobody has been working on it maybe since MAME went open source? Too bad...
Yeah you're right, I originally thought there was just poor compression or something on the arcade version (like in DonPachi), but it's more like many of the instruments don't play and the rest sound tinny, lacking any semblance of bass. I sure hope it's fixed someday, though who knows if or when that may happen...

Anyone have this happen??? So I'm playing Gradius Gaiden (PS2 SCPH-90000 the one that fixed up the slowdown on Stage 7), and I beat the third miniboss during the boss rush (the three small ships). And then... nothing. The music doesn't fade out like it's supposed to and I keep flying in space. I was pretty worried there was a problem with my disc, so I played through it multiple times in stage select and it worked without a problem everytime... CD looks fine too...

Never had that happen, but I've never played Gaiden on anything but PS1s... if it's not a freak bug, my first guess would be something backward compatibility-related. Doubt it's the disc if stage select is working for you, I'd expect it to fail there too if the data was corrupt.

Did you mean the music doesn't play when in-game? It's because the game was bundled with redbook audio, late 90's PC games do that as well(?) like Megaman X4-X5.

I'm glad the Taito Legends 2 port on PS2 runs the game without any issues and slowdown, it also runs well in latest PCSX2 release with some certain settings.

Battle Crust got some heavy Image Fight/R-Type -influences there. I approve of this. I wonder if Playism will bring it over like they did with the circle's other shmups.

Has anyone wondered where the character designs for Lou and Siva from Capcom's "Three Wonders" (1991) come from?

Answer: The character "Snufkin" from the 1991 anime of the Finnish comic book "Moomin."

Sora was just released on Steam and I'm thinking of picking it up, but should I play Suguri first? Also, does Acceleration of Suguri have online multiplayer, and if so, do people actually play it?

Dodonpachi Daioujou Death Label (boss rush mode in the PS2 port) took seven years for someone to beat it. Inbachi in SDOJ has yet to be beaten, unless this really isn't a TAS.

Could you micro-memo Inbachi's final in the same way as was done to clear death label, or is it too random?

Thanks. In the comments it says that SWY has since cleared Death Label too. Is this true?

Dunno about Inbachi, but according to MON (here's another interview if you're interested) the movement of the double Hibachis at the end of Death Label is random, so even though the pattern is fixed you still can't make a foolproof route.

I don't know if it's SWY, but here are two other clears of Death Label, one with Type A and one with Type B:

As far as MON and SWY are "officially" cleared it, the others are using TAS.

Also in YouTube has SWY DL clear video, the title was written in Korean language so I don't remember it really.

Sounds like Thunder Blaster (JP) / Lethal Thunder (World). The mash-o-meter's in both versions, but handled very differently.

DLC. Questions...
Was the 1.5 matsuri mode for mushihimesama HD included on the DLC disc in the CAVE shooting collection box set?.
I installed the complete DLC disc before selling my CC and NTSC-j console but have since bought a new NTSC-j console. I am hoping that if I boot a copy of DDP DFK that I will have access to the dlc?. The dlc certainly never appeared when booting the PAL version.
I have looked in my HDD and I can only see mushi files in the Kb so I'm thinking it was never included?
Thanks...

Does anyone have a link to a video of a Parodius Da! (arcade) 2-all? I'm curious if a video of anyone 2-alling that game exists.

Hay guys, couple questions, I'm coming back to shmups after not playing for a couple years and I'm a little lost.

1) What is the mame to use now? I've seen groovymame but I can't make it work, and I think I really followed the step by step instructions. Mame plus XT is pretty good despite being a little buggy, but I don't think it has the lagless type thing.
Playing with 3-4 frames of lag seems like playing underwater, I think I didn't mind so much because I used to play on CRTs. On my random ass LCD it's literally inertia.

2) Why do recent cave games look like ass in mame? Even DOJ and ketsui, altho not as bad as DFK and all. It looks...weird, as if they were lower rez than donpachi for some reason. Is it because of LCD? I've seen most of these games running on a cab and they look good.

I had more questions but I forgot :D. I'll post them later.

Edit: I remembered one:

3) Why the hell does every recent mame version not recognise some games? Pretty sure I have the correct romsets (168 or 169) and the games do not appear in the list of avaliable games. Even forcing the launch doesn't work. I don't get missing stuff messages, but a lot of games (xevious, gigawing, mars matrix, gunnail among others) just do'nt work at all.
I tried getting the romsets from a different source and same deal.
