Anisotropic filternig on PS4 and Xbox One

Post by Obiwanshinobi »

Not having either console, I found this article most interesting.

I can do without anti-aliasing and v-sync, but AF in most things 3D makes such a difference for me (and the cost never seemed disastrous) that I must wonder what those consoles could be missing.

Typically, if a game was playable on Radeon 8500 - it was playable with AF on too*, so the technique's real-time efficiency has been combat-proven for at least a decade and a half.

*) Made such a HUGE difference in Mafia I found it weird that there was no FA option in the menu and I had to force it via the graphics card control pannel.

This is something that is so incredibly basic that I expected 16xAF bare minimum this generation. I don't know what kind of ass backwards system they designed that somehow makes AF an intensive and bandwidth hungry process. When even that article shows that shitty low powered desktop APUs (Less powerful than the consoles) have 0 issue with 16xAF.

It's just crazy.

You *need* good texture filtering in this day and age.

I think GTAV on Xbox 360 (running somewhat smoother than PS3 version) was infamous for no filtering on the road (extraordinarily gash in this kind of car game, see Mafia again).

Great article by the df guys. I've noticed the blurriness in ultra street fighter 4 for ps4 when it first debuted. There were a plethora of issues upon release, thankfully capcom stepped in and was able to remedy that.

Cool article, I just started to notice this trend after reading a few DF comparisons. As DF said, the trade-off is usually worth it for the PS4's improvements over PC architecture.

That said, since I love video games, I'm not afraid to spend an extra couple hundred bucks to build a fast gaming PC that looks and runs better than the consoles in all respects.
