Buying games is for tryhards. Cool people limit themselves to bitching on fora.

The best "guide for beginners" I've read was Blackbird's blog post here, but its main problem is that, in this case, it's much easier to show, rather than tell. Which is why I agree that a video would be the best format for such a tutorial.
Yeah, I've been meaning to record a "How to Play Shmups" video tutorial for a really long time. It's just hard to find time to do it when I'm preoccupied with more immediate concerns =P.
I didn't really mean that as a "That lazy bum Blackbird should make a video in addition to his exhaustive written guide". In any case, if you need help, I'm willing to contribute what I can. Could even make a thread about it.

I like gifting games to friends as well. Though I only do so when I have extra steambucks and there's nothing else on that I care to buy.

I'm sure your contribution will make a huge difference to their bottom line, I imagine you'll get a letter of thanks.

Or perhaps you should just keep your money and spend it on something that makes sense.
Because supporting a company that you like by purchasing and gifting their games to your friends doesn't make sense.
Sorry, that's my bad. I read it that he was going to buy physical 360 copies to give as gifts, which would have been ridiculous. Apologies, I misunderstood.

Gone so quiet suddenly? I can think of something else to spark another page of quality comebacks if you like.

Personally I'm really happy about Cave games coming to Steam. As I was discussing with CStarflare in London a week or so ago, it would be cool to get these easily accessible via Steam - looks like that conversation was pretty timely! The only reason I'd re-buy a 360 in China would be for Cave games, but this saves a ton of hassle and money.

Only things I want are, as mentioned, a lagless SDOJ (please god) and Mac compatibility. The latter shouldn't be too difficult, please don't do Windows only.

Are you a regular Mac user? Just out of curiosity...Do you use bootcamp a lot or play only Mac-compatible games?

Yeah, I won't go back to Windows. Don't use bootcamp, so for Steam I really appreciate compatibility attempts.

Was going to ask about a SteamOS/Debian version even if it's using a wine-wrapper but changed my mind after trying Oniken on Ubuntu.

I'll gladly play this on my living room windows pc. It seems a bit much to expect to see many Japanese shmup and doujin titles for Linux when we're only recently starting to see localized windows versions.

Someone needs to start selling a Cave arcade stick or wireless shmup gamepad for steam/pc. Lot of keyboard and 360pad warriors out there aren't going to have the best time. I don't even want to think about the steam controller...

^ this, basically. We're talking a super small developer here. And you expect them to do an entire new version of their game including QA because you can't be arsed to take an hour to install windows?

Is there any reason that a 360 stick wouldn't work? I was using mine on PC for a while before I decided to switch over to a PS3 Saturn pad. I don't know if there's any sort of native lag or anything like that... but I don't see why there should be, and I certainly didn't notice any. I don't know much about the ins and outs of PC gaming though, tbh. Just an availability issue for you?

Windows detects 360 sticks as normal xinput controllers. Only problem you can run into is the game not letting you remap directional inputs and defaulting to a dpad. Some sticks apparently let you emulate the dpad or either analog stick, but it doesn't work on Windows for my HRAP VX-SA, so I had to use xpadder to play x.x gameroom games on a sitck, for instance. Stick works out of the box for pretty much every shmup on Steam I've tried though, with the sole exception of Exceed 3rd.

Moot point anyway, as keyboards are perfectly fine shmup controllers. Certainly better than the 360 dpad.

I wouldn't use it for anything except to boot into Steam, and that seems like a real inconvenience and a genuine waste of HD space.

In case anyone hadn't noticed, Apple's corporate steamrollering has become fairly ubiquitous. You may disagree, but I feel the onus is more on developers big and small to support an operating system that has been blitzing the market for the better part of a decade, than the consumer to have to install dual operating systems just to play a handful of games.

Just heard about this. This is awesome news. Will buy all the shmups that are released for steam. It's been a long wait, but this is exciting.

Yes, Blackbird himself confirmed this. Along with Cave on twitter. And Shinmai. And it's been reported in Forbes and various game websites now.

Lol, did you even read the article you linked? That clickbait article is counting smartphones and tablets (which do NOT run OSX) as "Apple computers". If you look at the neat graph in that article you will see Windows PCs dominating 70 million of the quarterly device sales while Apple PCs are about 7 million. And that graph shows that Apple PCs have been selling roughly the same since 2009. Hardly "blitzing the market". On top of that low market share, Apple refuses to put decent graphics hardware in their computers, which is a respectable decision in order to improve battery life and power efficiency, but awful for gaming.

Why should developers cater to a tiny market that is not even concerned with gaming anyways. Just use bootcamp.
handful of games
I think it's way more than a handful, only looking at shmups of course.

Such a jovial place is shmups farm, so many replies start with a lol.

Yes I read the article, yes it's referring to Apple's various operating systems across a variety of tech formats. It's my fault for not reviewing my post, I didn't phrase it properly to differentiate OSX and iOS. But the gist is: they sell a lot of shit, enough that I would expect their formats to be considered by developers.

You think the Mac market is tiny? :|

Lol.

(Oh look, there's another one!)

I probably will install bootcamp if that turns out to be the only way to play. Bit irritating, since inbuilt Mac HDD space isn't the most generous, but I could use some incentive to start moving some stuff to the externals.

OSX market share is small, and I think it's a bit odd to request such a niche market of an already niche market (shooting game players) get a representation from a country that barely considers PCs worth playing games on in the first place.

Sure, a lot of people use Macs. But they run steam from windows. Actually, steam keeps track of how many people use OSX. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey
These are the stats developers look at when deciding what OS to target. 3% doesn't look too good.

That is... surprisingly small in number. I would have guessed it was higher.

Anyway, if there's no support I will install Bootcamp to play some SDOJ.

Sounds promising, fun to see if they will go past the 360 ports for games like Ibara and Esprade?

So yeah, I don't know if anyone has followed, but CAVE suddenly became super social on Facebook, communicating with the Western audience (and it seems like it might be Ikeda himself).

They even admit that the horrific Bug Princess Duel was horrific.

and in case it isn't obvious already, this is only going to be their "1st" title on steam:

Good stuff :D

Hoping for good lo-res-support (as in Ikaruga/Crimzon Clover).

My EII is used for PCBs and PC.
I never really wanted to add support for Xbox360 (there is enough stuff inside already...)

So:
+1 for SDOJ
+1 for Ibara Kuro
