Nice write up on Cute 'em Up genre from 1Up.com

From 1Up staffer Jess Regan, a nice 3 page write up on 1up.com which covers the comical shooter genre. Covers everything from the very first Twinbee/Stinger game, Fantasy Zone, Gun Nac, Air Zonk, Parodius to Game Paradise and Twinkle SS to name some:

A few excerpts:
Shooters are the foundation of the video game industry, dating back all the way to the 1960's with Steve Russell's classic Spacewar. Since that time, the genre has been responsible for bringing much depth to the world of interactive entertainment, popularizing vital concepts like the power-up and the end-of-level boss which are still used in many of today's greatest games.

And as grim as ever. Shooters can be fun, but you wouldn't know it from the deadly serious plots and generic sci-fi aesthetics that accompany most games of this variety. Fortunately, not everyone has a serious story to tell with their shoot-em-up, which is where satirical shooters come into play. If you ever grow tired of brave heroes fighting evil alien empires, look no further than this collection of outlandish, offbeat and sometimes just plain bizarre takes on the genre.

That was a nice writeup, but these things do seem to be lacking in editorial constraints at times. Panzer Dragoon Saga is derivative of Starfox? WTF? Yes, I know what the author meant, but it's still annoying.

Yeah, not perfect obviously. But for an article, it's far better content than what you'd get on IGN (many of whom probably have never even heard of Gun Nac)

Thanks for sharing that article, which I rather enjoyed. I even learned a few things.

I bet the author of that article would enjoy Harmful Park and Star Parodier. Maybe also Kyuiin.

Is it possible for someone to cut/paste the whole article here? I tried loading the page on two different computers and it keeps giving me errors...

I hate 1up's tech layout (though content is pretty good).........
