DonPachi!
Finally a score I'm happy with... interestingly, this comes after about a week of not playing any donpachi. And just to annoy the purists, this way done using the analog stick of a dual shock :p I just find it easier to use than a dpad, especially for flicking left and right.
ReKleSS - 3,975,780 - 1-4 - Max hit: 48 - Type B
I should stop trying to rely on point-blanking enemies, it's not reliable...

AWJ - 4,133,580 - 1-4 - max hit: 44 - Type B
Fuck fuck fuck. Made it to stage 4 on one life (for the first time that I can remember) and then totally choked. Died four times in rapid succession, with bombs in stock each time. I just haven't "seriously" (i.e. not creditfeeding) played stage 4 and beyond enough.
How can people use Type C in this game? It's ridiculously sluggish - its regular speed is almost as slow as Type B's speed while firing the laser!
I don't suppose anyone has a bee map for stage 3...
I just noticed a significant gameplay difference between the US and Japanese PCBs. In the Japanese version, upon finishing a stage you get a number of bombs added to your stock equal to the stage number (one bomb after finishing stage 1, two bombs after stage 2, etc.) In the US version, your bombs are filled to maximum at the end of every stage. Perhaps the scoreboard should be split, since this difference has a large impact on difficulty in regular play (as opposed to high-level no-bomb play, which does not seem to be reflected by most of the scores here)
Ok, for the sake of completeness: who has used the US version? Please let me know, as i'll eventually split the tables, given the important informations provided by AWJ (thanks!). suspect that most scores come from the Saturn/PSX (thus JP) versions, though.
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.
The USA version does fill up your bombs after every stage. In the Japanese version, you do get at least the number of bombs as the stage you have cleared. So after 2-4, you will get 4 bombs to start off 2-5. Perhaps my memory is off, but on occasion I feel I have more bombs than the stage number with the Japanese romset. I could be wrong however.
The suicide bullets of the second loop are slower in the USA version than the Japanese version. Believe it or not, in some situations this can actually cause more problems for the player as the bullets tend to hang around the screen.
The medium sized enemies also have less hit points in the USA version. Again this may not be as good as it seems. On 2-3 there are some enemies (the square boats) which will drop bombs if they are killed after they perform two series of attacks. In the Japanese version, when you are dodging you can actually bomb and the ship will stay alive, then you can kill it and get your bomb back. In the USA version, when you bomb the ship will die too quickly and you won't get the extra bomb.
There is also a Korean version of the game which is exactly the same as the Japanese version except for the final attack of the 1-1/2-1 boss. The central laser is removed making that boss a bit easier.
I have not played the PS/Saturn versions of donpachi, but the PCB is easier than the curent mame version. For some reason the later mame versions don't have as much slowdown as the pcb. The older mame versions play slower than the current versions, so they may be more accurate.

Thanks landshark. Now I am trying to finish the Korean version with the B ship. I really don't like playing with the B ship. The hitbox is slightly higher than the A or C ship, so many tactics and hiding areas don't work. I have already gotten to the end of 2-5, so maybe in a few months I will finish the game.....
