PAL N64 RGB mod: VileTim or Otaku??

Post by PascalP »

As I live in Europe and have to deal with a PAL N64 console I'm looking into going beyond the S-Video output and modding it to RGB.
Especially since I recently bought a BVM-A20F1M which doesn't support S-Video like my PVM, it is a must to mod it!

Now there is the Otaku N64 RGB for all kit and there is the VileTim N64RGB mod.
The Otaku is easily available where I live (the Netherlands) where the VileTim is not...

I'm willing to pay some extra for shipping for the VileTim if there is a benefit to the Otaku, or do you think both offer similar quality when compared?

The VileTim I think is a little easier to install and gives you the options to use a PAL or NTSC scart cable.

Thanks for your comments and sharing of experiences!

Another option is a french Pal N64 with the right mods.

I'm also wondering about the best option.

French would be easier to mod with for the 'other' Otaku kit.
But I would expect the image quality being the same as an Euro console with the 'Universal' kit.

Or someone would prove me wrong and I will track down a French version ;)
Should't be to hard to come by in the Netherlands or Belgium I think...

Not a solution for you but maybe for other people which might end up in this topic! I bought a modified S-Videocable from Consolegood.co.uk and it's amazing how much better the picture looks!

About the kits - i think both do their own digital to analog conversion while modding a french console connects the analog RGB to the correct pins (which means the N64 turns it into analog by itself)

Well we used to fit both (or rather Ray did), depending on whatever the customer sent in. He said he couldn't see any difference between the two personally. That wasn't using the kind of capture card comparison scrutiny we all love on here or anything like that of course, just his opinion.

I've done a couple of Tim's N64RGB mods, and let me tell you.. you better be an ACE with a soldering iron! Those pins are less than 1mm apart!!!

A better solution is to get an NS1xxx N64 unit (not sure how serial # maps to PAL systems) and use the simpler RGB amp. I've done dozens of these. If a customer brings me a newer system (e.g. NS5xxx or NS6xxx) I ask them if they'll be willing to trade systems for $20. They all say yes. I go to the local video game store (which has A LOT of N64 systems) and for only $20, they swap the NS5/6xx for an NS1xxx.

Then simply follow these instructions:

Amp should cost less than $5 in parts. If you can install Tim's N64RGB, making this amp is easier!
