Don Yoku Available on Steam
Re: Don Yoku Available on Steam
Here you can see the player sprite, hitbox and bullets being overlaid.

Here you can see it's easy to break the controls. All I did was try to use the same two for everything, and because arrow controls are not printed you can't see which are assigned and which were deleted. I have no A button now, so ... oh well - time to delete the config again.

Also the prompts for setting keys are confusing, it starts with press A to start, then when you press A it says 'ESC TO CONTINUE' or similar. When am I supposed to press these?
Not sure what you mean about Chrome, I don't use that browser - I'm launching from Steam desktop application.

Watched the first three stages on Youtube and I must say, this looks fun. Touhou bullet speeds, Fire Shark styling, Garegga HUD, Cave patterns.
I agree you might consider moving the pilot name to the top right of the screen so that the lower portion is uncluttered, and if you fix the unintuitive button mapping issues (cos horrible) I'd be up for it when the Mac version rolls around.

Actually the lower text is the rank; it raises along with coins. As rank raises so does difficulty.
Actually you are the first person who have an issue with rank text, it had been placed there to avoid cluttering screen top part. I'll consider your idea though.
Regarding key bindings you hare right, I've tested it yesterday and I'm working on a solution.
Thanks for pointing it out

I did mention the key binding the day after release, but on the steam forum for the game.

I mostly appreciate the fact that the developer of Don'Yoku obviously put a lot of effort into making it presented as though it were an actual 90's arcade game, but the gameplay does seem a bit slow for my tastes.Skykid wrote:Watched the first three stages on Youtube and I must say, this looks fun. All these videos are recorded at 'Normal' difficulty, which is a soft version of the game, Arcade difficulty have bullets twice as fast.Lobinden wrote:I mostly appreciate the fact that the developer of Don'Yoku obviously put a lot of effort into making it presented as though it were an actual 90's arcade game, but the gameplay does seem a bit slow for my tastes.Skykid wrote:Watched the first three stages on Youtube and I must say, this looks fun. Yes I know this link, but my unterstanding off:
"Download this game by purchasing it for 10.00€ EUR or more. You will receive a Steam key with your purchase."
is, that I pay and get the game on Steam. Is this assumtion wrong?
EDIT:
As I thought, just bougth it and regret it, cause its from Steam. You can pay at the obove mentioned site, but get a Steam Retail install.

It says it comes with a Steam key, and you get access to a 395MB file that you can download (there should be a link in your account under "Purchases & Gifts" once you log in).Shadolf wrote:Yes I know this link, but my unterstanding off:

Re: Don Yoku Available on Steam
It says right at under the buy it now button that you get a DRM free install. All games on itch.io are DRM free. If you want the game buy it from there because it's awesome what they do and the dev gets slightly more money.
In order to download this game you must purchase it at or above the minimum price of 10.00€ EUR. Your purchase comes with a Steam key. You will get access to the following files:
DonYokuWindows.rar 395mb
Re: Don Yoku Available on Steam
Yes I have seen that and bought the game over itch.io and I downloaded it from that mentioned link. What I got was a rar file with the install data in it and guess what, you have to install STEAM in order to install the game. DRM free is something other!DoomsDave wrote:It says right at under the buy it now button that you get a DRM free install. All games on itch.io are DRM free. I have to say that the game itself is f**kin nice, but they really have to sell it DRM free at GOG. This Steam install isn´t acceptable. A retail one with additional playmodes and use of the analogue stick from the xbox360 pad would also be nice.
EDIT:
Played it for some time at my Cab now. The setup of the controls was some pain in the ass, cause the buttons I pressed doesn´t show up in the menu but the game has them already assigned. Another problem is, that I can´t configure the start button. So I always have to push enter at the keyboard. That´s bad if you play at your cab and always have to run to the PC.
Steam annoys me every time when I start the game

Re: Don Yoku Available on Steam
Played this a bit last night. I like it, I think it could be a great score game. Random thoughts:
- It's a shame coins are worth nothing until the stage is over - it's an unnecessary way to plateau the scores and end bonuses are effectively the only score in the game.
- I think I understand the laser/graze mechanic, but unless I'm missing something it's worthless - the number of coins you get from using the laser is nothing compared to the Don Yoku (which can add literally millions in one shot), so you should basically only use the main shot because it earns you more Don Yoku shots which are the only way to get a reasonable number of coins (and is your only defensive move as well). I really like the Don Yoku but the rest of the mechanics seem pushed aside by it.
Still, pushing for score is fun. I broke 10 million coins in stage 1, which lead to me getting slaughtered by the boss because of rank. Of course, my final score was like 20k because I never got a stage bonus
EDIT: I have to revise my opinion somewhat.
System11 is entirely right about the stuff at the bottom of the screen. I'm quite sure they do cover your hitbox and even if they don't, they are on top of the bullets and even if they didn't do that, they're EXTREMELY in the way when you're trying to dodge boss attacks at max rank. It's really annoying to play on max rank (I think it's the max? It's called Rittmeister and it seems to stick around no matter how high I go) because you know that if you get forced to the bottom of the screen you are fucked, and it's quite an easy rank to hit.
Example screenshot.
None of these things need to be there - there's room for lives up top, rank could be communicated by say changing the coin graphic at the top (or not at all; the display now communicates nothing and is misleading - I'm guessing it only covers the rank of enemy fire while revenge bullets ramp up without any change in the rank) and credits have no relevance until you're sitting at the game over countdown. If these things have to remain, the display should vanish when you're playing in that area - see how Deathsmiles handles its display when the player moved to the top of the screen. Alternately, you could just not let the player move to the very bottom of the screen - it's quite common to not be able to move down to the bottom pixel.
Also, when I hit big combos (I got my coin count into 50 million tonight) the game literally stops, audio and all, for over a second. And when I pull these things off I feel GREAT, until I realize that the stage 1 boss's opening attack is going to steal all my lives and I'll have nothing to show for my mad routing skills. The cutoff for max rank is quite low so even though I lose half my coins when I get hit the rank never falls.
There's interesting stuff going on from a scorer's perspective but sometimes it feels the game wasn't tested by someone who was pushing it that way.

About DRM:
To allow steam distribution, the game must include stuff from Steam SDK. This keep the files updated and versions consistency.
Now, to release a non DRM version, we have to release a file without Steam stuff in it. This version could not work in steam and we should keep it updated manually. each time we release a small fix we have to post an update and mail it to the users. Also, if the users skip an update, he or she would not be able to play anymore.
This is quite the predicament for a small studio like us. The limited resources and time oblige us to make some choices.
It is perfectly possible to use the game offline; just install steam and Don'Yoku, the always run that system with steam offline.
About game optimization:
Don'Yoku had been tested by 20 persons for over 2 months. Of course none of the testers had been able to score so high at the time. We are currently reviewing the game engine. Soon we'll release a game update with severan fixes and some extra goodies ^_^.

Re: Don Yoku Available on Steam
This game seems a little rough around the edges but it's fun! It seems to be a bit "choppy" and slows down when using the laser.
As far as gameplay goes I don't like how you power down upon getting hit. On high rank and high difficulties this makes recovering from a hit really hard since you suddenly can't build don-bombs anywhere near as fast as normal. It really feels like one mistake and you might as well restart, for scoring or survival.
Also, is there anyway to restart without just suiciding? That would be handy.
The number of coins you can build up by bombing is crazy! This is kind of fun I must admit. I got 21.5 million points on stage 1 on maniac. Maybe if everything wasn't back ended to the end stage bonus would be a good thing, but it's also a matter of taste to an extent. It does make boss fights extra intense when you see the massive number of coins you want to carry through. The laser does have its uses when trying to just survive, but it's score potential does seem pretty limited compared to bomb spam.
Well, whether you listen to what I say or not I'm looking forward to the update!

Re: Don Yoku Available on Steam
Played this a bit more, increased my high score to 29 million in maniac. That's just stage 1 scoring of course. Some observations:
Rank seems to be based on coinage and that means things can take drastic turns!
While in the stages it seems to mostly affect suicide bullets, boss fights at high rank are a whole different story, even on normal. I first saw this on Ironclad, since it's easy to get mega coins from the ship turrets, and this makes the boss outrageous.
Is it even possible to dodge those attacks at high rank?! I wonder if there's any way to deal with his don-shield apart from waiting for it to go away.
It's fun to try and drive up rank in stage 2 to try and make the boss ultra aggressive, but it's not fun having to avoid scoring altogether in the final stages.
The fact that you can't reliably lower rank confounds this - especially since getting hit lowers your power level which is a huge disadvantage. Playing at high rank and making the most of don-bombs is great - it's viable to just use the shot and bomb frequently - you do decent damage thanks to the bombs, it's just a question of whether or not you can dodge long enough to build them up again and again. But this just stops as soon as you power down. At lower rank you can try and dodge and kill it normally but you really need bombs to survive at high rank.
The music is awesome!
Based on achievements there seems to be an unlockable character, I guess 1CC is required?
Otherwise I only use the Red Baron character with the narrowest shot. Surely it's the extreme utility of his bomb that makes him the ace of aces!
Game doesn't run particularly well with stuttering during big gets (SDOJ style) but also just general loss of frames. It's a shame because a lot of the art looks good, but that doesn't matter when it doesn't run smoothly.
I really hate those planes that come from the bottom corners of the screen and shoot bullets that shoot bullets from the bottom of the screen.

Re: Don Yoku Available on Steam
Today I got through Stage 1 with 100 million coins - 115 million, actually! When you cross the 100 mil mark your coin display goes funny - it only has room for 8 so it cuts the final digit, so it seems to roll from 90 to 10 million. But at the end of the stage it gives you the full value, so all is well.
I'm looking forward to the update. I'm able to get to stage 3 while scoring now - can usually no miss the stage 1 boss at max rank which is very satisfying - and stage 3 is ridiculous with all the shit flying from behind. I guess I'll focus on scoring in stage 2 instead!
While we're at it, is there any way we could get a training mode? Routing is so important in this game that it'd be very useful to be able to route later stages without going through the early ones.

I made a quick video demonstrating how I get 100 million on stage 1 - it was my first run of the day, so I was surprised to pull it off. My screencap software kills my framerate so I used my iphone - apologies for the quality, but I think it's good enough for my purposes.
