32X Question
So I have a non-TMSS Genesis 1, and I want a 32X to fix the rainbow banding. I'm wondering, though: if I use a 32X, will the high-quality model 1 sound be replaced by inferior genesis 2 era sound?

The sound chip in the 32X is only used for add sound. It doesn't emulate the YM2612.

Bingo. It'll just take the FM and PSG audio from the Genesis and mix it in with the PCM audio from the 32x. Patch cable takes that from the Genesis into the 32x, A/V or SCART cable from the 32x carries ti all to your display or capture device.
