Silpheed for the PS2

Post by the2bears »

I just saw this at the local EB games for $6.99... didnt' buy it yet. I've heard it's pretty bad. Is it worth getting since the price is so cheap? Or, as I'm tending to think, is it not worth it at all because any time spent on it could be spent on other shmups?

Thanks,

Bill

At that price (new, right?) I'd say yeah go for it. If you're a shmup collector it's still an OK game to add to your collection. It has unusually high production values and therefore enough aesthetic appeal that you can get some pleasure out of it for an hour or two despite the slow gameplay. Even if you play it once a year you've probably still got your money's worth at that price, and you can probably sell it for close to that anyway later...

Too bad the old forums went down, one of the last threads there was a discussion on Silpheed for PS2.

IMO it's a pretty lame shmup...there's not a lot of substance to it, and the game only starts to heat up with the third boss i.e. the spikey wheel head of doom. After playing through all of it, though, the story was actually pretty interesting..besides the annoying voice actors, it's an OK game, but as a shmup there's nothing outstanding about it.

For $7, sure, I'd buy it. I got it for $20 new but I felt kinda cheated :(

It's definitely a flawed shmup, but not nearly as bad as some make it out to be. I paid $17 for it a couple of years ago and don't feel ripped off at all. The production values are nice, and one can almost see a good Treasure shmup buried underneath. For $6.99, just get it.

Hell, that's probably what I spent on lunch today...

Ok, I'm going back tomorrow. I feel a little stupid now that I didn't just buy it... I mean, only $7!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Silpheed The Lost Planet is not that bad...in fact its actually good enough!
Its more "old school" meets "new school", in tems of graphics.
There really is nothing wrong with it! Unless you compare the Japanese(Euro) version which DOES suffer from a tad bit more slowdown.

Just think of it as a "Raystorm style", or even if you're familar with the original on the Sega CD, its a "good enough" sequel.

Still, its not as bad as most make it out to be. Give it an honest try, just don't expect CAVE goodness, and you'll be fine with it. There are FAR worse shmups out there!

Yup, I own both this game and the SegaCD game. If you liked the SegaCD one, you will LOVE this game. As a game on its own, I like it. It's light years ahead of Silpheed on the SegaCD, and there's a scoring gimmick that rewards point-blanking, but there's no real inclination to aim for high scores since it doesn't replenish your shields or anything..

The ship's hitbox is SO DAMN HUGE. I suppose that's why you're offered so many lives.

I wrote a review here:

For $7 you really can't go wrong though.

Anyone play the original Silpheed on DOS? I hear it's better than the SCD version, which I thought was better than the PS2 version

I had the original DOS Silpheed for my Tandy 1000 computer when i was about 10. I got it at KB Toys for 10 bucks! I used to play it all the damn time, but I can't really say if it was good or not. I remember thinking it was really hard. And i remember liking the "base" levels. Lasers! Pretty impressive action compared to everything else i had on that damn thing.

You either got two choices:for 7 bucks you can go to Mc.donalds and buy junkfood or you can spend the whole sundayafternoon shooting the crap out of those alienmindedfreakmarspeople from space .

^^^ That's a great point, too.

Maybe that's why I'm so skinny, I'd always rather save a few bucks and starve for half a day if it means I can get a new shmup :)

Well, I'm not skinny at all... not fat either but McCrap wouldn't sit well in my belly. I'm off to the store, wife love's hitting the mall too so this is going to cost me more than $7 I'm afraid :P

Come on Twitch, fellas...show some standards here!

That $7 could be saved for a game you really like...more importantly is the time you could spend on worthier games.

There are very few shmups that I dislike. I actually like Silpheed TLP. I think I bought mine when it was new for $30.00, I never thought "ill" about my purchase either.

Silpheed TLP reminds me of those old PC-Engine shmups, nothing great, but its good enough. Although, there are many great PC-Engine titles, there were also some that were just "good enough" as opposed to great.

There were also some PC-engine titles that sucked, like Deep Blue. I wouldn't say that Silpheed sucks. I would agree with TWITCHDOCTOR: nothing great, but good enough.

I thought it was mediocre with a really cool final level. The final level alone is worth paying $7 for. 8)

Got it for $5 new awhile ago. Not worth anything to me except for collection purposes. Just too damn slow-paced and long for me. Plus, the 3D graphics look sorta ugly and the music was completely unmemorable. Better than PC Silpheed and SCD Silpheed IMO but that's not saying much. I don't know what Treasure did for the game but it didn't seem to help much.

Dammit, I just don't like most of Game Arts' stuff. I love Lunar and enjoyed Alisia Dragoon but Thexder, Silpheed, Grandia, and Gungriffon are all so boring to me...

I bloody love Silpheed: TLP. At $6.99 you can't fail.

But I did fail... went back and searched. The rack was a mess, but no game to be found. Which of you deduced my location and snatched it first? :)

Like others have said, it's not hard to justify a $7 purchase. And it isn't a terrible game, and in fact I'd say its a worthy sequel to the original. But when it comes down to it, you could just be playing something better. It's just an unexciting ride through charted waters.

You'll be very miffed if you're the type who likes using arcade sticks for shmuppin': Silpheed does not support sticks. It'll play fine if you have a PCB-hacked homebuilt stick, but not a Namco or Hori.

The game's challenge comes in the final levels, while the first few stages are kind of dull...the weapons aren't that hot either. $5 or $7 is not a bad price at all for it, but for a few bucks more you can pick up Castle Shikigami 2, which is a much more exciting game in general.

I've heard that Treasure made the game, but Game Arts directed them and told them what to do. Game Arts should just focus on a Lunar 3 for now.

When Treasure has a hit they really have a hit, but they also have their fair share of stinkers.
