Best way to record PC shmups lossless and lagless?

Post by Synnae »

Recording lossless/lagless from emulators is easy if you use the emulator's built in .avi recorder. But since PC games can't really do this, it gets difficult to record them properly.

I've tried some screen recorders (Fraps, Dxtory, etc) but they all work laggy on my computer. Some less demanding games don't lag for the most part, but sometimes they still hiccup/lag spike randomly and it ruins the flow of the video.

I also tried OBS. It doesn't lag on my computer, but it's not lossless. I read there are some settings to make it record lossless and I tried them, but the videos are still lossy. (Maybe I'm not doing things right?)

Then there's that .kkapture. It does exactly what I want: records lossless/lagless. But the only problem is that the audio gets completely bugged/out of sync/messed up. It hurts my ears. (Is there a way to fix this?)

Anyway, that's it. I'm not having much luck with the stuff I tried so far. I'd like hear some recommendations from you guys. Help?

I used D3DGear for this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icQCUur6M24

I think it's fantastic, though I was using 'fast' settings/codec so it isn't lossless, but see for yourself.

Also for some reason d3dgear stuff fucks up when I try to edit in through Sony Vegas. I've got around this problem by rendering it in VirtualDub first. It fixes the artifacts/glitches/ whatever they're called but then vegas' preview runs slowly. It is workable, however.
My blood pressure is rising just thinking about it..

I've had the best results with MSI Afterburner + VFW Lagarith. When I record at standard frame it's pretty much flawless, it does seem unstable only when I increase the recording resolution to like 720p.

Best setup I've found for lossless is Dxtory using UtVideo codec (faster than lagarith for most things I've tried, maybe it'll make dxtory work for you). I managed to record some more system intensive shmups like Astebreed on a mediocre laptop with that codec so it seems pretty good. Dxtory sometimes has compatibility issues with older games and gamemaker stuff though.

If you can pay to get some equipment, I highly recommend a Micomsoft XCapture-1 USB since it has a built-in HDMI passthrough so you can record your gameplay. Another good one is the SC512N1 since it's the PCI-e version of the xcapture-1 with lower latency. Lastly, if you're still looking for something cheap/free OBS is decent at recording as well as DXtory.

I have no experience at all with equipment. But I could buy them if they're not extremely expensive. I have a few questions:

1) Do they also lag or lag spike/hiccup randomly like Fraps, Dxtory or the likes? Because if they're no different than a regular screen recording program, then I'm better off not spending money on them.

2) Can I actually record any PC game that runs from an .exe? Best thing would be recording the game on windowed mode, but only the inner window. (Without the borders)

3) In what format they save the videos? Is it .avi, .mp4... or something else?

Windows 10 now has some recording software built-in, but it requires a newer GPU (newer than 2010, at least). Haven't tested it with any shmups - of course overall software compatibility is quite low so that's likely to be a bigger stumbling block. I'm also not sure if it is offered unless you're in a newer program. All the same, it's an option to keep in mind.

To get the most out of software like FRAPS it's good to have a secondary hard drive to record to. A multicore CPU is important too, but everybody has one now so I don't imagine that'd be a big stumbling block unless recording at very high resolutions or in a very CPU-intensive game.

For what it's worth I found Fraps either outdated or just plain bad. Huge file sizes, inferior quality to D3D gear and in some cases it simply doesn't work at all.
I'm not ruling out the possibility that i've done something wrong. It was a while back when I was testing it, I'm on win7 and can't remember if I turned aero desktop off or not, or whether that'd make a difference.
Also I'm using an AMD card. My old PC had nvidia and winXP and that seemed to record fine, but it was years ago.

Dxtory seems like it might be better.

I actually did OK with FRAPS a while back for recording some full-screen footage out of Chrome, which I was later able to compress into a more reasonable file size later. I did that on Win 7.

1) The device itself will not lag, but depending on your PC/Laptop sepcs, video software, and encoders you're using video capturing performance may vary. If your PC is at least Core 2 Duo Quad core and have a decent reading/writing speeds on your HDD, you won't find that much hiccups in recording.

2)Yup, the purpose of the video capture hardware is to record anything video output that's coming out of a device's video out. That means you don't need to worry about adjusting video resolution and you can record full screen gameplay.

3)Depends on what video capture software you're using. The devices I mentioned typically are associated with AmeRecTV, which typically outputs AVI formatted videos

Where can I buy the device? I'm searching for it but I can't find it anywhere. Probably I'm not looking right.

is this the one? o______O It's way more expensive than I thought. I don't have that much money to buy it.

It seems like my computer could handle it though. But it barely hit the minimum requirements. XD

Thank you for informing me about it anyway. But I'm better off sticking to DxTory or something...
