Help Me identify this shmup!!

Post by pingfreud »

I played this shmup at a student union six years ago, and it is killing me not knowing what it was. Help me name it!

Here is a description:

Vertical scrolling shooter, 2-player
"Alternate History" theme with WWII stuff but futuristic
SPECIAL FEATURE: if two players were playing, when they flew near one another "lighting" would flow between the two ships and increase the weapon power and fire rate of both players.
Other than that, it was fairly generic, scroll and shoot stuff.

I've been through the complete catalog of MAME'd shmups, and haven't found it yet. Any guesses?

The "2 players combining" feature sounds like Dogyuun...some of the other stuff sounds different though.

The WWII/future thing is throwing me off. Sounds familiar though.

Curious to see what this one is...?

Wow, replies already. No, Dogyuun isn't it; this one is more recent (1995-1997?) and doesn't have that eight-bit look.

I'm not totally sure about WWII/scifi theme; I may be confusing this with Aero Fighters III. The two ships gaining power from each other is the key feature I'm trying to identify.

Both ships gaining their power from each other when close to each other? If you're referring to the weapons they have being able to combine themselves to create one powerful weapon, then it could be one of the Raiden games. Maybe Raiden 2?

almost certainly not this but Trigon is the only other shooter I can think of that has a join between the 2 ships.

I think it's Raiden Fighters 2 as well.

Wasn't there a Nintendo shmup with blimps that did that? I can't remember the name of the game, but I think it had a WWII theme to it.

id say it sounds like raiden fighters 2 aswell..

might be STG strike gunner, it has 2players joining and some lightning like special weapons.

might be battle garegga aswell, theres a "chain" like options formation between 2 players (tho i doubt thats it)...

Steel Empire? Not Nintendo (Genny), but I don't remember any other WWII blimp shooters on the NES.

In battle garegga with two players you can have the slave ships in between the two ships right?

Or was that just a rumor?

No, it wasn't that one..,

Let me describe it more precisely. When there were two players playing, and the two ships were near one another (within a few dozen pixels, really close) lighting-like effects would zap between the two and suddenly their rate of fire would basically double. If the two ships moved apart, this would stop happening. That's the key feature of the shmup I am trying to identify. Good detective work so far, thanks for all the input!

I'm gonna say Raiden Fighters II again. Is the lightning type weapon purple in color? If so, then you've found it.
