Shmup Soundtracks -- Good ones and where to get them.

Post by Blade »

Lately I've been noting the scarecity of shooter OSTs and the ones I've got are few and far between. Also I keep asking this question over and over verbatim, but nobody seems to answer it.

When is ESPGaluda II OST coming out? Among other things.

I've wanted to check to see if they released any OSTs for Homura which has a really nice one.

I currently have the OSTs to:
Ikaruga
Radiant Silvergun
Thunderforce IV
Gradius V (sorta ^^)
ESPGaluda
Dodonpachi: Dai Ou Jou
Zero Wing
Arrowflash

I'd also like to find complete titles like the stuff from Eternal Shrine Maiden series by Zun.

Either downloads or places to purchase, makes no difference to me, I just want to get them.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Considering the fact that the Ibara OST hasn't even been released yet and that game came out long before ESPGaluda II, you still have quite a wait ahead of you.

www.cocoebiz.com are a good place to buy OSTs on-line. Also, on Ebay, check out Champs-des-Pins, he often carries harder to source OSTs for little more than base-price.

Linking to downloadable OSTs (when the OST is a commercialy released one) is a no-no, so it does make a difference. ;)
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

SM (Song-May), from Hong Kong, has technically every Console VG soundtrack on earth. I bought loads of them, even weird ones like OST from Nightstalkers, or Seiken Densetsu (Game Boy OST!) or remixes from this or that videogame.
Unfortunately I am looking for Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius and Thunderforce V (the ending sequence music is excellent) and they don't seem to have it... yet. But they have Parodius Da! and Sexy Parodius in stock so ...
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Psyvariar 2's Soundtrack is amazing, and I'm not even a fan of techno music.

Try giving the track "Eta" a listen to see what I mean.

Yay, you just discovered america! :D
No, seriously, as far as I know it, the first SM CDs I bought were in Japan, in 1995, at an HMV outlet. It was there where I knew of SM existence. Then, coming back home, I found them in regular shops here as well.
I already knew that they sold alternative prints of japanese CDs, but if they're widely sold through official means (HMV above all), I think there's something (probably in the chinese export laws, I don't know) that make them legal in a way.
Anyway, just for the heck of it, most of the soundtracks I own are japanese.

Play asia is probably the second best place IMO to buy OSTs/albums. They stock a lot of pony canyon albums that other places don't have. If you like the darius series they have the soundtrack to gaiden, II, and a box with the soundtracks to, darius, darius II, darius gaiden, and Gdarius.

I myself would like to get the OSTs to Layer Section, Layer Section II/Raystorm & Ray Crisis. All are fantastic IMO, especially LS II/Raystorm. I have the Saturn versions of LS & LS II and I know that all you have to do is put the game in a CD player and it'll playback the soundtrack (same goes for every other shmup released on the Saturn, I think), but I'd much rather have the original OST prints.

Anyone know if all three OSTs exist? I've never seen them for sale/on auction anywhere.

EDIT:
The interview DVD that comes with it is incredibly creepy, a must see! :)

Hey thanks man. But $93.90? Damn, that's a real steep price. At least I know it exists now. :) Right on for the link.

You're talking about Technosoft Game Music Collection No. 06: Sanctuary. This is a compilation of the Arranged tracks taken from the Saturn version, extended playback length as well, plus a few remixes of Thunderforce 3 and 4 tracks. You'd be very hard pressed to find that one nowadays, and they hardly pop up on auction sites, YAJ included.

And if they did, they go for quite a large sum. You're better off just using the Saturn disc instead, at least that has the Original and Arranged on it ^_-

Speaking of hard-to-find stuff, Cocoebiz had one copy of Arcade Game Sound Collection 6: Soukyugurentai in a few weeks back. I didn't notice it on their lists until it was too late, though. I'd love to get my hands on that ;_;

Not if the game was an S-TV port (Radiant Silvergun, Cotton Boomerang Soukyuugurentai, etc), as those produce the music internally.

I don't know how much Coco was selling it for, but it was probably as overpriced as all her OOP CD's usually are (not necessarily her fault). They pop up semi-regularly on YJA. One on there now for 8800 yen, and it won't sell (unless someone is super-desperate). Complete in really good nick usually reaches 6000 yen though. I picked one up recently for roughly that sale price.

Another recommendation for Champ-des-Pins. I just got the Blazing Star and MM/GW2 soundtracks through, had to stop myself from getting some of the others they have available too.

Espgaluda's soundtrack as always been a favorite of mine. Others would be eXceed & Phantasm both are made by the same team and the music is exellent. Angeraze 2 as some pretty kick ass tracks also... ohh and Samidare, just pure awesomeness!

Apidya has my favourite shmup soundtrack ever. In fact, I just ordered the arranged version today. Chris Huelsbeck is the single best game music composer ever.

The pseudo-Amiga soundtracks of Iridion 2 and Nanostray are nice, too. I'd love to get my hands on the Iridion 3D/II soundtrack CD, but it's apparently rather difficult to find these days.

I also like the more oddball stuff like the wonderful slower-paced orchestral soundtrack of Radiant Silvergun, and Zuntata's um, weird, music for the Darius and Ray series.

Shinji Hosoe's tunes for Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber, Galaxian^3 and Under Defeat are pretty good in my book !

Hyakutaro Tsukumo's Thunder Force V OST rocks my world quite nicely too.

Grid Seeker is another nice melodical shmup soundtrack.

For the nearly obligatory mention for Yack, there is Metal Black, Border Down and Senko No Ronde that I really, really enjoy.

From Karu, Gekirindan is a sure winner.

From Konami Kukeiha Club, Salamander 2 and Xexex are the ones I personally prefer.

I happen to have some really odd music tastes, so I enjoy Koji Hayama and Taku Iwasaki's stuff in the Cho Aniki Series. (Straight face here, folks)

For Cave & Raizing.... it's all good :D Lookin' foward ALOT to Ibara.

Back in ZTT Land, OGR's Darius and Galactic Storm are also worthy to me, as are Tamayo's Ray STs.

One shmup ST that likely isin't well known, but very awesome is Tobi D+vine from Super Sweep. Great melodies there too !

Anyways, I think I've given enough reccomendations. Most are obvious anyways :p

As far as I'm aware, no. It is indeed a wonderful soundtrack. T'would be awesome if Raizing would reprint their OSTs (aside Battle Garegga).

Yack obviously didn't do the music for the Ray games. ;)
