streaming with a Mac Book Pro

Post by mikehaggar »

I'm about to buy a new laptop, and I'm leaning heavily into the mac camp for the first time in my life. One thing I'd like to do is stream (this is not my actual reason for getting a mac of course as a PC would be better for such a thing). I would probably stream a lot of 240p as I play a lot of old games. The xcapture-1 seems like a good card but it's PC only. So I have a few questions.

1) Does the XCAPTURE-1 work fine on a mac book pro running windows via Boot Camp?

2) Are there other good streaming solutions for macs?

Thanks guys....

You might want to try something cheaper to use until you decide if you're serious about it: you can get a capture device with an S-Video input for way cheaper, and nobody will be able to tell the difference between RGB and S-Video watching on a low-bitrate stream on Twitch. For example, the GV-USB2 sells for around $45, and supports composite and s-video. No idea about if it supports OS X, though.

I use an usb easycap and while the quality isn't stellar, at least it's cheap.

There's OBS on Mac which works good and is free.

That's my streaming setup (although I rarely stream)

This seems interesting to me.

What do I need to check if I want to make sure that this will be compatible with my PC?

Also what are all of the steps needed for the capturing ? (I'm a n00b when it comes to this) : digging a little, I saw that you also need to install the drivers that come with the GV-USB2 (that or some program called Amarec) for setup, and then some streaming/recording program like OBS. Is this it?
Do I need OBS or the likes if I only record (so no live broadcast)?

Thanks in advance for answering

I'm not experienced with streaming first-hand. I just know that some of the streamers that I follow have mentioned that they use that capture card, due to it being affordable, and s-video quality being good enough (honestly, when watching a stream on twitch, I can spot a composite capture, but I can't tell the difference between an s-video and RGB capture, since the video compression degrades chroma quality at least as much as s-video would have in the first place by subsampling).

I would use it for uploading gameplay on Youtube. Checked some footage on YT and it looks decent.
Will check on google for info on the GV-USB2. Thanks!

I use the elgato Game Capture HD on Mac without a problem, but I feed it through an XRGB-mini first to get it to HDMI. It doesn't accept RGB or 240p component afaik.
