STG Gameside closing up

Post by blackoak »

Sad news: found out today that our beloved shmup magazine STG Gameside is closing. Much of the material I translated for the forum was from this publication... I'm still trying to get to that Zanac developer interview from their last issue, too.

Without STG Gameside's work it's really questionable if we'll find out any more about old shmups. I can tell you from my recent research at the National Diet Library that after about 1990, shmups received almost no coverage from game publications other than Gamest. STG Gameside was really a lone beacon for this kind of work...

that's a shame. neat little mag with only 13 issues so far (0 and 1-12).

With the rough google translation it looks like the (soon to be released) #13 is canned as well, right ?

That's a real shame.

I looked forward to this magazine and have most of them.
We saw some great articles on series.

All may not be lost though in terms of material as I dare say there is a stack on material to be found in the old magazines.

I have not looked but do collections of old magazines come up on Yahoo in Japan?
Also, if there are shops that sell back issues that may be an option too.

This is my fault for being interviewed.

RIP. I can't read much of it, but it seemed like they put a lot of effort into each issue. 150+ pages, all nicely laid out and such.

absolutely. Mags get quite heavy though. Most (all?) Shooting Gameside issues should still be available from Amazon JP though. You don't need a proxy for that that their shipping rates for stuff like this are excellent.

Yes, I bought a couple of copies from Amazon Japan myself and some other Japanese Shmup related books.

I forgot that Blackoak is not based in Japan so shipping to the US would be a bigger factor.

I can well imagine some of us lot in our old folks' home talking about Shmups.

You never know they may have Shmuppers' Old Folk's Homes by that time.

Still, it gets me thinking about what to do with my collection when I get to be too old to play any Shmups. I am hoping that all this will be preserved some how and maybe they will have a Shmup shrine.

The god of Shmup, there's an idea.
