De soldering Gun/Station recommendations?

Hi All,

I'm currently looking to purchase a de soldering gun to do the nesrgb on my Twin Fami and a friends NES. Could anyone reccomend a decent gun for around £100?

I got a Hakko 808 which proved really easy to use even without special training. Used it to take a leaky cap off an Xbox motherboard.

I think its specs are slightly better than the station there, but it's an all-in-one unit and doesn't come with a stand, though you can buy one. Price should be about the same. Replacement parts are really easy to get if you should need them.

I've got the digital version of the 474: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aoyue-474A-ESD- ... 35d65f1196. It gets the job done and is compatible with Hakko 808 spares so you can switch to "real" filters instead of the spongy ones that come with the Aoyue

I too have a Hakko 808 and although I don't use it much it is great. Makes NESRGB installations super easy.

I also have Hakko 808 and never regretted it. They're easy and user friendly but only useful for desoldering through-hole components. For NESRGB mods this more than enough.

Ah, that's what I was thinking about. You need different equipment for surface mount components.

Things like the first soldering station linked have me scratching my head though. They don't function as SMD rework stations, so what's the point of the bulk? That one does offer a nicer temperature control, but it doesn't feature as strong a heating element (70W vs 80W). Maybe it has better thermal capacity. I don't think it heats up faster.

Yup, it's the same and yes, it can use Hakko filters. I can get you the spare numbers when I get home tonight It won't do SMD components though, as Ed Oscuro pointed out. There's combo versions available but they're quite a bit more expensive. Personally I like the smaller gun compared to the 808 and I couldn't justify the steeper price for a Hakko

Seems like a rip off of the Hakko 808. I haven't tried it but for the price I don't think it will disappoint you. I prefer the smaller gun because of the weight. The station does take some space on the desk but storage wise it kinda doesn't matter compared to the case of the 8800. Go with what you think you'll feel comfortable working with

I have a Hakko Fr-300. its an all in one desoldering gun. its actually the replacement for the 808.

It has many new features the 808 doesnt like quick change tips and a temperature wheel on the bottom that doesnt need a screwdriver to change. It also heats up and is ready to use really fast. way faster than my soldering iron. Its also much lighter than the 808.

I bought mine on ebay for $165.

I don't like Hakkos, I use PACE desoldering stations but they are expensive. You get what you pay for...

I use the Hakko Fr-300 that mvsfan mentioned. Retail-wise, it is above your budget. I suppose you could buy one off of ebay as suggested, but you also roll the dice on reputable seller, used (possibly abused) item, etc.
