Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
Hey guys, i'm new to the forum, but i hope to be a long time member. I've been lurking for a while
I just got a BVM-D20F1U, and i'm hoping to ask other owners some questions. I flipped through the manual and got through the learning curve. Man was it worth it!
I'm still confused about a couple of things:
So i've been using my SNES with an RGB SCART to BNC cable, and the signal only looks right in 16:9. I adjusted the H Phase and H/V Sizes accordingly, and it looks great, but in 4:3, the colors glitch out for some reason. does the SNES not output 4:3 natively?
Does the D20F1U support 31khz signals? I was thinking of using it with my X68000. I could just use a T connector for the H and V sync right?
I may have more questions later but that's all i can think of for the moment. I'd appreciate any input from you guys.

Re: Sony BVM 20F1U Question
That's weird. The SNES outputs at a 4:3 ratio. Not sure why 16:9 would show up fine and 4:3 messed up.
And that model BVM you have can only do 15khz. You might be able to get a device like a super emotia and use that for your x6800. Or you could also just get a nice pc crt monitor.

Re: Sony BVM 20F1U & X68000 Question
Alright, so i'm using a T-connector to join the H and V sync signals together. I'm getting an image, but the colors are distorted in a strange way. They bleed a bit and leak to the left side. Also, there is a strange purple curve in the image that i forgot to take a picture of.
The color problem is seen in this image. It looks much worse in person:

Do you guys think it could be a sync issue? The monitor will only accept 31khz if it's in 16:9 right?
Could i use this circuit?

It accepts 480p, which can be 4:3.famiac wrote:The monitor will only accept 31khz if it's in 16:9 right?
Not sure what the X68000 31KHz video modes are outputting, though; that might be the problem.

The X68000 puts out some strange signals. A proper sync combiner might not help.

But why the color issue then?

Re: Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
Some games work, some games have the colour problems. The colour problems are likely caused by the picky BVM's choking on the often very strange sync signal output from the X68000. This sync signal varies from game to game.
So, even if it looks wrong in the prompt, try actually booting a 15/31khz capable game and observe the results, it might work better.
At the end of the day a BVM/X68000 marriage is not a match made in heaven. I know that there were some 20" monitors released for the X68000, which would have been the ideal display for that machine. Though I think those 20" monitors were dual sync only, so no 24khz support.
For full compatibility you would need the right official 15" X68000 monitor model. Or perhaps some other trisync Japanese pasocom monitor. No substitute.

I use a 29'' arcade tri-sync in a wooden box now. Works perfectly with every game. Far nicer picture then my OG montior which was slowly dieing and rather washed out looking.kamiboy wrote:Some games work, some games have the colour problems. Re: Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
Really? The XRGB-2 and older scan converters from Micomsoft have an X68000 monitor output, so I thought 24KHz compatibility was included.kamiboy wrote:I know that there were some 20" monitors released for the X68000, which would have been the ideal display for that machine. The FMT/X68k monitors I had were about 14" and maybe 17" each, no bigger, but I only got one of each.
Edit: Only three X68k series monitors don't support 24KHz, according to GameSX, and they're all 14" models.

Okay then. It seems those 20" X68000 monitors are the way to go, if you can find one that is. You need pretty good luck to pull that off.
As for the OG monitor that was dying. It was most likely just the capacitors that were dying. If replaced the monitor would have performed just as well.

Re: Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
FWIW, neither of my 14" monitors survived the trip from Japan. If any could, you'd expect the small ones to.
Not recommended for importers at all, unless you can get a very very good freight service.
That's just in addition to them being very old and looking, imo, very nasty in terms of cabinet design and materials. Cheap monitors with very little good to say about them, I felt, ignoring the display qualities which I obviously didn't get to test.

Re: Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
My BVM-20F1 survived the shipping from Japan with no flaws whatsoever.
Also had two 14" models shipped to me from Austria and Germany. No issues there either. Guess I've been lucky.

Re: Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
My 14" arrived without issues from Japan, and I personally feel the X68000 monitors are handsome pieces of kit. Much sleeker looking than any old 14" BVM.

Re: Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
While a cap change would probably improve it. I have not the time nor work area to do such a project on something as complicated as a monitor. And the 29'' monitor was quite a nice upgrade over the old ''14 as well.
For people living outside of Japan, I really think it's not worth risking importing such an old display, when anyone should be able to source a decent arcade monitor in their homeland for far less.

Re: Sony BVM D20F1U & X68000 Question
I can understand those sentiments. I am not looking forward to when it comes time to recap my X68000 monitor, and I would love to have a 29" trisync arcade monitor, but only if it comes packaged inside a nice candy cab.
