Shmuppers' ideal "Image Songs"...?
For me, it would have to the english vocal version of Anji's Theme (from Guilty Gear X)...
I hide myself
From Class and Wealth
I'm complete cloaked black stealth
I hide myself
From Class and Wealth
House Calls Come in Death Coated Stealth
My People slain
From Lack of Distain
They never feared full destruction of the reign
All Peoples' pain
From Lack of Distain
They're so un-fearing their time is nearing
So many are gone,
Who will never hear this song
It all seems so unreal. It is impossible to feel it.
Saving all we can, we must recue all of man
Far to many are gone that will never ever
Hear all of this song.
Or know what is right or wrong
Hear all of this song.
Or know what is right or wrong
I don't think this is off-topic-- here's a chance to compile a CD or playlist of songs that would describe a shmupper's lifestyle/dilemma/virtue/etc. (Anji's theme is a sort of "swan song", considering he's among the 1% of fullblood Japanese people, according to Guilty Gear history.)
My example, above, states my feelings on the matter of shmups; a dying genre, a dying breed, but god damn it, not only will we go down swinging, we WILL NOT DIE! XD
...and to a less serious extent, we "hide ourselves from class and wealth" by JP-importing ourselves into a financial shithole.
Well, anyone?

From the pit of the shadow
comes my soul, fucking prepared to consume
Ever thirsting for violence,
Spawn again, rising straight out of Hell's womb.
AHHH, fall down upon your knees,
crushed by mere despair!
Come, lay down your head, sweet child,
or fool, fucking fight me if you dare!
In your gods you seek guidance,
forgiveness, salvation, and release.
Fuck that shit, They're not here.
Sick religions will find you no peace.
Rage, destruction and death,
This true Trinity!
Existence is futile,
so give your soul to me! Oh yeah!
Rise up above the darkness, don't lose hope,
and never relinquish the light!
you are the one, with all the power to
endure to the end of the fight.
So raise your head, your heart up to the sky,
and search for the strength from within
to find an end you must first begin!
False illusions of grandeur
bring you nothing but seething, pain,
In my shadow shall you die,
Leave this world to the terror of my reign
AHHH, fall down upon your face,
crushed by mere despair!
Down upon your belly worm,
or rise and fucking fight!

...another GGXX Vocal song. o_O;; of the final battle theme. i think of Hibachi and Final Aki when i hear it. ^.^;
EDIT: also, Even In Death, by Evanescence. the first verse perfectly describes my feelings for the genre.

Rush - Tom Sawyer
A modern-day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Today’s tom sawyer
Mean mean pride.
Though his mind is not for rent,
Don’t put him down as arrogant.
His reserve, a quiet defense,
Riding out the day’s events.
The river
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society.
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift.
The world is, the world is,
Love and life are deep,
Maybe as his eyes are wide.
Today’s tom sawyer,
He gets high on you,
And the space he invades
He gets by on you.
No, his mind is not for rent
To any God or government.
Always hopeful, yet discontent,
He knows changes aren’t permanent,
But change is.
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society.
Catch the witness, catch the wit,
Catch the spirit, catch the spit.
The world is, the world is,
Love and life are deep,
Maybe as his skies are wide.
Exit the warrior,
Today’s tom sawyer,
He gets high on you,
And the energy you trade,
He gets right on to the friction of the day.

There's quite a few Rush songs that would work. "Driven" and "Ceiling Unlimited" come to mind. Others I can think of
"Learning to Fly" (Pink Floyd, the Tom Petty song of the same name might work too)
"Blackbird" (Beatles, off the White Album)
"Don't Stop Me Now" (Queen)
"Cool the Engines" (Boston)
"Space Oddity" (David Bowie)
"Slings and Arrows" (Moody Blues)

When going through one of those "boss-after-boss-after-boss" parts in the Gradius series:
"Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen
In general, Showtaro is good high-octane stuff (think "The Answer" and "Moonlight" from the MMX6 intro).
V6 and MAX are also good.
I think I'll stop here - I could go on for a while!
Going the other direction, shmup music makes great work music. I use Audio Overload to play the ROM music data files (you can find a bunch at ocremix.org)

Not so much about the games themselves, so moved to off-topic.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
