You may be thinking of "surfaced vaporware". True vaporware never coalesces into a real product (and therefore just wastes everybody's time and resources).
Companies like SCE Japan Studio may have the resources to fund a 9 year development cycle ("The Last Guardian") but small companies like MOSS don't.

At this point it isn't clear whether Raiden V 's planned release for 2015 was a realistic target for the product or a hard "deadline" after which point the business runs into serious trouble if development isn't completed (i.e. a 2015 release was always wishful thinking).

Why not? Xbox absolutely sucks in Japan, it's been in development forever so it's probably bleeding money.

Relax everyone. It's not dead until we have official word from MOSS. We still have the October 4 event in Osaka, and 2015 isn't over yet. Also, someone posted a few pages back about hearing from an ex-MOSS employee that the camera for stage 1 was being finalized when he left the company. Some progress is being made, although I don't know how true the tvtropes page is by saying the game is being delayed. If anything, we can expect a 2016 release if it's delayed. I'm seeing this through to the bitter end, I'm not giving up just yet.

People outside of Japan still buy games and I'd imagine the cost of development is being funded entirely by MS Japan anyway.

Unless it's 100% bankrolled by MS I could see it being cancelled or going multiplat with PS4. MS need to *pay for all of this* to be worth it due to the paltry 50k install base.

It sure does and I'll bet it will. Just watch and an arcade edition will probably show up on NesicaXLive. Raiden IV got an arcade rerelease based on the Xbox 360 version. Something seems off about a Raiden title being one platform only.

I don't think a lack of timely expo announcements and communication from a developer has ever guaranteed a product to be vaporware. We'll just have to see. One question would be whether the stage 1 camera angle is an early development decision or a late development decision. If it's an early decision that's not the best news.

Those pictures are just mock ups aren't they? Not even real screenshots or at the very least interlude screens between levels.

I find it really weird people are citing the low sales of hardware in Japan as a problem. Look at the sales of commercial shmups on 360 and PS3 they are all in the 30k(ish) range. If any of these games get a digital release in the USA and Europe as well then they'll arguably sell more anyway.

We need to support these projects as we don't have the luxury of many releases in this genre any more.

The thing is, even Xbox 360 sales, bad as they were in Japan, eclipsed current Xbox One sales. For shmups on Xbox One to have a chance at selling what 360 shmups generally did in Japan, it would require damn near a 1:1 attach rate, which even as bad as One sales are, isn't really realistic.

Unfortunately not. It seems this event wasn't even live streamed like the Tokyo one was. I couldn't find any articles covering it either. It seems like it was just a rehash of the same stuff that was shown in Tokyo.
