I like the model of limited but unlockable continues. I was pretty stumped that Crimzon Clover WI had removed this feature, since I kind of have my head in my ass and think that's the absolute best way to do it. Unlimited continues from the get-go is just asking for trouble from random reviewers.

If it's exactly the same as the 360 port I don't get the point aside from making it accessible to people who never owned that console.
We will need some exclusive contents to make things appealing, I mean Cave on PC 'better bring some novelty otherwise I can very well see many shmuppers NOT spending a cent on those (except for supporting Cave maybe).

Hooking up my 360 is a pain so I'll buy it for convenience.

on steam it is very easy to catch a game unlike a 360 port that you won't even see in stores or maybe anywhere. On steam it can be advertised on the interface even when you are not looking for it. So we are looking potentially at PC players who aren't necessarily shmuppers seeing a cool looking arcade game of a quality they have never tasted before come up on their screen and maybe click "buy" and we get new people into the genre. (plus yeah the point about convenience and people who just dont have a xbox or tv..)
Even with (non region locked) console ports we know I think this brought quite a lot of people into the community right? So I think this move again should expand it at least a bit. Maybe more. Will see!!

I think conservation is the best point. Japanese 360's are only going to become more expensive and hard to get and I don't trust mine to live forever.

I thought the port of the original Mushi was region locked, or am I trippin? Also as long as it has everything together without having to make extra purchases, I'm in. It'd be too easy for my 360 to break and have me lose Mushi 1.5.

I think this will lead to even more exposure through streams as well. Getting a streaming setup working on a PC game is much easier than hooking it up to a console.

Re: Cave x Steam teaser!
The accessibility cannot be understated either. If you want someone to try out a Cave game, they'll simply be able to buy it on Steam with minimal fuss and play it on their crappy laptop that near everyone owns nowadays. As opposed to needing a 360 (pricey NTSC-J version for the region locked games), having to buy the game from some import shop, and then having to wait however many weeks for it to arrive (XBLA version of DFK excluded, but that one's EU exclusive, right?). Even having to mess around with MAME is an entry barrier, legal aspect of downloading roms aside.
To offer a completely unrelated example of how much this kind of thing matters, the "cult status" and popularity of Planescape: Torment, a game originally released in 1999, have grown considerably since it was made available on GOG in 2010, in no small part contributing to the related Kickstarter in 2013. All it needed was a legal release that could be bought, installed and played easily.

Re: Cave x Steam teaser!
You got a good point. It's right to mention emulation as in a way it's quite close to getting good-enough to do the games justice, it's only a matter of a few years.
So yeah now's the right time to make the Cave games widely accessible as commercial products.

Re: Cave x Steam teaser!
Some kind of short mission mode would be a good thing for new players. You would have short, 30-second challenges that would teach new players certain techniques and offer a way to practice certain bullet patterns. The whole point is to make it different enough so that it doesn't look like a piece-meal version of the normal game.
Once they get good enough to get past stage three, you have them hooked since they now think they're good at the game. It'd be a self-reinforcing loop, since future attempts would get them even further in the game.
Jamestown had the right idea with offering something like this. I think even Cave had something like this with Ketsui. But it needs to be slightly more focused.
Just slap a mission screen, create a few challenges, make sure some kind of message appear in the main menu to encourage players to try the mode... And you've got yourself another shmup aficionado.

I like this idea alot, maybe throw in a boss rush mode to.Squire Grooktook wrote:My ideal is, you have two modes:
Arcade
Training
Arcade has no continues ever.
Training lets you play the game with continues, select stages and scenes, tailor lives/bombs. I think that gets the message across while letting people see the rest of the game or practice if they want.

I know many people want Mushihimesama really hard on PC, but it would not be the best first Cave game for beginners. Imagine a tutorial that says "Hold the rapid shot button while pressing the shot button as fast as possible for this particular enemy, while some enemies require to release the rapid shot button and press the shot button no more than 4-5 times per second".
Re: Cave x Steam teaser!
So don't put that in the tutorial.DestroyTheCore wrote:I know many people want Mushihimesama really hard on PC, but it would not be the best first Cave game for beginners. Mushi doesn't really need a tutorial, does it? It's easy to understand the basics; you have a chain value that goes up as you shoot stuff, and when you're not shooting stuff, it goes down. You don't need to explain this; it's a simple thing that occurs in response to the things you do as a player. A more useful tutorial would be, "looking at the screen will allow you to visually see what is happening."
Yes, there's complexity in optimizing the scoring system, but absolute optimization is never the role of a tutorial.

very few people care about mushihimesama's scoring because it's kinda dumb and incredibly arbitrary

what you're saying is essentially that anyone who is playing mushi original is purposefully or inadvertently playing for score, which kind of negates your complaint imoBananamatic wrote:or they could just play original

EOJ said upon release that tappies were still a part of the scoring, but I don't know enough about it to substantiate that claim with any evidence

Except YGW medal chaining. That's actually fun.

Re: Cave x Steam teaser!
Look, it's going to be Futari. End of story.
That's because:
- Futari is a fan favourite (tops the poll here)
- It allows for later sale of Black Label DLC (which Mushi HD doesn't)
- The scoring system is slightly less annoyingly arbitrary than Mushi HD
- The 'feel' of Futari is slightly more modern as it's newer
- You get 2 characters to play instead of 1.
Search your heart, you know this to be true...
The only question is whether they dub it 'Bug Princess 2'. I have to say it's a more catchy name, and easier to search on Steam.

I would seriously object to the name "Bug princess": it sounds more like a "game" some Chinese bootleggers made for a Famiclone multi-cart.
Plus, there's a growing market on Steam catering to weeaboos, so it might actually help rather than harm sales if the original title is used.
