Re: Zenohell - The final stretch.

Post by Kaiser »

I suppose it's time to post an important status update, so now, we are registered Steam developers, quite good timing too, the game's about to reach the content lock mode (aka everything including bonus features done), everything's been under heavy stress testing, everyone in the team's been working hard on completing the product, we are pretty much about to be there.

So what does the near future hold, well... we simply will wrap up the content, continue stress testing for bugs and at the same time, prepare things for releases on intended distributions, actually we are in process of preparations but I can say that they will take a bit.

Emuser's been streaming a beta build of this game lately, here's a recent stream, http://www.twitch.tv/emuser/v/14997543, if you don't mind some spoilers and taking a peek at the actual near-final product that the trailer will not show you, go ahead ;)

Soon, it should be done and out, no exact date from me though ;)

It's happening! It is truly happening! Zenohell is gonna be out soon!

Yep the game is deemed ready for release by Valve, however we are still doing final testing (which is going really well by the way thanks to our lovely bunch of testers) and the final wrap ups. Short to say, the game is COMING OUT on October 15! The launch price will be revealed on release, soon, you will all experience Zenohell ;)

Great news! To be honest, among the recent flood of releases and announcements, I am most excited about this one.

I know that GOG didn't appreciate the game, but are you targeting any other venue for the release?
Itch.io is one certain option, I got some plans further than that but I cannot disclose them at this point of time, in short yes there's other venues that could happen if things work out.

Re: Zenohell - It's went Gold!

Post by Kaiser »

Zenohell has hit "Gold" status, here's why:

- It is 100% content complete.
- It has passed the final quality control and testing, over 20 people tested this thing in total over past 30 days.
- It received the final mixing from emphatic which made a huge positive difference in terms of sound quality.
- It's ready for the upcoming release.

So we are just 11 days from the grand day that is the release, our entire team's excited about it! We spent lots of our personal free time on this, some of us risked trouble to help it happen, but in the end, the end product is worth it.

So awesome, I'm super happy for you guys. I'll buy it for sure once I have some money (and will attempt to spread the word as best I can to friends).

Be sure to share all the details on sales with us. It'll really help the development community to let us know just what amount of interest there is for new indie/doujin shmups on steam. Could be pretty insightful for the status of the genre as a whole.

Just saw the trailer, looks real nice. Are you going to put some filter options in there like scanlines?

Scan lines (both horizontal and vertical are already present, and unlike GMOSSE they are appropriately drawn according to screen size. No HLSL bullshit though, that chews on performance and it feels like every indie throws it in just for the sake of it.

Just as a reminder, Zenohell is about to be released on steam I believe in a few hours. Here's a boss rush video for some extra footage the day before release:

Cool! It will probably be a couple days before I can pick it up; what are the Kai and Zor modes? (And can anyone talk about the secret mode?)

Kai mode's hard mode but not in the purest sense of the hard mode, it's way faster but bosses have less health, that's how the game used to be early in the development, it's sort of developer's mode. ZOR is a different beast completely, it's also faster but the game mechanics change (suck in medals by releasing the shot button, stage restart on continue) along with few extras thrown in.

The secret mode you unlock by beating the game in any way, Emuser has already revealed it, it's the boss rush mode, it's inspired by Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou PS2's Death label but it's not as ridicoulous. Have fun!

Aye, I've only spent about half an hour with it so far, but the music makes a particularly strong impression - the first couple of stage themes have been stuck in my head all morning. I like that the soundtrack opens on an almost mournful note, too, rather than with a traditionally upbeat first-stage piece.

The gameplay harkens to a very precise era, slightly pre-bullet-hell. Can see myself spending a lot more time with this. :)

Your game isn't showing up on itch.io's new release filters for some reason--the link works and it appears if I search for it by name, but it doesn't seem to appear if you're casually browsing the recently released category, even with the shooter tag.

I tweeted itch.io about it hopefully they respond, it is weird, I made the game public as in viewable by everyone so it should show up there. Thanks for letting me know.

Also BIL, that post made my day hahaha

I've been looking forward to Zenohell and bought the Steam version this morning. Now I've spent a couple of hours with it, here are my initial impressions:

  • The super fast enemy attacks are a real breath of fresh air – very different from the slow, overlapping bullet curtains that most indie/doujin shmups go for.

Emphatic did a great job with the music, really suits the speed and energy of the game's pacing. The only thing I don't like about the audio is the laser sound effect for the blue DRX-L ship, it's a little too high-pitched and I found it annoying after a while.

Rock solid performance and responsive controls, with graphics that remind me of a good salad: crisp, chunky and colourful. I think some of the backgrounds could do with more variety, but that's largely down to personal preference.

So far the only real issue I have with the game is that my KAI and ZOR Mode scores save to the Normal Mode scoreboard – hopefully this can be fixed in an update.

Thanks for spotting that, not sure how we missed this through testing - we'll have that fixed momentarily. Blue laser fix might be a bit later.

Patch #1 has been deployed addressing both issues, it may take a bit before everyone gets it automatically (it's gradual, not at once), that's how Steam patching works. So if you get a 3MB patch, this is it.
