Splatoon!
Re: Splatoon!
There was some datamining going on earlier today .. apparently out of all the maps on the disc already, only 2 have yet to be unlocked. I have a feeling by the middle/end of July, all the on-disc content will have been unlocked.

Unfortunately I've kindof lost interest in playing the game already, though I still plan on playing it more when new modes and weapons are revealed. I've put about 60 hours in so far.

Re: Splatoon!
Already knew that all the future content was on-disc behind time release locks, since several updates have been made without a patch. It's a sleazy scheme to artificially pad out the game's lifespan and maintain player interest over the months, but at least none of it costs anything.

Re: Splatoon!
Is there any chance of them actually making NEW maps? Or are they just going to unlock the ones on the disc, and that's it? I think they should at least make one or two new ones.

It will probably all come down to the big update in August.

If it's free, why does it qualify as a 'sleazy' scheme?Pretas wrote:Already knew that all the future content was on-disc behind time release locks, since several updates have been made without a patch. I don't know if I'd use the word "sleazy", but intentionally worsening the quality of the experience for people who play now in order to be able to shout "LOOK! NEW FEATURES! COME BACK AND PLAY AGAIN!" later isn't exactly a praiseworthy marketing tactic.

It also made it a bit weird for reviewers. They were all like "it's good, but right now it's bare bones". But the stuff was on the disc already.
Weird. You'd think Nintendo would have clued them in.
At least it's not DLC, that you have to unlock off the disc. That would be a real pisser.

Anyone tried the pro-controller with a Wii motion plus strapped to it trick? (For player 2 local battle with motion aiming)
Re: Splatoon!
What Nintendo's doing with Splatoon is not at all unlike the time-release character unlocks that were placed in the arcade versions of certain Capcom and Namco fighting games, only it's less forgivable when you're paying for the entire game and not just single credits.

Re: Splatoon!
tbh, I don't really mind a lack of content.
A good multiplayer experience is like a good shmup. It should be infinitely replayable on its own. Extra content is nice, but it doesn't need it.
When I play a multiplayer game, I'm playing it to have some fun with friends. I'm not playing it to unlock accessories or raise my level in some sort of meaningless online skinners box ranking system.
I don't plan on playing this a ton, but I've really enjoyed what time I've spent with it.

Re: Splatoon!
So the big August update launched, and now it feels like a complete game. Or at least it will be once they reveal another game mode or two. You can play with your friends in groups of 2,3 or 4 .. and also set up private, custom lobbies with any set of rules or teams. Also, buckets and miniguns. Yay.

Re: Splatoon!
Oh really? I'm gonna have to download this. I've been busy playing Metal Wolf Chaos, and haven't been splatting as much as I should.
EDIT: Was this just on the disc too? I just started the game, and it didn't download anything.
I see where it's 1.03 now though.
I was actually hoping they would add something that wasn't already on the disc.

Re: Splatoon!
Try starting the game again, Wii U's updating can be quite finicky. It's a big 300-600 MB patch that updates the game to 2.0.
Re: Splatoon!
I got the update, but for some reason, the auto update didn't kick in and I had to wait a few minutes (longer than the time listed) for it to download. Splatfest started at midnight and is going on now. Hot Dogs vs Marshmallows.
The update added private friend rooms and a neat bucket weapon (the splosher), as well as tweaking some of the levels. I'm not sure what to make of the splatling gun. It's a charge weapon, but fires more like one of the rapid fire weapons. It gives out a powerful rapid fire blast with good range, but I seemed to cover more ground with a weapon like the N'Zap '89.

Re: Splatoon!
Splatling is really a defensive weapon. You aren't going to be playing TF 2 heavy with this thing.

Everybody seems salty about Ika Musume collab gear not being "very good". Maybe they thought it would be like the USJ Star Knight gear in MH4U.

Suffer for your fashion.
Re: Splatoon!
Maybe, but the charge seems to put it at a disadvantage compared to other weapons and the rate of fire doesn't seem to make up for the extra charging time.Udderdude wrote:Splatling is really a defensive weapon. You aren't going to be playing TF 2 heavy with this thing.

Re: Splatoon!
I feel that the splatling gun is much closer to a charger than people think: in my experience it's a more action oriented charger weapon.
Thing is its range is extremely large, so ideally you should be firing from a high vantage point to either mow down enemies as they head towards you, or to cover allies as they engage enemies a fair distance away from you.
In that sense I would agree that it's a very defensive weapon.

Re: Splatoon!
I stand by my opinion on the splatling gun. There are non-charger weapons with good range that are just as effective without having to charge. Not to mention that there are charger weapons that kill in one hit, which doesn't seem to be the case with the splatling gun.
Splatfest is over. I haven't gotten back to the game yet, but I heard Marshmallows won due to popularity, but Hot Dogs (my choice) got more wins. I chose Hot Dogs since Marshmallows are sticky. Both are fun to roast, though.
edit: I just played the game tonight after I first posted this message. Those shells you get for playing splatfest (even if you lose) sure come in handy.

Some of the unreleased splatling variations look scary as fuck. Disruptors and bubble? You'll definitely be able to do some offensive damage with that. https://nwplayer123.github.io/Splatoon/Upcoming/

Re: Splatoon!
Splatfest is on again this Saturday; this time it's Transformers themed surprisingly enough.
Autobots vs. Decepticons of course. I know nothing about transformers, but since Marie is supporting the Decepticons, it is my duty to do the same.
I actually tried ranked mode for the first time since new modes were added to it, and ended up playing Rainmaker for awhile. As it turns out I'm really good at it!
I'll have to try out tower control once that rolls around in the selection...

Re: Splatoon!
Rainmaker is way too "Blink and you lose" for me. Not a lot of back and forth going on. And it's even more kill-frenzy-tastic than Tower Control, which is already pretty ridiculous.
