What's got me particularly excited about this new fanzine is that it appears to be heavily influenced by my absolute all time favorite magazine the legendary Super Play!!
Which for those who don't know was a nineties UK SNES mag that covered tons of import games, RPGs, anime and Japanese culture.

Obviously the more you pay us, the more time we can spend on future issues and the better we can make HyperPlay RPG fanzine! We think you'll like what you see in issue 0.

Looks very nice and reminds me of Superplay :)

I am not a big RPG player myself (never had the time since I was a kid) but I am happy to see that you are working on a Fanzine so I bought a copy to show support.

I loved played Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana and Zelda 3 20+ years back and used to follow Superplay religiously :)

Just an aside: zero is not a number.

Cheers,

Minty.

Thanks for buying a copy but it's not my fanzine.
I just really like printed fanzines and I'm a massive fan of Super Play magazine, so I just wanted this new fanzine to be a success.

Zero is a number, even one at that.
The ostensibly jRPG/console/Nintendo-centric cover looks confrontational to me, but it's not like I'm the target audience.

It is not a number in a release sequence. You cannot have the zeroth edition you can only have the "first edition".

The only thing you can't do with zero that you can do with the rest or real numbers is division by it.

That is true but zero is not a counting number:

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/CountingNumber.html

You can divide by zero if you wish but it tends to infinity :) I realise that computers cannot divide by zero but you 'can' according to the maths.

No you can't. You can only approximate to it infinitely. Division by the very zero is not defined.

It tends to infinity - recall infinitesimals:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinitesimal

Recall also in Calculus how limits work.

Also, how reciprocals work with fractions:

1/10 = 0.1
1/1 = 1
1/0.10 = 10
1/0.01 = 100
1/0.001 = 1000
..
1/0 tends to infinity.

Ok, we are talking Calculus here for the concepts.

I always recall velocity being infinite at the tip of an aircraft's wing as the area the force is applied to tends to zero.

Cheers,

Minty.

Right, sorry to jump in on this riveting conversation to talk about the topic at hand, but although the idea of a fanzine is cute in 2015 this one doesn't quite do it for me. As an undying Super Play worshipper I can certainly see the influence: they completely ripped off the logo and quite poorly adapted the first two letters.

I'm a little biased perhaps because reading an entire publication dedicated to RPGs is something I'd never do. I'm just not diehard enough for the genre.

Either way, wishing the guy well. I support creativity if nothing else!

To define division by a real number (such as zero), we need one (no more, no less) real number for each and every dividend. Infinity is not a real number, therefore it can't be a quotient.
There is no real number that multiplied by 0 would equal 1.

You are missing the point. Observe the tendence to infinity as the divisor becomes infinitesimally small as give by the reciprocals above - you end up with a value that tends to the infinite.

Zero is a member of the set of real numbers - true. But it is not a counting number:

"Counting Numbers are Whole Numbers, but without the zero. Because you can't "count" zero" - which is what I raised with the Fanzine being 'issue zero' instead of issue one.

http://www.mathsisfun.com/whole-numbers.html

The initial matter here is that you cannot have a zeroth magazine issue as zero is not a counting number.

If I have a wife, divorce her I have zero wives. But I had one wife.
You do not get put on death row for murdering zero individuals - there are entry requirements - namely you have got to have killed at least one individual (most likely more) in order to get into the death row league. Hence the use and application of counting numbers.
If this were not true we would all be on death row for having killed zero individuals which we aren't - those counting numbers come in handy for, well, counting things, Obi :)

I wasn't gonna bring this up, but this thread looks like it needs the help.

What could there possibly be about Final Fantasy 4 that I don't already know? Short of performing an analysis of its assembly or learning Japanese and stalking everyone on its staff, what more could be gleamed?

I know it's attention bait. But the chutzpah is pretty high on this claim.

speaking of zero being a real number is it fair to say... pay what you will, I will pay $0 for the zeroth edition of this zine? (usually a zero edition in comics is backstory? but I'm not much of a comic book collector myself)
joking aside, I'm not part of the target demographic either, but it's fantastic seeing more niche related zines hitting the scene.

it probably wouldn't sell having these games as a front story, but if I saw some names like moon: remix rpg adventure and lack of love I might feel inclined to buy that copy.

I'm guessing in this case the issue zero stemmed from some popular nineties gaming magazines such as Edge and Mean Machines which had pilot issues numbered zero.
The concept of having an issue zero has been around for a long time and usually denotes either a pilot or prologue/back story.

I dare say so. But, issue number one was good enough for Superplay - so it is good enough for me too :D

I dare say it is a pilot this time but in a way all first issues are always the pilot.

Either way it bears little relevance and I only mentioned it as an aside :D

I bought one of these a couple weeks ago and I don't think it ever showed up. Not a big deal given the cost, but I'm still disappointed as I was looking forward to it.

Really that's surprising, have you contacted the guy behind it to say you didn't receive your copy? I'm positive he'd send you a replacement.

Hi there!

Kincl here, editor of HyperPlay RPG. We've only had one instance of someone not receiving their copy of Issue 0 (out of about 600 sold) and that was immediately remedied by putting one in the post on the same day notified.

Otherwise we have not heard of anyone not receiving their copy (usually within a couple of days of ordering it).

Please would you let me know your name and address and I'll get one in the post to you asap.

Thanks for your support, everyone

Surprised us too!

First we've heard about it, other than one copy which apparently got lost in the post so we immediate sent another. Hopefully CStarFlare will come back to this thread and let us know a bit more, particularly if they have now got their copy: wouldn't like people to have a bad impression of HyperPlay RPG when we do our utmost to get copies out to our readers asap at the cheapest possible purchase price (barely covering publishing/printing/packaging/postage)!
