Damn, yikes. I've lugged many a box to the post office. I think I did a couple around 20k. Probably a user here was the recipient of it. Most ridiculous package definitely went to a user here that pops up every now and again.

I'd be all over this if it wasn't US only

Maybe something for our US based LD aficionados...
I hardly see people mentioning Nuku Nuku (I assume that is an OVA box set - TV and Dash wasn't very good) - a quite enjoyable show.

I see the Nuku Nuku laserdiscs quite a lot in my travels. Yuzo Takada's illustrations always stand out when scrolling down a page.
Can't say I know much about it though. Catgirls tend to scare me.

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Oh man!
Those Berserk covers are great. Interesting with all the close-ups as covers usually are more like the other 2, trying to depict all/most characters and then some.
The Madox cover is of course fantastic, except the faces which look odd, but it's a really cool picture. I always gaze for few minutes when I bring that one out.
The opening to Maddox is always great fun to watch (mecha pr0n) but the choice of extra material is interesting because it's footage from the JDSF going on and about. Still cool none the less.
And call me tonight is....fitting. I guess. I guess I'm sad not to see the delinquent with the enormous hairdo on the front as I rather liked her design but meh. I actually re-watched it yesterday and well...it is so delighfully 80s.
Edit: spelling

Wow, this reminds me of growing up in the late 80s/early 90s - lots of great anime.
I got into LDs due to being a massive fan of Horror Films. LDs were this other-world technology when I was a kid.
Some of my favourites are horror films that I really like and watch at least once a year.
I am and have been searching for a copy of Halloween 3 Japanese Laserdisc. If any of you have it, want to swap it or otherwise know where a copy is please let me know.

Oh wow! Another awesome haul. Call Me Tonight is one of my favorites. And goddamn, the detail on that Madox one is splendid.
Was Call Me Tonight hard to find? Never even thought about looking that one up. Only seeing a few VHS tapes and an overpriced art book on eBay.

Yeah, I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it wasn't 60 bucks or best offer, which in this case means 55 bucks probably. Let me know if any of you folks ever see it for cheaper, and of course don't want it yourself.

Its unfortunate no artbox exists for the Berserk set. Typically they'd release shows in singles (as pictured above) initially, and then several years later milk the consumer again with a boxed collection. Guess the format was at the end of its life-cycle around the turn of the century so they decided not to bother.
Yahoo Japan Auctions and Rakuten would be good places to keep an eye on too.
I’ve seen the Call Me Tonight artbook several times on Japanese auction sites – though none are up now/ or have been recently. If you can obtain the books ISBN it may yield some search results for current listings around the internets. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for you anyway.drauch wrote:Yeah, I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it wasn't 60 bucks or best offer, which in this case means 55 bucks probably. hit up the LaserDisc Database site, you could ask some of the users there if they would be willing to initiate a deal.MintyTheCat wrote: I am and have been searching for a copy of Halloween 3 Japanese Laserdisc. Re: The LaserDisc thread
Just bumping this here thread to say that I finally have got the LaserDisc player integrated in my current living room setup.
It's not a perfect solution but it works and well, it took me what? - almost half a year since I moved to do this....
Because my player hasn't been hooked up, I haven't gone and bought anything either, and I'm thinking I'll probably be focusing mostly on blu-ray in the future.
But if I see something cool coming my way I might pick that up. There are still some things I'd like to get on LD, some OVAs, game-footage, music videos and other assorted weird releases and stuff...

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Nice to see another collector of obsolete medium!
I`ve been re-collecting all my old anime collection and various other 1980`s anime pieces I admired for their art or key animation.. and the odd italian horror movie as and when I find them cheap..
Luckily living in Japan, I rarely pay more than a few hundred yen for any of my discs unless it`s a big boxset or rare item..
here`s a few of my pickups.. will post a few of the full set another time.
The absoluetely insanely huge Gatchaman series 1 box set
(also have series2)

somewhat rare Bavistock LD

Original uncut trilogy box set ($5!!) and a small segment of my full anime collection in the background..

Some of my Italian horror movie collection, got these in the hope a buddy who`s a bandmember of
Goblin, who wrote the soundtracks will come back to JP and I can get em signed..

My treasured Kaname pro laserdiscs..I love Yoshinori Kanada`s animation..
Windaria and Birth are still sealed!

Another of my favourite eighties studios and directors.. Madhouse and Yoshiaki Kawajiri!

Another sealed disc.. Angel`s egg.. lovely eighties styled cover..

Wings of honneamise box set, worth it for the full unedited soundtrack disc alone.

that Windaria cover illustration is considerably more interesting than the one I have. Did not even know that one existed as a matter of fact.

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Nice to see the uncut star wars set in here. Sadly it still isn't the originals as they ran at the movies. I heard they are sped up slightly to fit on one side. Might explain why the first movie always feels slow to me. First saw it on laserdisc.
Re: The LaserDisc thread
well, you got 18 sides for the trilogy on the CAV boxset. As far as I can tell there's just missing a few secs on one of the side breaks - other than that the boxset is "original".I heard they are sped up slightly to fit on one side.

Leda's not super cheap in Japan, it usually goes for 1600-1800Y.
Where are you guys sourcing your discs from? I am after a copy of Battle Royal High School, but its a pricey item here..

Re: The LaserDisc thread
single disc collection so far : Draganar box 1 is currently being watched.. rotten discs for dumping up at top right.

box sets (gasaraki boxes were a freebie from the producer if the initial D game I was working on)

more box sets (nadia box was free!)

even more box sets

Am willing to trade / source items!

Re: The LaserDisc thread
As a graphics person I adore this studio's work - it's SUPER eighties, but features lovely, super snappy and dynamic key animation and character work by one of the legends of Japanese animation, the late Yoshinori Kanada.. This guy practically defined the rules for action animation, Gurrenn Lagann, Kill La Kill and many other shows have a very strong kanada influence..Ji-L87 wrote:Fantastic stuff!

I think BIRTH is a must see.. It's more a showcase than a film, it's a pretty nonsensical 80 minute chase, but I just love the style. It's also one of Hideaki Anno's first jobs as an animator, and also featres a very 80's synth score by Joe Hisaishi.
Windaria and Leda are nice too if you like things a bit more whimsical, although Windaria gets darkly tragic as it goes on. , both feature character designs by Mutsumi Inomata who now almost exclusively works for Namco.

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Was the anime series "Special Armored Battalion Dorvack" ever released on LD format? I do recall a complete 36 episode set on DVD format was released sometime back. It still hasn't got a proper USA release to this day. The Dorvack plastic model kits manufactured by Gunze Sangyo were cool for their time by employing the usage of mini wheat light bulbs to internally illuminate weaponry on the Powered Armor mecha suits of lore (for an extra sense of realism/coolness factor) -- all this back in 1984.

Re: The LaserDisc thread
Remnants of my LD collection. I got Shoji Kawamori to sign this back in 98 at a con in DC.

The 1st Silent Mobius movie CAV box set. It's hard to get a pic to do the gold etched cover justice. I have a cell from the movie I keep in the box.

I got this on release for my birthday.

This was my 1st item off of ebay ever.

Life Force, this was on the tail end of my LD purchases.

Last but not least, my Ys 2 LDs. I had a time tracking these down back in the day. I had to call Anime dealers by phone one by one. I'm amazed I was able to find the 3 I did. No internet kids.... well just barely.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Re: The LaserDisc thread
I usuall see the occasional LD player dumped in a side alley next to the local electrical store.. they probably still work.
The Japanese prices for a lot of reissued 80s anime is WAY too high, Birth on DVD goes for like $80 here, and some stuff like the Macross movie is actually cut on bluray, LD discs are so cheap out here with the exception of a few titles, it works out cheaper than renting and torrents of 80s stuff dry up pretty fast online..
If anyone knows where I can get hold of a set of salamander LDs let me know, would be willing to trade..
