Which of the various 360 Cave shmup ports are the "best?"

Post by vgambit »

Specifically, the best in terms of arcade emulation accuracy. Which ones best match the arcade experience? And does it even matter that much?

unless you're super familiar with the arcade version of a game I'd argue that the accuracy of the port is less important than things like.... the screen sizing options.... extra content... if the game is buggy or runs smooth.... etc

for instance mushi futari has excellent screen sizing and orientation options and a million game modes where as something like guwange has really terrible options for resizing and orienting the screen - you cant even get the game full screen on a 4:3 TATE crt....

to me a low level player this is way more important than if the port has some minor discrepancies from the original arcade version.

though I think the mushi HD port might also be one of the best too (according to some feedback on here I think). that article came out before it released. not sure about any of the newer games.

Wow I hadn't seen this, thanks for sharing! Mushi HD seems to be great but the forced filters leave a sour taste on most people who frequent this forum. I can't comment on SDOJ.

I think people complained about input lag with SDOJ. Could be wrong, I dunno.

Yes, you can.
And it's beautiful. ;)

to answer the OP.... DFK (any of them), SDOJ and the first Mushi are winners imo

I don't know if it's the most arcade accurate or not (I've played both, but not side by side...) but Mushi Futari has the typical M2 love put into it. Lots of screen options, modes, etc. You can reduce the input lag lower than the arcade version I believe. You can even have fake burn in on the monitor if you want.

I put my vote in for M2's port of Mushihimsama Futari (and you get Black Label too as DLC)!

DOJBLEX menus are shit and training mode is useless but there's no issue in game. Except that messed up Shot sound effect which makes it feel way less powerful than in Arcade or PS2 versions. Laser sound is fine though.

Mushihimesama HD

It has every possitive aspect of the Futari port plus
- two Arrange Soundtracks
- and in Practice Mode you can choose to start from Mid-bosses

But Futari (and DS and ESPII) feature the original arcade graphics, while Mushihimesama has only the updated 480p graphics. I totally prefer the low-res arcade graphics and Cave obviously stopped to include these after the first few releases to keep the PCB value up.

Disregard what I said. Only now I noticed "arcade emulation accuracy". :?

but on visual merits I stand by my recommendations

This is pretty much what I was looking for, thanks.

As far as the games mentioned, the only ones I'm missing are Guwange and Mushihimesama 1, neither of which I want very much.

Wasn't Ketsui an excellent port? I seem to recall that being the case...

While a very good port, it's not arcade accurate. The port is noticeably faster.

I've countless hours on the PCB Mushi and Futari, I would say the 360 ports of those two games are pretty damn close to the real thing.

Most accurate - M2's Futari port.
Most fun - Pink Sweets / Muchi Pork double pack. Especially for that pink sweets arrange mode .

To clarify, I assume that you guys are talking about Futari 1.5 and not BL...

DeathSmiles (white label arcade) is pretty damn accurate. Mushi Futari 1.5 slightly less so (Original, Maniac and Ultra all have minor differences to the PCB)... ESPGaluda 2 has loads of inaccuracies, but considering how complex the slowdown is in the game, nobody was expecting them to get it perfect.

Didn't they eventually patch resizing options into Guwange?

Yes they did. Immryr is thinking of it at launch, works fine with patch installed by switching WIDE MODE off (ala Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets which came not that long afterwards). Only outstanding issue I'm immediately aware of is incorrect looping of some music which most failed to notice (I certainly did for a while).

Ahh, speaking of WIDE MODE... could someone please explain to me what this setting does. Specifically, i'm referring to the Wide Mode display setting for DDP Saidaioujou, (ON is default). And, which way should it be set playing on a standard non-tate hdtv 1080i?

The port of Muchi Muchi Pork! is pretty accurate but there are a few differences (some bizarre):

- 360 version is missing some slowdown, most noticeably in the latter sections of stage 4
- The font for points on the screen (like "10000") is smaller and not as "bubbly" in the port
- A specific enemy formation about 2/3 of the way through stage 5 doesn't appear until a short while later in the level (doesn't really affect scoring since you can get it in both versions, but your timing and lard attack management will have to be slightly adjusted)

Yeah. I have played all the ports, except for DeathSmiles II. And SDOJ is the only one where it has this sort of lag. It really ruins the experience.

Sad too, as it came with that "Super Limited Edition". They went through all that trouble, with a fancy edition, but the damn game has lag.

Does it reeeeeeeally have lag?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
