Always glad to have another solid game to play on my Jaguar.

That's cool. Is that a convention you're at?

I'm wondering: what's currently the best console port of this game? There's no arcade close by (well, there is ONE, but I'm banned because the manager thinks I tried to steal an employee's phone).

My favorite is the PlayStation's Xevious 3D/G+ port, which includes not only the original Xevious (with tate option) but also my favorite Xevious game, Xevious Arrangement. The latter is more hectic and likely to fit contemporary tastes much better than the original while still having a retro-feel and respecting the artistic vision of the original. HIGHLY recommended. The game Xevious 3D/G is like a lot of 3D games on the PlayStation. Nothing too special.

If you just want the original Xevious on a high-def tv, the PS3 and 360 both have options. The PS3 is noteworthy for its collection (available download only) called Namco Museum Essentials. This collection includes the most recent game in the Xevious series, and it's not bad. I like this new title better than Xevious 3D/G.

Seconded. If you like anything about original Xevious, including the art and colors, Xevious Arrangement is great. It gets really punishing as you progress though, if you are playing as 1 player, you are on a checkpoint system when you die, and several of the later bosses seem virtually impossible to me as a single player. Xevious Arrangement was also available in the arcade in the 90s as part of Namco Classic Collection vol. 1 (not like I ever saw it in person, but its mame friendly)

Yes, I've seen someone bring in a Jamma upright cab with a Namco Classic Collection Vol. 1 PCB for all to try out on Free Play back in the mid-2000s at one of the California Extreme shows. It was a lot of fun to try it out as it was originally meant to played.

Glad to see someone remembered the Jaguar existed.

There aren't nearly enough ports of Xevious Arrangement. That would be just slightly cooler. But any Xevious is nicer than White Men Can't Jump.

Nice to see the effort given that the Jaguar could have been a great system for shmups (looking at the NATIVE demo; Raiden was also a solid port, at the time). But I'm not a huge fan of porting 30+ year old arcade games to 20+ year old consoles :P (in Atari circles that is a big thing on the 7800 for whatever reason). Would rather see a twist on the Xevious idea for the effort.

Speaking of the Atari 7800, there is Bullet Festival in development:

Bullet Festival seems pretty cool, like a paired down version of Cho Ren Sha 68K designed for the 7800 hardware.

At least for the 7800, porting 80s arcade games is somewhat period accurate when considering the feel of the traditional game library which included lots of other 80s arcade games like Asteroids, Galaga, Xevious, Dig Dug and others.
