Congrats. Now crank up that difficulty and give it another go: on those settings you'll hafta learn to use the other weapons more. ;) But seriously, glad you like the game, it's one of my personal favorites. :)

Nope, I can't remember what my first 1cc was-it may very well have been GG Aleste on a Game Gear emulator! Thanks for the congrats, everyone!

@BulletMagnet: The only weapon that I really hate in this game is the charge laser; things just move way too fast in Super Aleste for it to be very usefull. But I will have to try bumping up the difficulty, and using some different weapons! :D

Nice job! Super Alesta is the same as Robo Alesta segacd US correct? Such a sweet game. Question: How much did you have to use the special attack where you fling the two orb things? I can't ever decide if I'm waisting my time when I do that attack.

It's obviously not the ideal weapon in all areas, but it's got a lot of benefits: not only is it powerful, but both the charged shots themselves and the "charge bubble" at the nose of your ship can cancel certain bullets, and it can also go right through walls and rows of enemies. Also, you can use the R button to switch it to "quick charge" mode, wherein the power shot is charged quicker, but you don't fire any more little bullets in the meantime. For the record, the only weapon in the game which I (almost) never use myself is the Missile.

I've yet to snag the cart at my local flea market. I rentd this a while back as a kid; last year I played the ROM and it didn't do justice.

But yeah, SA/SM is freakin' awesome. And it's quite long, too.

Although Super Alesta called Alesta, it actually play and use powerup system like Zanac. Certainly a great game. :o

Congrat dave4shmups. :D Are you using the standard SFC pad?

I'm actually using the ASCII pad-but without any of the extra functions turned on. I had a spare one, which is a good thing, because the guy on gametz.com from whom I got the SNES sent me a mint system, but a filthy controller-the start button doesn't even work! :?

I think I've come pretty close to 1cc'ing Silpheed 2 and PSP Star Soldier, but I have no idea how many stages either one of those shmups has.

Space Megaforce/Super Aleste is actually supposed to be the sequel to Blazing Lasers/Gunhed. I got Super Aleste off of Ebay for $19.99 Buy-It-Now, which is great, since I've seen Space Megaforce go for more then that! Yakumo, the Retro Core guy, advised me to get Super Aleste, because he claims that it has a stage, and extra modes, that Space Megaforce doesn't.

Space Megafore = USA-version of Super Aleste


EDIT: BTW, some stuff is missing from the US and PAL versions of this game, so purists should go with the Japanese version.

How are you playing the Super Fami cart, Dave? Are you using a converter or did ya mod your SNES?

Neither, it actually came modded! :D So I guess I shouldn't gripe about the lousy SNES controller the guy sent with it.

So, how many stages do PSP Star Soldier and PS2 Silpheed 2 have?

I just love Compile shmups; they just seem to have an addictive quality that no others can match; at least for me.

FYI - a modded SNES (US Version anyway) just requires a pair of pliers. Any pair will do. The only lockout is a physical one - there are two slot-grooves on US SNES carts that match small thin plastic tabs inside the cart slot. The Japanes carts have no slots so they hit the pastic tabs and will not insert into the cart slot fully.

Just push down (with your fingers) the dust cover where you would normally insert the cart and you'll see the two plastic tabs at the bottom - just break those off and a Japanese cart will now slide easily into the US SNES and play perfectly. Modification requires no screws to be undone and is completed in less than 30 seconds. Other than consoles which require no modifications to play Japanese carts (i.e. GBA), this is the simplest mod anyone can do.

I traded Dragon Quest VIII, with the collector's ed. box and the official strategy guide, for the modded SNES-I mentioned on gametz.com that I was interested in a modded SNES, so it came modded. :D

Nothing "integral" to the best of my knowledge...while most notably the story was all but eliminated in the US version, as far as I've seen the actual gameplay, etc. is pretty much identical. I tried a ROM of the JP version some time back (I've owned the US version for awhile), and aside from the different ending, a couple of changed music tracks, and a few other minor things, it was pretty much the same as Space Megaforce as far as I could tell. The "core" game was pretty much unchanged.

I remember my first SFC cart. I used a hot-knife to cut the slots into the back of the cart. In the process I mangled the parts the screws go into and the cart fell apart so I held it together with a rubberband :)

I later used wire cutters and pliers to yank those little tabs out of my SNES.

If you don't want to do anything to your SNES or the cartridge I believe most Game Genie's will fit a SFC cartridge just fine. There are also adaptors you can get for not so much that serve the same purpose.

What music tracks were changed? Was the order of them just changed or does the US version have some radically different tracks in it like Bio-Metal?

The Game Genie I have needed tabs removed before I could use it as a makeshift SFC "converter". Although I eventually just removed them from my SNES as well.

AFAIK the only change was a removal of one track, which has a bit ripped off from Blue Monday.

The soundtrack changes were pretty minor; as was said, I think maybe one or two tracks in the JP version aren't in the US version, and the stage music order is shuffled a little bit. Sort of a silly set of changes, imo, but nothing game-breaking. Nothing like BioMetal, hee hee.

I'm personally convinced that the music in stage 3 was changed in Western versions, as the melody in the Japanese game is exactly the same as "The Perfect Kiss" by New Order.

Just my theory, of course, but the melody is exactly the same, no doubt about that.

Jeez, I hadn't listened to it that far in. Direct rips from both Blue Monday and The Perfect Kiss. (The piano-like bit at the beginning kind of reminds me of Vanishing Point, actually, though it's not a cut'n'paste.)
