Moving from Sweden to Japan!

Post by bytestorm »

Hey all!
Just as I thought I got it all under control, my world goes upside down :S.. many reasons for this desicion but that's the way it goes :). Family is all good so thats no problem. Just a bit heavy to end up selling most of my stuff.. been collecting for many years now.. and to be honest, in the latter years it's only been collecting and no playing so.. this might be a chance to start fresh! Who knows..

Anyone done the same? Left your home country to live in japan (permanent, I dont mean a year's study or vacation ofc)

How was your experience? What was tough / easier than expected?

I am swedish but I speak English and basic japanese, been working as a electronics engineer for 5+ years and computer repairs for 10+..but aint got any degree to show .. I got hired on my self taught skills luckily . But am a bit nervous that a degree will be nessesary in Japan..

Just throwing my thoughts out there to see if anyone been in this situation?

Thanks for reading :D

Well for a start your dating life might pick up some what :P

See how it goes and use the experience to get some skills developed as best you can.

Best of luck with it and give yourself time and space to adapt.

Didn't GP return to his country of origins only so he could stand watching the TV along with all the nation?

Yep - been here since 2005. Have a wife, house, 2 cars, and 3 kids now. Still haven't bought much furniture for the house because I still feel like I'll be "returning any day now"... I suppose I should get over that. :?

Where are you moving to?

Leaving Sweden is a good choice, considering that the country is literally falling apart.

Alright, nice! 10yrs.. may I ask what you do for a living? Own company? Japanese company? What kind of difficulties did you experience while getting used to the new country? I apologize if these are to private questions but would be happy to hear your story if you would share it :).

We will move to saitama (omiya) first and then it all depends on where I can find a job. I havent decided yet if I would to start my own company perhaps. Have a couple of friends also in Tokyo that might need help with some gameprogramming in the soon future, their first game is soon to be released (http://www.visiontrick.com/blog/pavilion/) but they also have really interesting things coming ;).

@Bonus! Yeah.. man, I dont know whats happening to Sweden but I really dont like the way that the country has become in the later years.. :/ feels like everything is slowly going downhill somehow..

I'm going to move to Japan as soon as possible. Japan, Singapore or South Korea.
I'm so, so sick of western people, traditions and culture. Too bad that this future plan is far, because it's pretty impossible for a poor student to make it a reality.

So is Finland, and the rest of the Europe too. It's sickening and I want to get out of here

Compared to Sweden, Finland is in excellent shape. I don't want to derail this thread, but most of the Western foreigners I know in Sweden have started to seriously think about leaving this country.

So if even the Northern-Europe countries which are doing better than pretty much the rest of the world, are fed up too with life awful lives here...where the hell is it still good to live ? I really wonder. ^^

Dunno what's happening to Sweden aside from the recent refugee mess all the lights seem to still be on the green, don't tell me your country is facing its first ordeal and doubts in a about a century and you're feeling like everything is over because of it ?

Don't believe the hype about Sweden. We've been having parallel societies for decades. Quite recently, the police openly admitted that there are 55 areas they no longer enter, and which are effectively under Sharia law. We have been witnessing dramatic white flight, which resulted in one of the highest racial segregations in Europe. Considering that Sweden intends to take in another 400.000 immigrants, of which many will be unable to contribute to society, it doesn't take much to realize that we're rapidly moving towards a situation not unlike South Africa, where whites can no longer feel safe, to put it mildly. Further, our politicians are out of touch with reality, and blindly push their multicultural agenda, which even goes so far as to evict (!) Swedes in order to house illegals. (If you want to question any of this, then please do some research first.)

I have no intentions of making any deeper conversation about the country current state. I mainly thought about industry moving factories and lots of companies shut down , politics going a bit bananas. But I am not going to discuss about the refugees coming or such. Let's please keep to the main topic.

You have no idea how clearly Finland is going towards the exact same direction. The first steps have already been taken.
I could literally move to Japan tomorrow if I had the chance, if I could just take some clothes and my laptop with me. I could clean Sushi restaurant toilets with minimum wage as long as I'll have an internet connection and a roof above me.

Yes, Sweden did make steps in that general direction back in the 60s and as I recall the public did not vote for the changes that were proposed.

I doubt that northern Sweden has changed that much though.

The UK has sharia law (no one voted that in and we ended up with it by stealth) and no go areas now. Expect to see minarets in nearly all english towns with plenty of seperatist schools often funded with Saudi money. I hear this over and over and to be honest it is one reason I left the UK.

A few of my swedish friends moved to Norway if that is any help.

I'll say it again:

Please, let's keep to the main topic. This is not what I intend to discuss. Please continue the discussion by pm if you feel the need to talk politics, I am not interested to talk about that topic. Please keep to the main point of the thread. Moving to japan.

I lived in South Korea for roughly 6 months with my wife and some of her relatives. This was years ago and obviously a different situation we knew we weren't staying there permanently. Was 6 months so not straight up vacation material either. Does your wife have any family still living in Japan ? Could always see if they can set you up with a temporary job.

I also didn't need to do the whole sell everything option so I guess it was more like Skykid in China all my stuff just stayed at my house back home. A grasp of the basic language for speaking and reading is a must, being able to write isn't as important. I ended up working for my wife's grandmother in her restaurant cleaning dishes and all sorts of odd jobs, going out and buying stuff for the restaurant every day. My way of making some money while we were over there to live off of for 6 months.

Explore! I must say I am jealous, I have yet to even travel to Japan so I hope you enjoy it.

We married after 3 years, I dont know if that's really "that" early but :). My wife stI'll has her family living in japan so that could be of some help. Althou I don't want them to "give" me a job just because I will be in a tough spot.. that would just make it all wierd with the rest of the family / relatives whom I know work really hard. I need to find something on my own. Or throu connections that I make along the way.

About selling the stuff I am so split.. in one way, since I hardly ever play/have time to play, then in one way it would feel good with a totally fresh start... when I first went to japan 2010 and stayed 1 year it felt so ooooooo good without all the stuff that constantly takes all my spare time.. now I was instead free to just walk around looking at the different things, talking with ppl, readING etc.. hehe it was a awesome year. I studied japanese and lived in a guest house with around 100 ppl total.

Edit: messed up the "in one way" :)

On the other hand I have spent MANY years collecting.. some of my games I will have a hard time funding again if I were to regret it. The pricing is totally different in japan.. some games in really cheap that are expensive here and the opposite. .. but all my rotary stuff will need to go cuz can't see that ever happening no mater how bad I want to.. :(.. don't even know if I'll have space for a cab in our upcoming apartment. (Firstly we will stay in the family house. . And there there are no chance in he'll I cab put a cab hahahaj).. they like games thou.. I saw an aes system on a shelf in their storing room that they bought on the release !! That's pretty awesome I thought :D. Didn't see any games thou, cuz all is in boxes but that aes box only took me a split second to see haha (eye's go in to "loot" mode automatically in japan)

I keep hearing that arcade board prices are getting higher in Japan nowadays, if you can, I would bring the older ones along and try to store the newer ones you really want to keep at a friends house in Sweden, or pay for storage. Maybe your wife can help you sell some on Yahoo? So when you visit Sweden again, you'll have time to consider what to do with the boards you keep in Sweden?

I agree with Emphatic: get a storage facility and perhaps the smallest size possible to store some of the collection. Also, mates might be able to look after things for you.

It may be that you have ideas to spend some time there but you may also only be there for a year or so. A lot will be down to employment options most of the time and it has to be said that Japan's economy is not as it was in the late 80s to early 90s and many youngsters in particular struggle to find long-term employment in Japan so take some caution.

I'd take the job offered by the family. Working conditions in Japan can be very hardcore and they don't give you much of a pass on account of being white. Also in Asia jobs passed on to family is kind of accepted.

Store them in Sweden. They will accumulate in value while you're away, trust me. And if you're thinking about starting collecting fresh in Japan, forget it. Goddamned expensive, often painfully so, especially in the streets. You might find the odd bargain on the outskirts and between major cities, but the desirable stuff will kneecap your wallet.

When I go back to Japan next time I'm not even going to bother shopping for games again. Learned my lesson last time, it was rough.

I lived in Japan for 2 years (after living in the States), got fluent in the language as well, but decided to go back to Germany (where I had grown up) as I find the quality of life better here. Not that Japan is a bad place to live, but unless you're working as an expat for a foreign company, professional life there is bullshit, imo.

It's funny that you want to get out of Sweden, as most of the rest of the world (with the exception of Norway and Switzerland maybe) generally point to Sweden as a glowing example of how to get shit right.
