CGA to VGA Arcade Converters

Post by mehguy »

I'm in the market for parts for my supergun build and I keep seeing these CGA to VGA converters on eBay and Aliexpress. They sell them for as low as 20 dollars. Are they any good?

This is what im talking about: http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?cat ... cga+to+vga

I use mine with a sync strike and PS2, MegaDrive 2 and Wii. I can say I'm quite happy with it although it has its little quirks when you switch between 50hz and 60hz without turning it off first etc. If you google the name or model number of it there's a lot of info on various forums and videos. A lot of it is by people using it with arcade boards. There's also been some say about fake ones that go for cheap online.. I'm not sure about the ones on Ali-Express but I got mine from ebay uk and it was 20£.

Well would you recommend one of these or should I spend some extra cash and get a Jrok or something?

I use one of these in conjuction with a blue elf adapter to allow me to play games on my arcade cabinet, but also capture them for recording and/or streaming. Works really well, and even works with my Seibu boards and likely others with odd refresh rates. Only quirk is that you do sometimes have to mess with geometry and positioning settings in order to get video to display (I thought it just flat out wouldn't work with my Raiden DX board until I discovered the aforementioned geometry setting change, the video just showed up basically frozen before) but the actual quality out of the unit is pretty good.

For my use ( home consoles ) I would definitely recommend it. If you're expecting immaculate video quality then spend more but otherwise go for it.
