Audio Mixing on Sega CD games possible?

Post by MrOldSchoolCool »

Perhaps audio mixing isn't the right term, but on a Sega 16 article it says you can turn down the sound of weapons firing in Lords of Thunder (which would really help as the weapons firing sounds are horrible). If true, this would make the Sega CD version my favorite as the sound of collecting gems in the Turbo version is super annoying as well. Would audio mixing be possible in the Turbo version as well?

This is the exact quote:

"No, that’s not distorted music in the Sega CD file, that’s the fire weapon firing! On the model one Genesis, you can turn this sound down without affecting the music or voices, thankfully. If you have a a model two Genesis, you’re screwed."

You use a 3,5mm male-male cable that goes from the headphone output on the Mega Drive and to the 3,5mm input on the Mega CD. Turn the volume on the Mega Drive down to zero and use the RCA output on your Mega CD. This way the sound created by the Mega Drive are filtered out. Works with Road Avenger for example.

Are you sure you run the cable from one headphone jack to another headphone jack?

Also, I'm using a scart cable that produces stereo audio and so sound comes from that. Am I still able to do it?

Yes, I'm sure since I've done it myself.

You can use a 3,5mm to RCA lead for your SCART cable.

Okay, but I'm still a bit confused on what to do. Could you explain it step by step again, taking into account the scart cable? Sorry if I'm making you repeat things. I appreciate the help.

If you use a lead that converts RCA male to 3,5mm female, you can use it with a SCART lead made for the Mega Drive that utilizes the headphone jack for stereo sound.

Okay, so this is what confuses me. The Sega/Mega Cd doesn't have a headphone input... it's a headphone OUTPUT is it not? This makes the whole setup not make sense to me.

It's labelled "MIXING" -- it's an input to mix the audio output of the Sega Genesis with the Sega CD.

I got it to work. It's very cool that you can do this.

Now I just need to figure out if the price of Lords of Thunder is worth it with this setup. I would be eternally grateful to anybody who could upload a youtube video of the game running with audio mixing and the Genesis volume turned halfway down (to reduce the sound of the shooting sound effects) in order to see what it would be like.

I never thought about this. The loud sound effects are the thing I dislike most about Lords of Thunder. Usually I just put the game in my CD player and skip to track 7 :) The game is alright, it's just far too easy, even on Super Hard. The music is incredible, and well worth a listen.

A shame that the sound quality from the Mega Drive's headphone socket is lousy and noisy, not to mention that it looks really bad if you leave a cable connected in the front of the system.

But I think I might try this next time I give that game another go :)

Almost all revisions of the model 1 (excet VA7) offer amazing sound from the headphone socket.

As for the cable looking bad on the front, it's not too bad if you have an angled cable end and pass it under the console (and it won't be strained by the weight of the console, since the console have little rubber feets, leaving a bit of space between it and the surface it stands on)

Not sure if you read my earlier message but could you PLEASE upload a video of that play through for me? I'm really curious to see how it plays that way. The game is expensive and it would really help me with my purchasing decision.

The headphone jack actually uses a car amp, strangely enough.

0.3W sounds a bit low for a car amplifier :P

Burn a copy of it to try before you buy?

That's a good idea but I looked up how to burn Sega CD games and it looked to be a bit of a hassle. You have to convert audio files and such? Is that right? Also, I don't entirely trust that a burned copy will be 100% accurate, thus defeating the purpose. I'm not trying to be lazy but it would be much easier for somebody to just film a minute of gameplay who already has the game.

Just get the images from a verified set and not some random website. ;)
