Looking For A System To Collect...

Post by alexkidd401 »

Just moved to Seattle from the East coast. Left most of my collection at my parent's house. I only brought with me a PS4, 3DS and Ouya with me now. I swore to myself that I would stay digital but I still have an itch to collect physical media. Any suggestions? Preferably a disc-based system since I can easily emulate a majority of cartridge games with the Ouya. I'm into shmups, beat'em ups, RPGs and fighting games if that helps. Let me know what you guys are thinking. Thanks!

GBA SP (the original, frontlit version) - durable, usable in sunlight, region-free, two-gen backwards compatible, loose carts, flat-packed boxes and manuals don't hog the room, you'll take it where you won't take Ouya with you.
If you keep a CRT with compoment or RGB input - jailbroken PS2 (slim with external PSU).

Buy a PS2, then collect PS1 and PS2 games, lots of great titles in all the genres you mentioned.

You should collect for whatever you want.

A modded PS2. You'll have tons of great stuff to play on the PS2, and PS1. There's some great JP shmups on both systems.

Saturn is great, for shmups, but the PS2 is just more of an all around winner. And the PSX shmup library is WAY underrated.

I'd throw down for a Saturn collection if I were you. I'm thankful that I didn't have kids during the PS1/Saturn/DC/PS2/N64 days b/c they would have starved with the quantity of incredibly import games that were landing in my mailbox.

Personally I'd be grabbing a saturn and most of the shmuos.

If you're into rpgs the ps1/ps2 route has more than endless amount of games in that genre.

The PSX has a lot of great shmups too.

And the PS2 has some great ones as well (not as numerous though).

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

That's a good question.

I'm not sure if the TC is interested in a system, for shmups, or for other games. Otherwise, I would link him to Bullet Magnets' articles.

Whoa, I just learned about The Sword of Etheria/OZ - sounds like totally my kind of game. That's PS2 for ya - never saying "stop". Played some OutRun 2 SP yesterday and some Burnout 2 again on mine tonight as well. Don't you be without one, ya hear?

That being said, when it comes to collecting physical media, nothing beats PC games. If I can't even find a no-CD crack for some old-time computer game, in like 99% cases legit disk can be found cheap easily. Since it's cheap, no matter how huge my backlog of PC games is, I can't feel too guilty about expanding it even more. On top of that, the less I pay for a game, the more likely I am to enjoy it (your mileage may vary). You wanna pay much - I guess importing doujinshi is the way to go.
