It looks like it's supposed to be their swan song before abandoning console/PC games altogether.

Well, it's not Konami's swan song. It's Kojima Productions'. Konami just got tired of funding video games, and are happy to make pachinko games now. Which is quite depressing.
Cancelling Silent Hills, and then releasing a SH pachinko machine? So cruel.

I hope that Kojima Productions just sets up shop somewhere else, like Clover did, when they became Platinum. Maybe Sony will give them a shot.
I would hope that they stay in tact, rather than being split up. I don't want another Team Ninja/Valhalla thing going on, where it looks like neither can make good games without each the other. Such a waste.

Depends on where you live I guess. Back when the PS2 was new, consoles used to be way more marginal in large parts of the world than they are today. The territory to conquer these days is much larger than it once was.
If Konami's investment in brand new cross-platform engine as well as the game itself exceeds whatever any previous Metal Gear game cost them, I believe they are pushing hard to sell it to more people as well.

Are there even any console exclusives developed without any funding from console brand owners anymore?
Tu put things into perspective, there was a time when Nintendo wouldn't licence any more than 5 of each third party's NES games a year; hence Ultra Software Corporation/Palcom in Konami's case. Can you imagine any games console company getting away with it nowadays?

i'm pretty excited for this but I probably won't buy or play it till sometime next year. I just finished playing metal gear solid for the first time in a decade or so and now I'm playing MGS2. Just 3, 4, peacewalker and ground zeros to go till I can play V!

although actually, I might just skip 4 for now....

Doesn't seem to fare much worse on PS3 than MGS3 did on 2, and that was fine with me. Not that I feel like buying it before I play 4 and Peace Walker.
I guess current-gen versions players should be thankful for cross-gen development (at least I'd choose more frames per second over extra glitz, on consoles anyway). On the other hand, I felt MGS3's presentation was worth the compromised performance...
If V really is v-synced all the time, that sucks, though. 3 on PS2 would tear for a reason.

What's wrong with 2? I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far, the game play is basically just an expanded version of the first game's - except it's not just a boss rush. The little bit of mgs3 I've played felt very different to the first game, which is why I decided to go back and play them through from the start - so I could get a feel for the progression.

The whole rose and raiden thing is a little annoying, but it's nothing I can't look past.

You know, part 2 is really divisive.

For me, if you cut out all the cutscenes and skipped all the codecs, it's a good game. Too bad you have to kind of "fast forward" the codec calls, and can't really skip them.

Anyway, some people think it's really interesting. And it kind of is...but it's awful too. The story is just garbage. And the dialogue between Raiden and his woman....dear god. There is so much text to wade through. And there's some truly face palming stuff, with some of the characters (not going to give anything away). Just idiotic reasons for doing this, or not doing that. It's so badly written.

That wouldn't be the end of the world, but it interrupts you constantly, with codec calls, and has tons of cutscenes.

I play the game, and skip the stuff. But I'll never watch the story again. Dear God, it was horrible.

Part 4 has HUGE cutscenes. 8 and a half hours worth. But they are bunched up at the end and beginning of missions, and in between. So, it's kind of like a stretch. And once you beat the game, you can skip them with ease (thanks to the update, where you don't have to install EVERY time you start a new mission). And the codecs aren't constant. In fact, they are less than the first game.

Part 3 is awesome. And has a very good story. 4 just kind of puts the hurt on you...just because of the length of the movies. But I thought the story was pretty entertaining (other than a few awful parts...but that's par, for the course with Kojima).

I really can't understand how anyone likes the story in 2. I'm OK with SOME of the stuff at the end, due to it's mind-fucking....but overall...wow...it's bad.

The restraint shown in Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes was very refreshing. Also, GZ had some pretty harsh stuff at the end. Yowza.

^ 2 has no story. It's total garbage.

In fact if you got rid of all the useless crap in that game you'd probably have a few hours of decent gaming. But you can't, so it's 70% shambolic mess and it always will be.

And it shouldn't be divisive, that's just people trying to pretend something is good when it's actually trash.

Happens all the time sadly.

4's cutscenes are a joke. Also makes no sense whatsoever.

No idea how Kojima managed to convice the world he had some kind of script writing talent, the guy's shit.

For me, I like Kojima's characters FAR more than his stories. Solid Snake is one of my favorite characters, but he's been in some awful stories.

He was probably the worst character, everything about and surrounding him was terribly scripted and written. MGS4 is an abomination of a story, and barely an MGS game. At least MGS2's badness doesn't make me want to yell.

I liked the game, and enjoyed the story, despite some drop dead terrible parts.

But the length of the cutscenes was....it was so excessive. I've never seen anything like it.

I guess that's why the cutscenes in PW, GZ, and TPP have been toned down so drastically. I think he got his "I wanna direct movies" out of his system, on that one.

We can't be sure of V yet, can we? About Peace Walker, it could have had more to do with the small scrren's diminished cinematic appeal. It's not a coincidence that horror movies like Alien, where the monster is hardly even shown, came in vogue when VHS hit homes and smaller screens challenged the old ways of filmmaking.

I believe certain effects flat out not doing their job on TV screens were of the film producers' uttermost concern when VHS was new. If your big nasty monster looks like a mascot on the TV, it is not scary anymore, which is bad for a film company's reputation and genre's popularity. Look how once-huge genres - western and historical epic - imploded at the nineteen-sixties end. I'm pretty sure the companies, by addressing the new channels of distrtibution, tried to protect SF and horror genres from fossilisation.

Gonna pick up my pc copy after work, I AM EXCITE.

Especially "excited" for the huge steam download, which is what I'm gonna have to do anyway since all there's on the disc's apparently just a steam client installer.

A reliable connection to the internet without data caps is a big not a problem for me, but if it was, I'd probably be pretty pissed.

So why did I buy physical pc version you might ask?
I found it much cheaper than the normal steam version which goes for €59,99 :mrgreen:

Is the PC version Steam exclusive? What would Konami give them such free money for?
I realise digital distribution is the future, but what is stopping Konami-sized companies from establishing their own Steam-like online shops?
