I should probably make it clear that I think the final product that was Downpour was fucking terrible, but I saw potential in it. It was interesting, with lots of weird little out of context unexplained details which I think really adds to horror. And had they not pussied out on the story it would have been pretty decently good too. Make that same game except pitch black dark 95% of the time, with more creative bizarre enemy designs, and dedication to go through with its plot and it would have been quite good. I especially liked the open-world aspect of it and I think SH could do a lot with that concept if you were given more significant reason to explore.

Homecoming is inoffensive imo, but not at all interesting. Same thing with Zero. Downpour strove to be more, it just failed to accomplish it.

4 though I think is an excellent game for what it is, I prefer it to 3 as a work of horror.

This. I'm a huge fan of 1-4. While 3 is undoubtedly awesome in the established Silent Hill formula, i knew how to work the game whereas 4 really creeped me out.

Sigh, it seems an injustice that Resi always outsold SH even in its best days. Though SH fans are notoriously hard to please, the series definitely seems to have a cult following..

What in the hell? Team Silent was such a uniquely talented group of individuals, they could code and draw with their asses and the result would still be more inspired and possess more artistic merit than the conveyor belt checkbox shit like Homecoming. The Room's title screen alone is better than the entirety of Homecoming. Some people, honestly.

Sorry, for me, it was dull, repetitive, and boring. Believe me, I tried to like it, but the breakable weapons mechanic and the headaches (Yes, I know there was a way to prevent it) only made the stale cake that was that game taste even worse. It felt like a giant chore to get from point A to point B to me, as well. Why weren't there any boss fights? Homecoming had them, and their design and patterns at least made sense.

Just because Homecoming was made a by a western developer doesn't make it automatically bad. Yes, it has its weak points, but Japanese teams are capable of making mediocre games as well.

Doesn't surprise nor disappoint me that this fell through. SH ended quite naturally after four games. It was an expensively produced, willfully cultish series, and was never going to continue receiving the funding it needed as its sales declined. Four substantial games with a minimum of outside interference in those circumstances is a good run. SHs was a nice prospect but Konami would fuck up a cup of coffee these days.

I do think it'd be cool if when the dust settles Kojima got a few of the old staff back together for something new. Hiroyuki Owaku, Masahiro Ito, maybe even Keiichiro Toyama? Call it "dis be sum spooky shit muhfucka: the muhfuckening" or something. It's neither here nor there to me though. I'm happy as a clam replaying SH1-4 every couple years and observing the conjecture-fuelled nerdfights that rage amongst the fans.

Homecoming is the most misguided and blatantly patchwork of the outsourcings, and I'd exhume my old laundry list of why SH The Game of The Movie of The Game featuring Hostel didn't work, but for now I'll just say I found it an insult to the memory of Carl Winslow.

I'm excited and there's nothin' nobody can do about it.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Looking forward to picking it up cheap at Xmas for PS3, I rather enjoyed Ground Zeroes and rinsed the shit out of it.
I think I got about 8hrs out of it.

I heard you could clearly read HIDEO KOJIMA before and after each mission. That's a nice way to mock the whole Konami/Kojima argument.

I thought this was the Silent Hill thread...

Seriously though I'm ultra-hype for this. Large scale GZ has the potential to be an all time favorite game for me. I'll be a bit late playing this though, since my copy will have to be shipped to me from the US.

Stupid question, but doesn't the game take place in the 70's? Where did they get tech to make that?

MGS's technology has always been kinda weird. That fantasy/Sci-Fi things are the main charm in the series imo. And afaik, TPP take place in the 80's.

I know, i was joking a bit. Snake Eater had the Shagohod and a 100 year old sniper that can use photosynthesis.

Famitsu scores are pretty meaningless. But then again, so are a lot of others.

But just from playing GZ, I know this will be REALLY good, at the least.

For what it's worth, I read Metal Gear (Solid) shares its universe with Policenauts (Meryl certainly appears in the latter). Never mind both; where's the new Antarctic/Penguin Adventure, Konami/Kojima?

I can't remember hype this wild surrounding a franchise pushing thirty since Street Fighter IV. And you can tell Konami wants to bury Earth underneath it. Grand Theft Auto is a whole decade younger!

MGSV is the first one Konami's targetting all platforms that matter with, and the hype exceeds that of MGS2. Such a title can flop as well as any other (see Driv3r), but never before did I see series this ancient burdened with expectations that huge by pretty much everybody who might care. Konami are trying to make it bigger than PES*) or DDR with this one, as mainstream as GTA or CoD, which had never been the case before. The ambition nothing short of imperial.

*) Wikipedia says PES 2014 came out for the PS2 (A.D. 2013) among other platforms.

The only Final Fantasy developed for PC alongside the console version was XI. Zelda has pretty much always been Nintendo platforms exclusive. No way in hell either took this much effort to find its way to the widest audience possible.
Can you see Zelda or FF fighting against CoD for any turf?

I was just thinking of old series with a massively hyped upcoming release. I don't think MGS5 is going to come anywhere near CoD or GTA in terms of mainstream appeal. It'd have to sell 20-30 million copies to be in that league. The game looks amazing and there is a ton of hype behind it, but I don't think it'll break 10 million. Not even Resident Evil is that big.
