Your most played Nintendo 3DS games?

Post by Bonus! »

Since the members of this forum presumably have a much more eclectic taste than the gaming part of the general public, I'd be curious what your most played Nintendo 3DS games are. According to the charts in the activity log application, my top 10 is as follows:

1. Kokuga (40:22) -- not done with it yet
2. Super Mario 3d Land (32:16) -- still have to beat 8-Crown
3. Legend of Zelda: Link between Worlds (31:58) -- Hero Mode still awaiting
4. Fire Emblem Awakening (22:33) -- beaten
5. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (8:03) -- beaten
6. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (6:20) -- didn't hook me; sold
7. Tetris Ultimate (4:26) -- sold
8. Donkey Kong Country Returns (4:18) -- didn't like it; sold
9. Code Name STEAM Demo (2:48) -- liked it; will buy after I've gotten a New 3DS
10. Luigi's Manson 2 (2:22) -- didn't like it; sold

There are quite a few 3DS games I played for only a little bit. I tend to give a game about half an hour to an hour, and if it does not draw me in, or at the very least makes me curious for more, I tend to dismiss them. In the case of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, though, I realized that I have to get a New 3DS because of the additional analog stick.

Fire Emblem Awakening easily. I took especially long to beat it because I went for a low level run on hard. Still have yet to take on the dlc.

After that would probably be Smash 4 and then Shin Megami Tensei 4. Last place would probably be Code of Princess (was enjoying it, especially the goofy script, but got sidetracked and still need to beat it). Aaaaand that's all I have lol.

Pokemon Omega Ruby

Basically Pokemon is the only portable game that I am willing to invest time into.

Fantasy Zone
Fantasy Zone II
Outrun
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars

Are really the only 3DS games I've played much of.

Crimson Shroud and Fire Emblem Awakening on the list of things I need to play really soon.

3DS library is pretty unappealing to me :|

Shin Megami Tensei IV: 86.24
Soul Hackers: 52.22
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate: 32.28 (never really got that far.)

1. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - 69:51 ; Far and away the best game on the system.
2. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 35:50 ; I got a Wii U, moved my save file over there, and never looked back.
3. SMT4 - 32:24 ; Crap game, couldn't bother finishing it.
4. Persona Q - 22:57 ; Enjoyed it until I realized that everything was weak to hama and/or mudo. Another bad game.
5. Pokemon Y - 21:55 ; I really liked the presentation overhaul, but this is the worst game in the main series. So boring.
6. Ocarina of Time 3D - 21:01 ; Played through it once. It's an alright game, but I can't fathom why so many people think it's one of the best ever. Probably nostalgia (I loved it as a kid, too).
7. Super Mario 3D Land - 12:43 ; Great.

After that it goes into the single digits with games that I barely played or didn't like enough to continue with. The 3DS library just doesn't do much for me. I still need to play Ace Attorney 5 and Devil Survivor 2, though.

1. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate 429:46
2. Bravely Default 187:09
3. Puzzle and Dragons (both Z and Mario combined) 138:26
4. Mario Golf World Tour 126:12
5. Fire Emblem Awakening 124:37
6. SMT IV 95:21
7. Animal Crossing New Leaf 90:32
8. Denpa Men 50:57
9. Super Smash Bros 45:26
10. Nintendo eShop 43:25
11. Pushmo 38:01

As you can tell, I have spent an absurd amount of time on MH4U (still not G Rank yet, though I'm close). Good stuff. I went to 11 since number 10 is not a game. Not sure how I spent that much time in the eShop.

Here's my top-10 by playtime, 3DS software only:

1 Pokemon Y - 56:25 [haven't played in forever, beat the main story in exactly 20 hours]
2 Tales of the Abyss - 50:44
3 Colors 3D - 18:37
4 Pushmo - 7:12
5 Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance - 6:17 [and that's as long of the game as I could stand]
6 Sakura Samurai - 5:46
7 Mario 3D Land - 5:11
8 3D Kirby's Adventure - 4:53 [still need to 100% it]
9 3D Super Hang-On - 4:08 [this is the only 3DS game I've played in the last couple months]
10 Korg M01D - 3:57
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

1. Bravely Default 110:23
2. Super Smash Bros 100:34
3. Zelda Majora's Mask 50:28
4. Fire Emblem Awakening 44:00
5. Mario Kart 7 29:06
6. Super Mario 3D Land 23:20
7. Starfox 64 14:26
8. Zelda LttP 2 14:26
9. Mario Golf 12:12
10. Space Harrier 12:12

Either I read those last four entries wrong or that's a hell of a coincidence. Either way, too lazy to turn the 3DS back on to check.

100% in Bravely Default. I think I liked it more than most, but I'm a little iffy on trying the sequel.

This has turned into a pretty interesting thread with some very impressive numbers! Somehow I would have expected Zelda: A Link between worlds in everyone's list, so it's probably not quite as popular as I thought (fantastic game, though). I'll check out Pushmo and Sakura Samurai. Particularly the former seems to be a much meatier game than I thought, and I like a good puzzle game. Code of Princess looks good, but sadly it's only available as a rather expensive digital release in Europe.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I noticed it had a low star rating on JP Amazon, but that doesn't always mean anything.

It won't ever come over, but there's a region-free hack for 3DS if you're really desperate.

It was made by a different developer (G.rev) and isn't as good as the previous games, mainly because the games went from looking retro to just looking like cheap smartphone games.

Are these your first Atlus games? SMT4 is pretty much standard SMT fair...probably easier than most of the numbered entries though marred by the shitty map. Persona Q is basically Etrian Odyssey reskinned with new Persona options. Both seem like good to great entries in their respective series.

I so much wanted the 3DS to be my entry into Monster Hunter, but it just seems the stars weren't in alignment (IE Bloodborne happened). Envious!

I think SMT IV is pretty good, gameplay wise, but could have been great with just a few tweaks.

Mid-dungeon saving anywhere really kills the tension in dungeon crawls imo, and pretty much nobody likes the brute forcing that results from the removed defense stat.

I've played Nocturne, Persona 2, 3, 4 (a bit of 1 too but it was garbage), Strange Journey, and Devil Survivor. I thought SMT4 was far worse than all of those (besides P1). The game just has nothing going for it at all. Save anywhere removes all tension & difficulty from the game, the dungeons are short and practically non-existent, you can put a ton of overpowered skills onto your character and min/max your stats to steamroll every non-boss enemy you come across, the story and characters are dull and uninteresting, the art style is inconsistent, and smirk is just a really stupid mechanic. The music was good though, and the only other good thing I can say about it is that it has visible enemies on the map. Random encounters are terrible.

I don't see how Persona Q is good at all. I'm not exaggerating when I say that 95+% of the enemies are weak to hama and mudo (at least in the first 20+ hours). Those spells normally cost a lot of SP in the other games, but that doesn't matter at all in PQ because your personas give you a bunch of extra SP that refills at the start of every battle. There's almost no reason to do anything but spam hama and mudo, which is just boring as hell. And the boss fights are massive damage sponges, so those aren't good either. At least you can't save anywhere, but the game sucks all the same.

I think your opinion is pretty extreme, but I have to agree with this. I have no clue why they changed the artist, since it almost defines the SMT games. For me personally this was the most disappointing part. Overall I really liked SMT4.

Got the console at launch, here's my most played games (excluding DS/DsiWare/Virtual console games) :

01- Tales of the Abyss 107:44
02- Kid Icarus Uprising : 92:46
03- 3D Super Hang-On : 69:35
04- Hatsune Miku : Project Mirai DX : 62:33
05- Devil Survivor Overclocked : 54:49
06- Sayonara Umihara Kawase : 43:19
07- Virtue's Last Reward : 40:31
08- Karous -The Beast of Re:Eden- : 31:48
09- Shinobi : 19:14
10- 3D AfterBurner II : 17:10

Not a bad console, but the library is clearly not as huge as its predecessor's. Region locking is annoying as well.
I also have a few hours on Code of Princess which is not a bad game, but isn't extraordinary either. While the characters look really good, the combat didn't feel visceral enough to me.

Code of Princess is one of those games where I have no idea if the combat is actually really good, and I'm just playing it wrong, or it is indeed just clunky.

Regardless, I was playing it pretty much for the sense of humor. The script is surprisingly charming.

Given the huge variety of characters in the free play modes, some might be more fun to use (while some others are downright joke characters), but overall I feel like it is kinda clunky indeed and I am not a fan of the lock + burst mechanic as well as it clashes a bit with the whole crowd control aspect of a beat'm up by giving you incentives to focus on a specific enemy.
I haven't played more than 15 hours and didn't try the online modes though, so I could be missing something. If someone has more experience with this game and underwent a dramatic enlightenement regarding Code of Princess' mechanics and how to properly play it, feel free to guide us lol.

The game's light-hearted sense of humor is defintely one of its highlights, I enjoyed it as well.

The Xbox One tracks your play time on each game, but I don't think there's an all-in-one activity log like the 3DS/Wii U have.

1. MH4U - 608:30 (no regrets)
2. Fantasy Life - 49:15 (masochism; got bored ~15 hours in, kept hoping it'd get interesting)
3. PADZ/SMB - 25:08 (almost all on the SMB side, as I thought Z was awful; I spend incredibly more time [and money] on the mobile version)
4. Bravely Default - 12:57 (currently playing, obviously not very far, loving it)
And then some shit under 10 hours that isn't worth mentioning.

Backlog in order: Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (never played at Atlas game; heard this was a good entry point to the series), Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (I haven't played a Zelda game since LttP in the 90s--don't judge me), and then I don't know. I got New Super Mario Bros 2 recently, so likely that. I'm also kind of interested in Code of Princess, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, and obviously the other EO games if I end up loving the first.

I need another 12 hours added to my days so I can play all these before I turn 40.

Are you still playing? Since this game is on my backlog and I have yet to properly get started: how long does a typical session last? Can you get something out of this game if you play 45 min to an hour per session?

Occasionally, yeah. The first two months I had the game, I played it obsessively for hours (obviously). You can most definitely make progress with 45-60 minutes of play. Depending on how far you are in the game, you should be able to do 1-5 quests in that time (average quest time is around 10-15 minutes for low/high rank solo). Make use of outside resources if you want to progress faster (locating rare materials, figuring out key quests, so on and so forth).
