Wouldn't it be cool to play Tate arcade shmup with MS look?
After playing the PSX version of "In The Hunt"...I was wondering: wouldn't it be cool to play a Tate arcade shmup title with the beautiful hand-drawn sprite-based graphics of Metal Slug?
I realize that such an arcade Tate presented title hasn't been done after all these years...you'd would've have thought a respected Japanese arcade game developer would've done something like this in the mid-1990's.
Suppose if Nazca team (hypothetically speaking, if they were still in existence today) or another arcade game developer had developed a true Tate oriented arcade shmup game for the Japanese arcades but with the cool trademarked Metal Slug-like foreground & background artwork (that is truly interactive if the player shoots at it, it takes damage & upon recieving heavy damage, is entirely destroyed in the process) for some really crazy shmup action. ^_~
Do you think such a hypothetically proposed arcade Tate shmup PCB with Metal Slug type of graphics would do well in the current arcades today?

Are you talking about a vertical shmup, or a vertical run and gun like Commando?
See the thing with run and guns is that you can stop and enjoy the scenery, you cannot do that in a shmup. The animations would likely distract you. However, if it could be done I would like to see it.

Re: Wouldn't it be cool to play Tate arcade shmup with MS lo
There is very few shmups have animiated style graphic like MS. Beside "In the Hunt", I think the later Twinbee come close to this style. Some Dojin shumps got this style.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:After playing the PSX version of "In The Hunt"...I was wondering: wouldn't it be cool to play a Tate arcade shmup title with the beautiful hand-drawn sprite-based graphics of Metal Slug?
It actually hard to use this style in shmups, since to be have a well animitated character, the spite size have to be large and using large sprite for player ship and enemy make the screen very crowed and narrow. Not good for Tate style quick reflax shmup games.
May be Game Paridise and Twinkle Star Sprites come close to this style.

ITH and MS series have quite slow gameplay. I would think if you used that style in a vert it probably wouldn't have too many fans.
I'm not a game designer, i'm sure a good game designer could find a balance.
If Progear was a vert, would it come into this category? I've never played it.

Try out Progear No Arashi on Mame32 emulation...
Yes, I'd have to say that Capcom's very last CPS2 arcade title of "Progear No Arashi" would meet the critera of being a MS-type of shmup (lots of cool hand-drawn sprites for the foreground & background scenery) if such a vertical screen oriented version was produced.neorichieb1971 wrote:ITH and MS series have quite slow gameplay. And why not give Progear No Arashi a try using Mame32 emulation program? It really is a fun but hard shmup. ^_~

With all the new hardware hitting the market, I'm very disappointed that we aren't seeing more 640x480 or better 2D/hand-drawn games appearing. It seems as if the only games moving to hi-res are 3D ones, which is all good and dandy, but I love my hand-drawn 2D.
The worst offender to date is playmore. Metal Slug 6 is still low-re, despite being on Atomiswave hardware, which is essentially a Dreamcast in a box (and more than capable of handling 640x480).
Games like Guilty Gear and Hakuto no Ken, while not shmups are certainly beautiful to look at. I only wonder what sort of stunning images we could be seeing if the shmup companies went for hi-res in their titles. Obviously low-res is cheaper (lower res images = less memory = fewer ROM chips = cheaper), but still this is the year 2006 not 1986, and CGA is looking very dated as our PC using friends all migrate towards 1600x1200.

I'd say the Gunbird games are pretty close in style. Definitely different and not nearly as gritty, but they have a lot of cartoony detail in an overhead perspective.
About hi-res graphics, I agree it would be nice to see them a bit more often, but low-res sprites have a certain charm to them that you don't really see in the GG series and such. I don't care at all if a game is in low-res, it's just the hi-res/low-res blend that leaves a bad taste in my mouth sometimes.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

On the PocketPC there's a horizontal shooter called Firepower (ironically enough, since the PPC's normal orientation is vertical, you have to rotate it to horizontal to play it) that has a very MS-like style. In fact, I suspect they may have actually ripped graphics from Metal Slug games to make it. Info can be found here.
