And Super Bomberman 2? If so, have you ever been able to pull off the cheat for the extra battle stages? I tried it with an Ascii pad and it didn't work.

I never heard about the extra stages until now and gave it a go on a regular controller. You just keep mashing X at the title screen until you hear a jingle.

Got a golden flame power up in one of them, which I don't recall having seen before in battle mode but it's been at least 10 years since I played it!

Which region is your copy? I have ntsc uc and I can't get it to work with a turbo or by just mashing.

PAL, unmodified. You have to mash the button for several seconds.
