Bypassing CRT-TV speakers
Hi!
My Sony Trinitron CRT have broken speakers, or so I believe. They always produce static noise and some frequencies it can't seem to handle, at least when I play
Goof Troop on SNES with stereo sound (you can choose stereo/mono in game). In mono though they work a lot better but they still seem to give a lower volume than
they should. I tried to use the headphone jack on the front but it gives me the same result, so maybe not the speakers but a thing in between that sends the audio
signals to the speakers/headphone jack?
I don't know much about this stuff, my guess is that I want to take the audio from my SNES scart cable and hook it up to external speakers, but I would probably
need to buy another RGB scart with breakout cables for sound to get that to work and some speakers, and that's money I'd rather not spend.
Well, any help to fix this is appreciated. I have only noticed the faulty sound on Goof Troop on SNES so far and I recorded a couple of files show the difference between
stereo and mono.

I don't see a cheaper option than the one mentioned.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Yeah agreed with neorichie
I could probably sell you my scart rca breakout adapter, made by retro_console_accessories on ebay (you probably can't do any better than this one)
I don't use it since I got a Syncstrike, wich has rca audio breakouts as well

Re: Bypassing CRT-TV speakers
If you're sure it's caused by the TV and not by anything else (have you tried another TV?) then yes, save for replacing the whole TV, separating your video and audio playback is your remaining choice.
However, scart adapters like this are cheap and cables are not too expensive either.
In fact, if you have the space, I highly recommend going with separate speakers + amplifier either way, as it sounds better and will provide you with a flexible setup that has the potential to last for years.
There are great deals to be had on the used market as pre-HDMI era AV Receivers are sold way cheap. Speaker cable is also cheap (ignore the fancy stuff).
I spent probably less than $100 for my first cheap stereo setup (AVR + bookshelfs)
Which IS a fair chunk of change, I admit. Espcially if you're not interested in unnecessary purchases at the moment. But I'd like to say it's so worth it.
Edit:
In fact, you could probably find an old stereo system or computer speakers even cheaper than that which would do the job nicely!

Just keep your eye on craigslist and get some nice bookshelf speakers and a receiver on the cheap. Goodwill also has these all the time.
The sound on these old consoles is just as impressive as the visuals, I'll never get why people ignore that side of the equation.

Re: Bypassing CRT-TV speakers
My Trinitron TV does that too, it's because of the flimsy scart input which must have either a half-broken pin or solder point.
Kind of a pain to control-and-fix.

I guess that even the adapters would be either JP-21 or Euroscart? I live in Sweden so I don't think I could use the adapters from that guy. Thanks anyway.FinalBaton wrote:Yeah agreed with neorichie

Yeah I have another CRT which does not have the same problem from what I can remember, and I've recently tested it on my HDTV where it works perfectly, so I'm sure it's the Trinitron. Thanks forJi-L87 wrote:If you're sure it's caused by the TV and not by anything else (have you tried another TV?) then yes, save for replacing the whole TV, separating your video and audio playback is your remaining choice.

providing that link though, I didn't know those adapters existed and I only need one of them so it will save me a TON of money. Feared I had to buy new cables for my SNES and Gamecube.
I found an old AV receiver and an old amplifier here at home (already halfway to success!). I also found 2 speakers, but on one of them it says impedance 6, and on the other 4...16, so obviously the
speakers are not the same, not even of the same brand, but could they work together as a temporary solution? On both the amplifier and the receiver it says 8 where the speaker inputs are, is it possible
to plug in the speakers and not killing any of the things?
Yeah I will keep looking, shouldn't be too hard to find something that's good for a reasonable price.BazookaBen wrote:Just keep your eye on craigslist and get some nice bookshelf speakers and a receiver on the cheap. Goodwill also has these all the time.

That sucks. I live in Sweden and there aren't many places to look for these things, so when I found one I was really excited. The picture looks great though, so it could be worse, AND it's not too big (21") soXyga wrote:My Trinitron TV does that too, it's because of the flimsy scart input which must have either a half-broken pin or solder point.

I don't have to break my back when moving it ^^. Kinda perfect actually, aside from the broken audio.

Euro SCART. Isn't that what you're using for your consoles?BBQJohan wrote: I guess that even the adapters would be either JP-21 or Euroscart? I live in Sweden so I don't think I could use the adapters from that guy. Thanks anyway.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but have you checked if your TV has audio out?
My old Sony Trinitron has audio out, you can hook a home theater, mini system or anything else with RCA jack.

The quality of those outputs isn't always the best though. One of my Sony TV's had pretty nasty clipping from the audio out, so I ended up hooking all my consoles up directly to the receiver.Ripthorn wrote:Maybe this is a dumb question, but have you checked if your TV has audio out?

Oh, I seem to have made a mistake. I looked at some of the stuff he was selling and could only see JP-21 stuff, that and that he shipped from the U.S. made me think thatFinalBaton wrote:Euro SCART. he didn't sell anything with euro scart, I just didn't look hard enough. In that case, yeah I'm interested in your adapter. Is it like one Ji-L87 posted?
Yeah it was the first thing I checked, and no such luck =/Ripthorn wrote:Maybe this is a dumb question, but have you checked if your TV has audio out?
