CRT Whine? (Video)

Post by LNZ »

Starting another thread.

Is anyone else here able to hear high pitched whine on thia youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A1BJAmMNQE
The whine should be around 15khz is my guess. Watch in 720p to hear it

I know my old beovisions sounded exactly the same, and i can not stand it. Totally kill my ears. Not every CRT video i watch has this whine though (maybe thats due to microphones used etc) But im worried that every sony BvM/PVM whines like this. Anyone knows?
thanks!

I tried 480p, 720p, 1080p, and it sounds like regular audible white noise. I don't know what's causing it, but it's not what the 15KHz tone. As mentioned recently, some monitors have 15KHz whine bad, but others don't. I wouldn't worry about it so much, but you are planning on testing everything in person before accepting it, so you will discover this for yourself.

Thanks for your reply!
Im hearing the white noise also. But that doesnt bother me at all. What bothers me is that SUPER sharp high pitched sine wave, my ears hurt listing to it after just a couple of seconds. I tested two Beovision MX4002 and they both had the same razor sharp whine..

It's possible that the YT player (on Firefox) wasn't reloading the video properly after selecting / manually rewinding, but I just didn't hear it. My setup (and my ears) are definitely able to pick up a 15KHz tone.

But like I said, this isn't something to worry about ahead of time. Personally, none of my tubes have noticeable whine, and that includes a diverse collection of Macs, VGA monitors, Sony TVs, and three PVMs. Meanwhile, just sitting here with tight headphones on, the sound of blood rushing through my head + slight PC fan noise is audible, and if I get close to a LCD monitor, there's sometimes some annoying noise from that too. Hasn't stopped me from using things and living for a long while.

White noise aside, this isn't a good video to judge. If we're listening to the monitor hum/electric noise, why would you also have the video game sounds turned up?

Also it sounds like someone is stomping around and making breakfast the entire time. :)

Of the 4 BVMs I had, two had a high-pitched noise. One just after startup and it disappeared once the monitor has run for about 15 minutes. On the other it wasn't this bad, but it also didn't go away. This one I gave away and to my knowledge the new owner sprayed all coils with some kind of varnish and got rid of the sound eventually.

I didn't get the impression this is the OP's video. Is this wrong?

No. This is not my video

Wonderful to hear that there are monitors without this noise. My fear was that every CRT had this horrible whine. I guess that adds to the list of things to look out for when getting a new monitor. Atleast untill your turn 50 or something and your hearing in that range vanishes..

There is loud white noise in this video but I can also hear the whine you're referring to as well. My BVM-14G1U has a whine like this. I notice it when I turn it on, but as soon as I start playing a game I forget all about it, and when I stop playing I guess I'm so used to it I don't notice it anymore. However, if I leave my office and forget to turn the monitor off, when I re-enter, I don't really hear it as much as I can "sense" that the monitor is still turned on. Maybe the sound declines to just-barely-audible levels for me (like Fudoh mentioned).

What is it that causes this whine? It seem to be random which monitors has it.
I really cant stand it. It really sticks in my ears and after i turn the source of, like that video i posted, i still have the whine in my ears for hours..

I'll repost this:

Should explain everything in good detail.

My 20M2E also has this very loud whine, which is probably the main reason why I never use it. I think if this is something important to you, you might want to stick to 14" PVMs as it's typically much more tolerable there in my experience. I've also had even better luck with consumer sets of that size, which might be attributed to the lower power draw compared to professional monitors which have a lot more circuitry inside.

This is completely normal. 15khz noise comes from the Flyback Transformer IIRC.

With sufficient use of the TV you should get used to it.

Even modern TVs have some kind of noise or hum, though generally a lot softer. (Plasma though..)

I remember a few years ago after moving back to Oregon, I had my 27" just sitting in one corner of the house without being set up or connected for about a year or so. When I finally got off my ass to get it all set back up, the 15khz whine caught me off guard haha, at first I thought I was going crazy. But then I remembered what and why it does it.

Growing up though I remember hearing it but never even really caring about it. Didn't bother me. Guess that's normal growing up with CRTs

The older you get the less you may be able to hear the 15k whine (especially over 40). So there is a perk of being an aging gamer :)
