So if they weren't even receptive to that, then it's hard to think of anything they could be interested in seeing on the big stage.
SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility

Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
Just watched the Ikaruga TAS live. Worst choice for an STG exhibition ever. Everybody was bored.
Why the hell would you want to watch a TAS, but not watch a superplayer?! Weird GDQ dudes.

It instantly reminded me of Hattori at Stunfest doing double play, and how much seeing that live in person was much better than this.
I have enjoyed SGDQ a lot though.

Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
that was pretty far from a superplay m8
Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
You're pretty far from knowing what a superplayer is m8.
Surprising considering how much time you've spent in the community.

He's right though. Superplayers are like multiple WR holder tier, not highest score on shmups forum.

He's a million times wrong and so are you.dannnnn wrote:He's right though. Superplayers are like multiple WR holder tier, not highest score on shmups forum.
Just count how many "multiple WR holders" are doing speedruns at the event. Maybe 1-2 people out of 100. And then think about all the completely irrelevant WR times for games that have no competition at all. Even the most competitive speedgames like SM64 and OOT haven't even been remotely maxed out compared to most of the shmup WR scores. Stuff like DDP 740mill or Garegga 20,5mill are on the same level as sub 1:40 SM64, which will yet take several years to achieve.
If you put it this way, the GDQ speedrun events are full of amateurs. The speedrun community truly is still in the fledgling stages.
The only speedrun game that is easily comparable to shmups is Goldeneye 64. These dudes are heavy.
Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
That's why I said "tier", i.e. a calibre of player good enough to achieve such a feat. Not that they literally have to have multiple WRs to qualify, but that's the level they're on.
There are quite a few good/very good scoreplayers on here, but if you label every good player a "superplayer" then it loses its distinction.

A superplayer is somebody who plays in the upper echelon of their respective game. Simple as that.
Saying that we don't have superplayers when we even have world record holders is beyond stupidity.
Edit:
A superplayer does NOT have to be a multiple WR holder. Where did you ever get that stupid idea?
People like NAK, Kamui and SPS aren't superplayers in your eyes?
dudewtf

Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
This is complete semantics, but as I recall, the definition of superplay is "playing the game at or near the highest level the game can be played at"
ie you don't have to be a WR holder. Just as long as your at a really high level of play that's close to the games skill ceiling. That could still potentially be an eon away from a WR or a max score.
I'd say there are quite a few super players around here, by that definition.

Look, it's not like the word has a literal definition, it's just a phrase used to describe a certain calibre of player. You think there are currently Western players who meet this standard, I don't. We'll have to agree to disagree.dannnnn wrote:That's why I said "tier", i.e. a calibre of player good enough to achieve such a feat. This is exactly the level of player I do consider a superplayer btw, and both Kamui and SPS have held multiple WRs in Garegga and Ketsui respectively.Eaglet wrote:People like NAK, Kamui and SPS aren't superplayers in your eyes?

It kind of amuses me how Touhou fumos are frequently seen during these events, but no one actually runs the Touhou games. I think it has potential.

What's even the point of having that word if you put it through so much inflation? Calling people here "superplayers" is generally just embarrassing for everyone involved.Squire Grooktook wrote:I'd say there are quite a few super players around here, by that definition.

Good question.Erppo wrote:What's even the point of having that word
Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
It isn't inflation at all though.
The western community is working from a different framework and foundation than what the japanese community is and just as their best players are "superplayers", ours are as well.
Acknowledgement should be given where it is due. Superplayer is the given word for excellence. If you want to change that for the western community it's just semantics.

I don't think it's embarrassing to call some of the achievements by players like Prometheus or Gus Superplays. We're not talking everyone.
Maybe "quite a few" is a bit too much, I'm only really thinking of about 3 people or so here. On the other hand, IIRC I've seen Japanese videos referring to things like 2-loop no miss clears of Konami or Toaplan shmups as "super plays", which is quite a bit lower then something like a Mushi Futari counter stop, so I get the feeling this word isn't as stringent as some people here might believe?

Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
lol NAK is homestaying in NZ and quit playing awhile ago. I love how the Japanese-English loanword "superplayer" comes off as some holy deity that descends from Japan every full moon to grace us with their presence. For the record though I do feel like the gap between western and Japanese records is too evident not to ignore, the STG Hall of Records is telling enough.
Anyway, SGDQ: I hope you guys know the Ikaruga presentation was basically just TASbot running a prerecorded TAS video of Ikaruga GC running through the Dolphin emulator with commentary. It's a dumb way of presenting the genre to everyone, if it were a live TAS done on real hardware it might have counted for something, but what are people supposed to take away from a doubleplay TAS demo? Is it going to bring new people to the genre? Is it going to make people submit scores? The answer is no. Moan as much as you like about how the genre is dying and that everyone needs to spread the love, but the bottom line is that shmups do not belong in speedrunning events.

They've actually banned all plushies and cosplay at the events now that they're "professional", which is a shame because I liked the oddities of the older events.juonryu2nd wrote:It kind of amuses me how Touhou fumos are frequently seen during these events, but no one actually runs the Touhou games. Sorry but this conclusion doesn't add up to your argument. Surely someone performing a real score run live is far better than any TAS.Elixir wrote: but the bottom line is that shmups do not belong in speedrunning events.
Hell, even someone doing a 1-ALL shitclear of Ketsui would bring new people to the table.
Re: SGDQ '15 Shmup exhibition possibility
Scoring and 1cc runs have no place in speedrunning events for obvious reasons. Shmups aren't speedgames and they aren't played for speed.Blinge wrote:Sorry but this conclusion doesn't add up to your argument. What mostly speedrunning events allow shmups and why are they allowed? I've heard of some european events having them.
