Let's talk Techno (NOT Trance/House/Hard/Goa/Ambient etc.)

Post by pestro87 »

Stuff like this:

Eat Static - Hybrid
Eat Static - Contact
Bryan Zentz - D-Clash (Original Mix)
G.I.T.S Megatech Body - Spook & Spell (Fast Version)
Jeff Mills - The Bells

What are some of you guys' favorite artists/albums/tracks?

Also, please refrain from posting sub-genre snobbery like "This is actually ambient crossover west-Irish acid rave dnb, NOT ambient acid rave like you stated". Let's try and keep the discussion on the music itself and not delve too much into how it should be categorized.

Cheers

Sebastien Leger - Majuro
Whim-ee - You Like It D
Rick Wade - Deep Subliminal

It's hard not to use subgenre designation terms though, let's say I like it housey-acidey-Detroitey...old school.

And just for fun because for a short period of time I was into gabber (and barely any older than these kids lol) http://youtu.be/lkqtQ61k58E

Haha :D Yeah they (or "he" I suppose since it's just Merv now) dabble into many genres but they have a few tracks that I would personally categorize as techno such as the ones listed in the OP. Awesome tracks btw!!! I will give them a proper listen tonight accompanied by a glass of whiskey 8)

Agreed, feel free to use those terms so that people know approximately what you're talking about. What I meant was that it's easy to get lost in discussions about how an artist should be categorized so I was hoping to keep the focus of the conversation on the actual music itself.

While I love Eat Static, they are definitely not Techno by today's standards, and pretty questionably back in their hay day. Some excellent stuff out of those wacky guys.

Best techno I've heard in a while, and I've been clubbing for over 20 years:

Spot me in the video and get a free kiss blown to you through the internet.

Maceo Plex's Essential Mix from last week is apparently the cat's meow. I've not gotten around to it yet.
Jeff Mills - The Bells
My first weekend living here in Chicago, I went to see Interstellar at the IMAX, and low and behold, the man himself was there lined up to buy popcorn. ;)

I doubt it's "techno", but speaking of genres, what would any of you would call this?

Good thread!

My top picks, chronologically:

Cybotron - Clear One of the great classics.
R-Tyme - R-Theme My favorite Derrick May track.
Inner City - Good Life All the 90s dance stuff was basically a poor copy of this.
UR - Jupiter Jazz Garegga stage 2!
Carl Craig - Future Love Theme This whole album is mindblowing.
Ben Klock - Subzero Quintessential Berlin sound.

There is too much Techno I could give from the Ambient Techno and Dub Techno genres that I think I'd bore you all. I will say that anything Coppice Halifax does is amazing. One of the best Techno producers out there and he's getting more and more experimental as time goes on.
He remixed a track of mine for a single to promo a Dub Techno album I had come out on the label. He then mentioned after the full album was out that the remix he gave was a remix of the first remix he made. Both are on this release
https://coppicehalifax.bandcamp.com/alb ... l-fortress
and some other CH stuff that is worth hearing.

Cool! It's "Positive Education" by Slam. SOMA is the record label run by Slam and was responsible for releasing Daft Punk's "Da Funk" before they were picked up by that major label.

Awesome stuff in this thread. A lot of it is kind of blurred between trance and ambient though. I'm a bit of a dirty drum & bass enthusiast personally, although recently I've been listening to all sorts of odd shit from The Kooks to the Chappie soundtrack (Not the Die Antwoord stuff, the the Hans Zimmer absolute boner inducing reverb stuff) I also gave some time to Chase & Status's No More Idols. I quite liked it's eclectic mix of styles.

Martin Damm is the king of hardcore techno. It's always been a little perplexing to me how he seems to be so relatively unknown when he's one of the most insanely prolific producers in the industry.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

@emphatic Tim Taylor & Dan Zamani - The Horn Track is such a fantastic track! Can't stop listening to it! The Soma track is also really sweet!

@GP Wow, you've been to the Labyrinth Festival? That's super awesome! Some great stuff in that video btw. Haha nice, really cool to hear that you saw him in Chicago! What a legend. His live sets never ceases to amaze me.

@Xyga I've heard a few Ken Ishii tracks but nothing that really grabbed me. That track is amazing though! And really cool video as well!

3 times. ;) I was a late bloomer to that. It was getting good when I went back to Japan, but had just had a kid, then marriage crumbled, then economy crumbled, and I finally bounced back and decided to enjoy life. My first year was the year with the infamous typhoon... the one that went all the way up into the mountains. :?

I've seen Jeff Mills around, not DJing, a few times. I actually rode from Tokyo to Kyoto with him (as a translator/handler) in 1999. This was the 3-vinyl turntables and a drum machine days. He is amazing, no two ways about it.

Yagya - Snowflake 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mbk8M86rwg
Ambient Techno classic from a man who moved onto Dub Techno after his debut. Entire album is pure classic.
Gas - Gas 5 (All tracks are untitled on all albums) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-q9ReQjIA4
Amazing debut from Wolfgang Voigt as Gas. The rest is orchestral sampled Ambient Techno, but that debut is pure synth Ambient Techno of the highest order.

Fun Fact:
Feedbacker's avatar comes from the album cover of the Ghost in the Shell Playstation Game soundtrack (CD, verison)

I owns the vinyl, which ain't cheap.

The title track of which is a pretty bangin' techno track from Takkyu Ishino. The opening animation of which is more inline w/ the original manga than any of the other ones... which I quite prefer. Oh, the 90's...
