Cave considers crowdfunding; Potential for ports/new games!!

Post by Doctor Butler »

http://www.siliconera.com/2015/10/01/ca ... -consoles/
A recent post on Cave’s Facebook page asks fans “if we set a crowd funding, will it be good?” Whoever is in charge of the Facebook account then proposes the following model saying that “Personally it’s attractive”:

$0.3M to 0.5M: porting a title to Steam
$1M: porting it to Steam and PS4
$3M: new STG title to a console

There’s no guarantees of this happening but given the positive response Cave has received already, well, you never know.
Sweet mother of God....

I doubt they'd even hit $50,000.

$3 mil for new stg from cave? I'm in. With all the goofy shit cave has sold over the years, i can only imagine what the reward tiers will look like.

Those numbers seem ludicrously optimistic... maybe if they were cut by 50% or 75% it would be more realistic.

They should do crowdfunding instead for an SH3 based Cave home Jamma system. Tons of games would already be ported. Make the funding where you pay for the whole system as a minimal payment, then higher options for prepaying for the first x game(s).

They would sell maybe 100 if even that. not justifiable.

Depends on how much you charge, and also you don't have to guess on how many you would sell/have to make. If the goal isn't reached it doesn't get made is my understanding of these sort of things and nobody loses money. So set the minimum kickstarter goal to where it's profitable.

Come on back to reality dude, that will never happen in a million years (although if it did I would def buy one).

I won't buy any steam games (never have and never will pay for digital games). But if they did some ps4 releases I would seriously consider buying that system and I haven't bought a console new since the PS2 back in 2000.

All a kickstarter would "cost" is a few hours of crunching numbers and a couple of days for a marketing employee, that seems realistic to me. There's no risk, that's why they are talking about using it.

It's the real cost of what it'd take to make a game.

It is a sad world we live in that the Ouya can net $8.5 million and a realistic but hard goal for one of these to bring in would be $300-600k. The one or two millionaires that are fans might drop a few g's if the tiers were worth it.

"They'd only get $50k" is a little pessimistic. There's this whole entire other country that's invisible to us due to the language barrier. They could raise twice that much if they were lucky!

Except the Japanese don't really do crowd-funding. Maybe the couple die-hard fans would, but it's not enough.

The thing about Bloodstained and MN.9 is that they already had a great deal of funding and a publisher prior to beginning the kickstarter. They weren't funding the game purely through the kickstarter money.

The one thing everyone who ran a successful kickstarter seems to agree on, is that it takes a ton of work before and during the campaign. "A couple days for a marketing employee" is how you do a failed kickstarter. As with most ventures, you do need to take a risk in order to have a realistic chance of success.

For the love of God and your real hardcore XXX fanbase CAVE. A single SH3 home and jamma multi-system. :P
Based on a single SH3 motherboard w/ a SSD Hard Drive for game specific data loads, perhaps having to erase/paste new particular game data on the actual SH3 every time a different title gets played.
But still release the xbox 360 ports to Steam for steady stream of cash.

It's a good job I don't drink coffee as it would have been firmly spat out all over my laptop at reading a 3 million stretch goal for a new shmup via kickstarter.

Is it Zimbabwe dollars?

Nah no hard drive just bios and have a different flash rom cart for each game. In fact they could do a new cart for modes like the Pork and Sweets combo game, that's a cart. If you are talking internal hard drive for cheap game downloads then it definitely wouldn't be profitable. I'm talking hundreds of dollars per game kit and no multigame stuff. There's going to have to be money to be made or we can definitely forget it.

Fixed.

On topic, as I said on the other thread neither Cave nor the genre at large have enough popular appeal to succeed at Kickstarter; I don't foresee success if they attempt this route.

A shmup getting three million via crowdfunding is absurdly hilarious. As much as I like CAVE, they are not Shenmue or Bloodstained legion of fanboy hype juggernaughts.
