PCB repair - V-V (Grind Stormer)

Post by maxlords »

I've got a Grind Stormer board that has scrambled graphics. When I originally bought it, it worked fine for a day. The second time I powered it up, the character sprites scrambled. I have many opener
other Toaplan boards, nary an issue. How do I fix the scrambled sprites and what could cause this?

I am using an Egret 29 with a Nanao low/medium monitor.

Thanks in advance!

Check the pins on the surface mount chips.

You mean pull and reseat the ROM chip? That I can do. Will try it a bit later. Thanks!

The quad chips soldered directly to the PCB with very tiny legs - those. Get a long, thin razor blade or any other type of flexible tiny thing, and check every leg by pushing it GENTLY to the side, at the base where it should be soldered down. They're very fragile and if theres a problem only the lightest of pressure will cause the foot to move slightly. If one does, it needs reflowing.

It takes a while and will make your eyes go funny.
