Decided to install Windows 95 in VirtualBox for shits and giggles on my shitty old netbook I had lying around.

Installer gets most of the way though and then dies horribly with a GPF, messes up so badly that instead of a hex address, there's a long line of gibberish in the error box.
Turns out, I can't enable AMD-V because something about 16-bit Windows [installer is 3.x based], VirtualBox, and AMD-V don't mix at all, and it's a won't fix bug [workaround is to disable AMD-V for that VM, but now everything is miserably slow, it was like fucking lightning with AMD-V on right up until it crashed]. You can see the screen repaint slowly [and it's a weird kind of slow -- it doesn't peel onto the screen, but you can see all the GDI elements visibly being drawn in order, it's especially noticeable when you select a bunch of files]. Wanted to install Microsoft Arcade onto it or something, but that's out, not at that speed or lack thereof.

on a mostly unrelated note, I'm kind of annoyed that DOS doesn't like folder names with a trailing backslash [eg, doing cd "c:\windows\" instead of "cd c:\windows", or more egregiously, "c:\" is no good in the PATH, "c:" is what you actually wanted to type]

oh, and on a completely unrelated note, booking hotels for people is annoying as fuck

namely, VMWare Tools still supports 95
The emulated machine crashed when I installed Creative's sound drivers [that the VMWare docs said I needed], but when it came back up, I got sound.
Even got internet working [it's not pretty at all in IE3, but there's a SeaMonkey build on ToastyTech that works on '95 -- not 100% stable though].

Well it's rather unclear of course coming from Windows, but there are three statuses;
- critical/important
- recommended
- facultative

I went to have another look (it's in the windows update parameters in Metro) and the Win 10 upgrade is listed as 'facultative'.
Probably a matter of what you choose to let windows either warn you about aside from the bare essential.
I've noticed I have both auto updates and recommended checked actually, but from what I'm seeing even the recommended are not downloaded and installed automatically.
What's unchecked for sure is everything about updating non-crosoft apps.
Anyway from the history; Win 10 upgrade was cancelled many times (every time I closed the tray popup I imagine).

Hidden telemetry updates are forcing the updates through from what I've seen, nasty stuff. It's not just the update that installs GWX (the nag program that downloads Win10 in the background) you need to remove but several others as well.

Can't link to the forum I found where they list the specifics but a quick Google search and a bit of signing up should yield results.

For the past 2 months or so my gaming computer (read: slightly above average laptop) has been randomly losing internet connectivity for a minute or so before fixing itself, without any sort of OS notice besides an occasional yellow exclamation mark on the network toolbar icon: It might not happen at all one day, or it might start happening every 3 or 4 minutes another day, in any case immediately disconnecting from the network and reconnecting seems to immediately bring back connectivity (although that won't stop it from breaking again 2 minutes later).

Doesn't seem to be happening to any other devices in the house, like my work laptop or consoles, so it doesn't seem to be an issue with my router. Restarting the system and power cycling the network adapter doesn't seem to do anything.

I have no clue what's wrong, and it's incredibly irritating.

The network adapter could be on its way out. It happened to me with a wireless PCI card before it went belly up. Try with a USB adapter and see if it happens with it or not.

Its a joke with insurance policies at the moment, they were doing the same for my motorcycle insurance even though I had an extra one years no claims they raised the price by £75 and told me they wouldnt be able to insure my other bike on the same policy since it was deemed as too expensive despite doing so for the last 2 years....they keep suggesting its fraudulent drivers and con artists who are doing the crash for cash scams who are bumping up the claims but I would have thought they have a handle on that situation by now.
