Kunoichi question

Post by PaCrappa »

What is a Kunoichi? I like the game and it stars a female ninja. Well, I was listening to a song by Peelander-Z called "Ninja High School" http://www.myspace.com/peelanderz and the guy says "my girlfriend is a kunoichi".

Am I right in assuming it means female ninja? If not, please correct me.

As always, thanks in advance.

It means female ninja.

I would think that's what it means...I've heard the word used in reference to female ninjas several times before, though I don't know what the literal Japanese translation would be, or anything like that.

Slightly off to the side, I'm not sure if you were aware or not, but IIRC "Ninja High School" is actually an old manga comic book series, I'm not sure if the song you refer to has anything to do with it or not. And to curb possible further questions, I've never read any of the aforementioned comics, so I can't say much of anything further about 'em, heh heh.

Thanks. One would think that they read the comic as they bill themselves "Japanese Action Comic Punk". I didn't even know the comic existed. I can hardly wait to not read it ;)

I hope you continue to like the game, Pa. I completely LOVE both Shinobi games on the PS2. In fact, Shinobi is probably my favorite action game of this generation. It's a little better than Kunoichi in my opinion, but Kunoichi is a great break from the murderous difficulty of Hotsuma's adventure. Hats off to Sega and Overworks/Sega Wow. To me, this is Sega's best of the best games as a third party along with Panzer Dragoon Orta and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution.

As for what Kunoichi means, it has to mean something along the lines of female ninja. Ninja Warriors Again's female character's name is Kunoichi.

It's weird, I hear so many people say Nightshade (why the name change Sega..) is easier than Shinobi, but I personally think it's harder. Then again, I try to Tate every enemy and if I don't Tate a boss, I repeat the fight.

I think both games are great, Shinobi being one of the best 3D action games this gen. Always glad to see other fans of both of them.

This is interesting: Wikipedia entry for kunoichi.

I was going to add the "ku - no - ichi" etymology until I saw judesalmon's post. That's the explanation Usagi Yojimbo uses.

I think both games are absolutely hard as nails. I like the atmosphere of the first one better (the stages w/ the sakura are tops) but I like the whole jumping thing -- makes crazy ass chaining possible.

The last boss in Shinobi is 10x harder than the one in Kunoichi though.

Thanks for the link judesalmon. That was interesting. Especially the part about Kunoichis in law enforcement.

Both games are dope.
