Got a 3DO for cheap, any recommendations?

Post by ACSeraph »

Was going though one of my usual junk store haunts out here in the Japanese countryside and found a problem free JP version Panasonic 3DO for 1000 yen (about $10).

I'm interested in trying different stuff on it via burned discs, and then picking up legit copies of the good stuff down the line. Not really sure where to start though since this system had zero market presence where I grew up and so I don't know much about it.

Currently playing and enjoying Alone in the Dark, despite how badly it has aged. What else is worth trying?

Also does anyone know if there is a homebrew scene for 3DO, or if there are english patched iso files floating around somewhere for Policenauts and Snatcher?

Not much in the way of homebrew iirc. Gex is fun but has a humorous amount of slowdown for a 2D side-scroller that's not present on the PSX port.

Star Control II. NAO. You will end up wearing the Domino of Unrivaled Merriment once you do. Trust me. Don't forget to enjoy the sauce and play Frungy, either.

EDIT: About Policenauts, the PSX version has been patched to English. It's your best bet.

It has the best port of Starblade and a good port of SSFT for the time. SSFT has a fantastic arranged soundtrack.

I had Total Eclipse and also second on Star Control 2.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Star Fighter 3000, the 3DO version is basically the definitive version (sans the original Acorn/RISC OS version) with textured models and without the absurd fog that severely limits the viewing distance in the DOS/PSX/Saturn version

3DO version of Wing Commander 3 has some scenes not available on the other versions but the rest are the same I think.

Dragons Lair and Space Ace if you like those games.
