You can still get the monster cable for pretty cheap. Same connector for PS1-PS3 so it doesn't matter which version you get.

The fat PS2's cooling fan creates visible noise over component anyway.
Even pure gold wires wouldn't eliminate that.

theres a couple different monster ones, theres one thats similar to the gamecube one but cheaper and for ps2/3 and then theres some really weird looking one.
perhaps you could specific which, if thats not to much trouble?

well...

in other words, they're all good. You're worrying about it a little to much. No cable can magically give you better picture quality, the best they can do is be wired properly and give you a little bit of shielding. Many 3rd party cables are fine, the official cables are fine, the only time you have to worry is with a super cheap, generic cable from Amazon or Ebay.

Ya I second that cheap eBay avoidance. I would opt for OEM used on eBay from an American seller. My cheap ones eventually fell apart. I didn't notice any noise on the cheap ones but if gravity and air breaks them that's a fail in my book

First I've heard of this. Is there any particular model with superior component quality? I've gotten rid of my PS2, but will eventually acquire another one and this is relevant.

Based only on my personal observation of a various fat models while testing for displays and scalers.
But to me it's almost certainly the main reason for the small wavy-like diagonal lines pattern 'noise' which is more or less visible depending on the colors.
The fan temp°/throttle steps may vary with revisions but if you watch closely the interference 'noise' while listening to the fan activity, you'll realize there's a direct relationship.

Thanks for tech info. Tell us more.
Is there a cure we can offer our fatties for this illness?
I do have to admit I'm not 100% sure yet when or how this is observed, but I believe you. The signal really isn't that good, that's all I know. Will curing this give an overal (even if slightly) better picture?

No idea sorry, I've just observed that behaviour, never took the time to reserch a solution.
I bet something to filter the interference from the fan would be used at some point in the circuitry, or some trick to insulate whatever component is affected from it.
Could be an easy mod or quite complex, dunno.
If something like that would work it would just eliminate the visible interference pattern, the picture quality otherwise would remain unchanged.

Basically one has a death grip (original) and the other doesn't (new design). I'm curious to know if there are any differences between the two.

Those will most likely give you problems if they are that cheap.

Stick with these:

Yep, this is a decent price. Just think of the $10 extra as buying some peace of mind. The $4 cables may be fine, but the last time I bought cables that cheap, they were improperly grounded and I couldn't hook them up to my TV and stereo separately without losing picture.

And besides peace of mind, the monster cables are made with pretty good materials and probably last you a lifetime.

Those are fine but not for $24. The monster cables are probably the better way to go. Cheaper and for the most part are made better.

honestly didnt even notice the shipping cost was just looking for a good image version to be honest, they are much cheaper on amazon around ~$15 used (including shipping price) though, i can kinda assume they're identical in quality

edit: seems the product made the decision for me, the xrgb mini that i connnect my ps2 to does not have optical audio in, which is the only format that monster cable has for audio it would seem.

There is a PS2 monster cable (colored blue) that has analog audio, I bet there are PS3 versions with it too.

When it comes to visual quality, there is no difference between an official brand cable, monster cable, or any other third party cable that is wired correctly. So you are overthinking this a little bit.

For example, if I hooked up three PS2's to a TV, one with monster cables, the other with the Sony brand cables, and the third with a decent third party cable (like Rocketfish), and switched between inputs, you'd never be able to tell the difference.

i probably am overthinking it i tend to do that a lot

but this is mainly due to that, my gamecube's svideo cables are really bad quality, so i mean there must be a difference between the name brand and "budget" brands in terms of quality in that regard. so i am thinking it must be similar to the ps2/3 component cables as well, in that there is a quality difference.

I assume you don't have a Receiver otherwise I would say Optical is the way to go.

Here are the component cables with analog audio:

You bought one of the SUPER cheap cables that was wired improperly inside the cable. It probably had composite video wired to luma or chroma. So what I'm trying to say is, as long as it is wired correctly, you will never tell a difference.

Look at this example of Monster Cable vs coat hangers:

I've tried various brands, (monster, rocket dog, psyclone, energizer) and my simplest advice is that if it's branded and not a standard looking (think oe composite) type cable, you're fine. Going rate should be no more than $15.

The usual YMMV applies as always - but before you commit to that connection you may want to read:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 92#p869192
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 11#p869611
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 10#p870010
Now granted the latest firmware updates may have improved the situation but I haven't run across anything yet that would suggest it.

I personally would consider the PS2 game library 480i heavy especially if you are running a stock PS2 with stock firmware. So RGB may be preferable over YPbPr. Right now these cables are available:
Sony Playstation XRGB JP-21 lead Japanese 21 pin PS1 PS2 Sync-on-Luma cable
Sony Playstation RGB SCART lead PS1 PS2 Sync-on-Luma GROUNDED cable cord lead
Lots of people happily pipe PS2 YPbPr and/or 480p through their XRGB-mini - just not everybody.

My local Meijer recently had (and probably still does) the official PS3 component cables. These work perfectly with the PS2. They're not the cheapest cables money can buy ($13?), but they are definitely high enough quality.

These.

For some reason I still have the back insert of the blister pack on my desk, it says:

Component AV Cable (at the top left)

SCPH-10490 (at the bottom left)
