If you've got time these days to do a few voice bits I can certainly add them in once I get my compile environment going again (had a hard drive failure, code's on a private GIT repo now but I gotta reinstall GMS). Give me a buzz if you have any ideas as to how to go about it. :)
Cool. Should we do it announcer style, or what? Maybe Kaiser can write down a few lines that I can record and magically enhance?

Zenohell Random Insult Label = excellent idea.
but maybe make it something that could be easily turned on/off in options menu?
maybe throw in a "your mama is so fat-joke" as well.

Here's a speech the TLB could give.

Code: Select all

Pilot. You have crushed my forces, torn through my base, and threatened centuries of desire.

Do you see it, Pilot? This burning, desolate universe. This vast cosmos. This imminent destruction of your race.

Pilot.

...

I HAVE ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HAD IT WITH YOUR SHIT. I'm going to rip your whole body off and shove it down your dick. I'll rip your god damn pancreas out through your tearduct. I'll fuck you. I'll fuck your corpse. I'll fuck everyone. I'll fuck everyone you love.

tl;dr fuck you, pilot
Or maybe that's stupid. I dunno.

The joke is that you can't store files bigger than 2GB on a FAT32 partition.

We'll see what he has to say about it within the next few days. We'd prefer not to go overboard with it, possibly one-liners if that - of course it'd be togglable via the Sound Options menu if I were to implement it.

I was confused too, but its because the limit is 4GB. I believe you are thinking of FAT12 or w/e, but I only ever knew what I was using when it was FAT32.

On another note I've thought Zenohell looks pretty cool, but I haven't got around to picking it up. If it gets a sale on steam I'll probably pick it up. Otherwise it'll be after I want something different from Mushihimesama.

The truth is:

2,147,483,647 bytes (2 GB - 1) (without LFS)
4,294,967,295 bytes (4 GB - 1) (with LFS)

Of course LFS was a nightmare... now back to hell.

I suppose this could be done but we'll see how it goes as we have other things in mind first, like trying to implement steam achievements (and implement them in a way that won't require the steam to run in background, make it non intrusive). Trading cards are currently out of question due the fact that Valve demands we make entire sets of different things including HD resolution profile backgrounds as well.

You can still get it for next 13 hours on https://groupees.com/casual5 for $1 with some other game, both steam key and a DRM free copy are included.

I am enjoying this game although I wish the "focus" button would slow the ship a tad more as dodging some of the bullet patterns with the current focus speed is troublesome for me.

For those who missed out on the groupees promo, can again pick up the game for cheap on steam, as it's 75% off due the autumn sale, until December 1.

I suppose I can provide a little insight on what's been going on, frankly i'm a busy man and i'm trying to get my degree in March at all costs and there's still plenty of roadblocks to jump over.

So I haven't had any time personally to work on things I had in mind like achievements, but i'm afraid that has to wait until i'm done with my educational problems in real life until I can sit down and do it proper. By any means, the plans are not cancelled but delayed.

Kaiser knows the details for the former a bit more so I'll let him answer that, but I can confirm that the Steam version runs without the client - for now we don't actually do separate builds, they're the same app.

Discounts don't make me lose money, taxes are a natural thing so i'm not including those, steam refunds HOWEVER bring losses, I had 11 people refund the game so far thus lose ~80$ (this was at the launch week from what I can tell). I'm not blaming or saying negative about that, just saying how it works.

And yeah the game is still DRM-free even if you get it on steam, eventually we'll get around the achievements on Steam but we'll take all the steps to make sure the game remains DRM free on Steam so that's not changing.

I bought this, and I think there are issues with it from a design standpoint.

1. For me personally, the control mapping for the "focus" button did not work with my arcade stick. Every other shmup ever works with it, and the other buttons in this game did as well, but for some reason the "focus" button was utterly non-operational so I've been having to play the game purely unfocused.
2. Enemies that start firing while still half off the screen. The large blue ships in the later stages do this, often while you are near the top of the screen collecting power ups. So you go to grab a bomb and blue bullets moving at the speed of light pointblank you. It feels cheap. There are other examples of this in other stages.
3. No indication of bullet fire on bosses. By that I mean bosses unleash crazy fast bullets directly at your face with no forewarning, i.e. no turrets opening up on the bosses sprite to signify a change in attack. Accompanied by the bullet speed this feels jarring.
4. Without V-sync, filter and AA turned on, the framerate is all over the place, and the game seems to drop frames. This cleared up after I turned on vsync etc. so it could have just been my computer trying to run it at 400fps and going a bit mental.
5. General samey-ness of boss patterns. I noticed by the end of the game that you guys love having patterns where you dodge through vertical lines of bullets while others fly directly at you, causing you to need to move in a pretty set pattern back and forth across the screen. By the end of the game this actually gets a little dull. This coupled with the frankly mental bullet speed that sometimes occurs makes the game somewhat tiresome and exhausting to play for me personally, rather than exhilarating and gripping as other fast bullet shmups can be. The unfortunate thing about this is that when you guys allow the bullets to slow down a little, the patterns are really good. It felt to me like in some places the bullet speed was a crutch of design. I could very well be wrong.

Let me make myself clear, I didn't just do 1 run through and come on here to rant about how the game was "too hard" for me. I've tried playing this all evening with all 3 basic ships and these are the points I've come up with after this.

I'd also like to point out that I think the music absolutely rocks and a lot of the sprite work is really nice as well. The bosses you fight during the boss rush are really good as well. Furthermore, you were smart enough not to marry very fast bullets to a hitbox that is too big, it feels fair, and allows for some tense dodging of attacks.

Anyway this is just what I think, it's not my intention to shit on your game or anything like that but I'd rather just give an honest opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. Most it we won't be able to really fix now the game's well and truly out (and I think the radical speed without vsync is a graphics driver issue, may help to enforce a game-specific config in CCC/nCP) but we'll take the suggestions into account with the next project.

The "Focus" button slows your movement, and nothing else on the three standard ships. Are you saying it literally didn't even do that? Curious to know what stick you're using too.

On #2, we had a select few individuals complain about this during testing but when I asked for specifics they all went quiet and vague, which frankly doesn't help us find these sort of things at all. Personally your comment's probably the most detailed I've seen. :S
It's not something we can really fix now it's well into release I'm afraid, but if you/emphatic/anyone else that's noticed are willing to point out an obvious case of which enemies do it when (a step value from the debug display when it happens or a screenshot would be helpful) we can at least make sure it doesn't happen in future projects by looking closely at the code that's there.

On #3, we did look into this too via bullet flashes before launch of said bullets but I think we misinterpreted what was suggested and it ended up actually making things worse according to the majority of testers, so that got panned. But literally simple flashes to show where a bullet's being fired from (as was in our previous project Zenodyne if anyone cares to compare) and details like opening turrets/glowing pods should be doable for the next project.

You rock. As I said I certainly wasn't trying to be rude but honest feedback is always better.

Yeah the focus button doesn't even slow my ship down at all, at least not that I can notice. I am using a HORI Street Fighter 4 Fightstick Pro that I got in like 2010. It works properly in other games like I said. I also tried mapping the focus button to other buttons on the stick etc. Could it be something like the game having default mappings for arcade sticks that is interfering with my remapping? i.e. the game has a default of button 2 (which is the top left button I would use for "focus") for fire or something, and as such it thinks I'm trying to use the same button for firing and focusing and is therefore having issues?

Just a thought.

Honest feedback if detailed is best feedback. I realise now I may have sounded a bit irritated writing that post but only because our inner Nostradamus didn't help us much.

The default layout for controls assume a pad, although the fight stick I used did originally work with the code and bought around the same time so perhaps I should try it again. If all else fails I may have to bug you with a PM of a app I sent to folks with joystick issues to see what the stick is actually doing so we can nail this for the next big update we got planned.

If you're dying with a full bomb stock, with all due respect you're not making effective use of them. For one thing they add to the multiplier of the amount of medals spawned on boss death (indicated by a display that defaults on x1.00).

I'm not 100% sure about your last point, but I may have seen it before at the end of the stage 3 boss. Bombs when used give invul for a few seconds however as indicated with your flashing ship. Bombs also serve to raise boss multipliers after destruction by .25 per bomb. I would be surprised if you missed on stage 1 and 2 then nmnb'd the rest of the game, especially with the extra stage included.

I don't think anyone's made an ST or hiscore thread for the game yet. I was really hoping someone else would do it since I'd rather not add to my current "never updated ST threads count".

The medals bug is interesting, thought that got fixed during testing. We'll place a mandatory minimum y value for them and also kill them off when the stage clear screen happens when we do the next big patch, should knock that out once and for all.

Score extends are at 25, 50, 100, 150 and 250 million points. There's also hidden extends scattered throughout the game depending on how you handle matters......none of which will help you come the *true* final stage if your dodging/bombing skills are not up to scratch as Emuser can testify.

Post by Kaiser »

After fans steadily asked for those since the game launched, here they finally are! Steam Achievements! A whole 23 of them, will you be crazy enough to get them all?

On top of achievements, we've also fixed a couple of nasty bugs that were rare but STILL WERE BUGS, here's a short condensed list:

- Fixed the mysterious ship dissapearing bug
- TATE was fixed because it didn't work right under certain conditions
- Secret Ship #2's Firing Arc was fixed
- Fixed boss medals going offscreen vertically then suddenly coming on stage clear.
And many other little fixes that we won't bother you with ;)

Keep in mind that the game still will be supported and updated, we are looking into all other remaining issues that we weren't able to fix properly yet. Have fun, most of them are hidden so you won't see em till you get em, good luck!!

The bugfixes are coming to the DRM free releases too, they should be updated soon. EDIT: Updated

I am looking into these issues ASAP (I already figured out the stage unlock problem, I blame someone else who reported a supposed bug related to that, and so fixing it probably caused this), however the high score corruption is bizarre, it's like the encryption broke in one of the recent GM Studio updates, this needs serious investigation.

UPDATE: We pushed the stage unlock fix to Steam, me and BP are in process of trying to figure out the high score bug.

Okay, I've uploaded the build that fixes the issue with file saving. I won't elaborate on the details but suffice to say it was a pain in the ass. Thanks Yoyo. :x

To ensure things work smoothly, if you have a score.znh and/or unlock.zd2 file from before December 15 delete it. This is easily done by opening up the Zenohell properties page on Steam, clicking on Browse Local Files and then deleting the aforementioned files.

In addition, fixes for the menu selection "sticking" to Stage Select if you pick it and then exit back is also fixed.
