Extron DVS 304 (Fudoh?)

Post by Das Muel »

I'm looking for the best possible 24 khz upscaling solution for my Sega Model 1/2 arcade boards. I saw a little update on Fudoh's page saying these devices were fit for this purpose, but the full review hasn't been posted yet. Looking at the back of the device, there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to input RGB. Does anybody have any experience with these? Does anybody know of any other top quality 24 Khz upscalers (I already have a GBS8220 but it doesn't quite cut it for me).

Cheers,

Das Muel

The Extrons are ok for that, since they're cheap. You can input RGB through the VGA connector. The 304 isn't any good for 15khz sources and it's merely ok for 31khz ones, so its 24khz compatibility at least makes it quite unique.

Framemeister or XPC-4 are the more obvious choices, but they're more expensive as well.

Depending on the display you want to use you can also convert 24khz 384p to 15khz 480i. This can be done using any of the Extron VSC scan converter units.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I use a CRT Trinitron PC monitor as my main retro gaming display and I already have an XRGB2+ for 15 khz stuff, so I'm not really looking to get a Framemeister. Would a DVS 304/XPC-4 give noticeably better results than the GBS 8220 I'm using now?

Ideally I'd like a cabinet with a real medium res monitor, but that's not really practicable at the moment so I want the best possible quality I can get.

Cheers

sure. XPC-4 should give you pixel perfect doubling (384p to 768p) out of the box. The Extron should be close but will need quite some fine tuning. No idea how the GBS looks with 24khz sources, but I can imagine

Ok cool. I think I'll look into buying an XPC-4. What would be the best way of inputting RGBs? (presumably I'd need to buy a Sync Strike too).

By the way, with a LOT of tweaking to the RGB pots/geometry and picture settings, you can get a half-decent picture from the GBS 8220. If you output at 1024x768 and then add some scanlines, it tightens the image up quite a bit. I managed to get Virtua Fighter 1 looking fairly good, but Virtua Fighter 2 is way too soft for some reason and the colours seem to bleed a little too.

Thanks for your help.

If you can find a cheap 304 ($80 or so) I would maybe try that one first. The XPC is considerably more expensive (even more than a Framemeister).

Unfortunately (or luckily) I don't have any 384p sources, so I don't know if you need anything extra to connect a Model 2 board to a XPC. I could imagine that it's pretty straight forward. On the Extron it certainly is, but you should consider putting variable resistors in the RGB lines, otherwise your image might turn out to be too bright.

The Extrons listed on Ebay at the moment are pretty damn expensive actually. If the XPC-4 performs well with both 15 and 24 khz I might buy one and sell my XRGB2+. The XPC-4 would allow me to try out my stuff on my HDTV too (it only has an HDMI input, and I've really struggled to find a good VGA-HDMI adapter so I can't use my XRGB2+ with it).

Presumably I'd need to keep my Pal Scart to JP21 pin adapter if I wanted to use the XPC-4 with my 240p/RGB Scart consoles?

it's a little more complicated than that. For 15khz RGBs sources you need a Sync stripper/interface. The XPC-4 only got a single input and it's a DVI-I port.

So.....Scart/JP21 - Sync Strike - VGA-DVI-A - XPC-4?

Eureka. Here's a guy doing exactly what I want to do. I think he only speaks Korean though, so he might not respond to my comment. At least now I know it can be done.

One more question, Fudoh - Does the XRGB-Mini definitely support 24 Khz sources? I wasn't aware that it did.

Cheers

I'm pretty sure, yes. There was a PCB list available at some point (on some japanese blog) and I think it listed 24khz boards as well. Maybe it was even discussed here on the board. Shouldn't be too hard to find some confirmation.

The search functionality on this forum is fairly useful. Enter terms such as 24kHz and XRGB and select the Hardware forum and you'll find results like this:
