I recommend Harmful Park (PS1), Progear (Arcade), and Blazing Star (Neo-Geo/Arcade).
EDIT, after reading following post: Almost forgot, try Bike Banditz (PC) as well.

i like defender 2 actually. older than crocodiles themselves and plainer looking than A4. but its speedy and classic. only on NES was it??? i think i had that on my spectrum back in the day...
and yeah i came across gleylancer, quite good, but just a bit too ugly, and a cut below those in my collection thus far i would say . (though defender 2 slips through)
at the moment im leading towards :
darius gaiden (RARE on ps1)
or salamander pack (ps1)

Atari 2600 had Defender 2 under the "Stargate" title. The NES rev was quite good (as was the 2600). The Midway pack for the XBOX has Defender 2.tizerist wrote:i like defender 2 actually. older than crocodiles themselves and plainer looking than A4. but its speedy and classic. only on NES was it??? i think i had that on my spectrum back in the day...
As to the original question... Gradius Gaiden - the best Gradius, IMO (though I, II and V are excellent too).

The roms that work with Neo Rage (superior, from what I've seen) seem to differ from the ones that work in MAME, you sure you got the right ones? You need NG BIOS aswell, but you probably knew that.tizerist wrote:well that was a waste of time innit.
long story short- lots of memory and it didnt work anyway

just go with mame, absolutely painless, and there IS a version that will work for you.
and blazing star is incredible and worth any trouble you may experience obtaining it. my favorite ship is the blue one woth the energy burst charge shot (forgot name). i just love headbutting everything in the face, there is nothing better than a game that makes you feel like a badass (unless its one that kicks your ass at the same time
).
aside: its interesting, less than a year ago i was bitching about how difficult mame was to use. today, i just got the latest command line version and am itching to get home and see if my speeds are any better in brave blade, g-darius, and guardian force. ^_^ i am emulation whore (my worst enemy).

We're better able to help you if you define what exactly it was that didn't worktizerist wrote:long story short- lots of memory and it didnt work anyway
Superiorly ancient and unsupported, superiorly crappy sound, superior need for hacked ROMs to support newer games... basically it's superior if you're still trying to play KoF'98 on your 200MHz Pentium. Or if Nebula/Kawaks/MAME32 are somehow too difficult to comprehend and use.zinger wrote:The roms that work with Neo Rage (superior, from what I've seen)

Go figure. The roms i tried in MAME awhile ago barely worked at all, distorted graphics and whatnot. I'll check out Kawaks then.nZero wrote:Superiorly ancient and unsupported, superiorly crappy sound, superior need for hacked ROMs to support newer games... basically it's superior if you're still trying to play KoF'98 on your 200MHz Pentium. I like Mame most of all emus too.
Here are some other good horizontal ones, although I think most of them where already reccomended.
Gradius I
R-Type I & II
Parodius (series)
Cotton
Gynoug
Pulstar
Blazing Star
Last Resort
Area 88 / U.N. Squadron
Axelay (like Salamander, a mix between horizontal & vertical shmup)

MAWS to the rescue!
A list of all games under the "shooter" genre (you can narrow down the search using the "category" search for Shooter/Flying-Vertical or Shooter/Flying-Horizontal etc) with horizontally oriented monitors:
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/srch.php? ... entation=1
Initiate your own search by going to the main page:
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/
Click "delux search" and go crazy.
The whole point of MAME is to document arcade games. Sites like MAWS serve as more than just a MAME catalogue, but essentially an arcade game catalogue (think KLOV, but with more info), and are great for people wanting to track down a particular type of game. Within the information parts of each game are a list of console ports that the game made it to as well as similar games of the same style. Very helpful!

NeoRage (specifically NeoRageX for XP) works great, but it hasn't been officially supported for some time... Emulation is quite accurate, and compatibility is high. Most people who have issues with it just don't have the right versions, or configure them correctly. XP versions aren't official by the way.zinger wrote:Go figure.
